Perth Bears

I don’t even wanna play in Perth. Every time I think of Perth rugby league I remember jyy.

What type of bear are we even talking? Brown? Black? Polar? Drop? Do they have a logo yet?

Mal using the excuse that they are not getting any financial help, but I thought that part of the bids' business case was to prove to the NRL that they could be self-sufficient and competitive from day one?

I understand that the PNG bid is an absolute joke and sets an extremely unfair playing field, but the Bears can't go spruiking themselves to the NRL on why they should be selected to be the 18th team and then whinge about being under-resourced when they are successful in their bid.

The issue isn't that, the issue is they are trying to attract players basically at the same time as another club with infinitely more (legal) money to play with. This isn't the same as when Redcliffe came in. They also aren't pumping out juniors already like Redcliffe were and PNG are.

If PNG can get these massive leg ups, Perth should have been given something.

The biggest worry for me is I heard png are Brisbane broncos fanatics. A marquee signing for them is anyone from our team.

Perhaps they can sign proud Australian centre Gehemat Shibasaki? Ezra Mam has PNG heritage on his father's side too I believe, he'd be a marquee signing. Good deals all round?

I understand that, and I understand that it's not an even playing field in a salary-cap sense. But part of everyone's bids to become the 18th team was to be financially viable and either have existing player pathways or be able to put them in place (in this case to draw on the North Sydney area, hence the Bears, as well as the current Perth region). So to claim that they are hamstrung because they are not getting any financial assistance, and don't have development pathways, is in direct contrast to what they had to prove to the NRL in order to be the successful bid.

“It’s tough, it’s challenging but I believe we are heading down the right path. Why do you have to be vocal about it? Behind the scenes, we have a very small team, hardly any staff, trying to make this all work.
“Everyone has all this great advice for us but they don’t understand what we’re trying to operate under. We got no start-up money. Basically, the money that we got has been provided by the West Australian Government.

“There’s no juniors at the moment that are come through and flowing like the Dolphins so we have to create a fluid ecosystem where we are working hard in the market for a 16, 17-year-old kid, and getting him into our system for a three to five year period.

So did they just bullshit their whole pitch to the NRL?

They need to set this all up, Perth is obviously not league heartland like Qld and PNG are. Funnily enough, Perth has provided about as many juniors to the NRL as Melbourne has but even with the North Sydney connection, it isn't like North Sydney to Perth is the same as staying in the same building as going from Redcliffe to The.

The onus should be on the NRL to make it work. If you compare it to Tassie coming in for the AFL - this is an AFL state already and they have juniors already playing in the AFL. Even so, the AFL has given them significant draft concessions and financial incentives to sign established talent above the existing salary cap.

Its crazy to provide PNG such a leg up but absolutely nothing to Perth. Perth is a long game, set them for success up front.

I’d guess by juniors he means local juniors,I’m not sure of the state of the junior competition in Perth

PNG is a corrupt shithole.

then it's no surprise why Vlandys wanted a team there so bad
Yeah the corruption in png doesn’t compare to ours. If vlandys actually went there without protection……..anyway.

with Perth starting to get a few deals over the line, I thought a thread might be good to keep track of their squad and see how they're shaping up for their debut season.

confirmed signings:
1. Toby Sexton
2. Harry Newman
3. Luke Smith
4. Emarly Bitungane
5. Iszac Fa'asuamaleaui
6. Liam Henry
7. Josh Curran
8. Sean Russell
9. Nick Meaney
10. Tyran Wishart
11. James McDonnell

Johnathan Sua signed with them I believe

If the rules and stuff stay the same for 27, it doesn't take too much for a team to be competitive on the back of momentum. Sure, they'll still lose plenty I'm sure with a lack of quality, but with a clean tip sheet, if the NRL wants to ensure they are competitive, they could easily do it with set restarts and nobody could prove shit.

Billy's not going anywhere... Unless we don't offer him anything.

But I have no doubt we'll offer him a new contract... And so we should
