Perth have signed Scott Sorensen from the Panthers on a two year deal

Sorensen is a mid-range plodder who benefits from the Panthers being pampered. He'd be worth $500k tops at a non-darling team. But you know the Bears will have had to pay him elite money to lure him away.

I think Sorensen is useful in the role that Penrith need him for.

They can use him as a workhorse middle or on the edge.

But we know when it comes to middles Penrith dont necessarily rely on them to be the meter eaters, so Sorensen is really a lock when he's in the middle.

He'll be useful, but if they're expecting him to lead their pack they're in trouble.

Great pick up. Talakai supposed to be next
Talakai is a great pick up.

He's one that I would love broncos to get.

At worst he's the perfect 17 jersey. He's a legit starter at centre or edge.... if coming off the bench you can bring him on as an impact middle whenever you dont have an injury.

Not often you can find a guy that can play 80mins in the backs and forwards, but also be an impact 30-40mins bench player through the middle.

He covers injuries from 1-5 (assuming centres and wingers can shift) + 8/10-13

The bookies reportedly have no faith in the Bears doing anything in their first season. in fact they are the early favourites for the wooden spoon

disclaimer: Betr’s executive chairman is Matt Tripp, who also part owns the Melbourne Storm.

The reports say:

Betr quietly released a market recently for most losses in the 2027 season and the Bears are $1.10. The Dragons are the second favourite at $15.

Betr went a step further and framed a market on who would finish higher between the NRL newbies when the PNG Chiefs enter the competition in 2028.

Despite only having two players signed to their roster, the Chiefs were $1.15 to finish above the Bears ($5) in the 2028 regular season.

Betr’s chief trading officer Tristan Merlehan said.

“There is a gulf between the two new teams entering the competition and they have been priced accordingly,”

“Perth is currently $1.10 to win the spoon in 2027 and we struggle to see them winning a game, let alone win more games than another team.

“PNG are a genuine premiership shot in 2028 currently priced at $15 with the likelihood of plenty of Penrith players joining their former teammate (Jarome Luai).”

Mal Meninga said:

“In reality, there no marquees available. You can’t just click your fingers – they are all taken. How do you do that? Initially, we have to build our own marquees. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow wasn’t a marquee when the Dolphins got him. They turned him into one,” Meninga said.

“It’s tough, it’s challenging but I believe we are heading down the right path. Why do you have to be vocal about it? Behind the scenes, we have a very small team, hardly any staff, trying to make this all work.
“Everyone has all this great advice for us but they don’t understand what we’re trying to operate under. We got no start-up money. Basically, the money that we got has been provided by the West Australian Government.

“It’s not a matter of buying a marquee and everyone else will follow. We talked to Tino (Fa’asuamaleaui) but he decided to stay at the Titans.

“The Dolphins, they were pretty smart. They went out and bought senior players to set standards and expectations and that’s what we’re doing. We are building a whole ecosystem. Unlike the Dolphins, we don’t have any junior systems already set up.

“We just haven’t got that (PNG’s tax-free money) but we can only control what we can control. We’re under the same conditions as every other club.

“It would be great to have extra support but we’re not in that situation – we are owned the ARL Commission.”

“I’m trying to explain to everyone that if we’re going to get a marquee player, hopefully there’s going to be some sort of third-party arrangement. Hopefully. That’s what the board members are trying to do at the moment,”

“The kids we are signing, they can be marquees in the future. Young Luke Laulilii could be an outstanding prospect. We’ve signed Apa Twidle, a really exciting kid. Tyran Wishart. Liam Henry. Josh Curren, Scotty Sorensen, Sifa (Talakai). They are telling me that they all want to be leaders.

“There are a lot of players in the game worth $1.3m a year, $1.4m, who are all signed up. There’s not many around at the moment. I’m working on players who are going to marquee players in the future.

“There’s no juniors at the moment that are come through and flowing like the Dolphins so we have to create a fluid ecosystem where we are working hard in the market for a 16, 17-year-old kid, and getting him into our system for a three to five year period.

“We have a three-to-five year plan and the Government is supporting us for seven years. That’s the time frame we are looking at to create some sustainability in the business.”

Ah man, they’re so boned.

NRL should give them special exemptions for ESL and rugby players.

Brings more talent to the NRL and gives the bears an advantage that the other teams won’t shook about because it’s not taking their players.

Pretty sure a lot of ESL players have NRL get our clauses.

Mal using the excuse that they are not getting any financial help, but I thought that part of the bids' business case was to prove to the NRL that they could be self-sufficient and competitive from day one?

I understand that the PNG bid is an absolute joke and sets an extremely unfair playing field, but the Bears can't go spruiking themselves to the NRL on why they should be selected to be the 18th team and then whinge about being under-resourced when they are successful in their bid.
