What's in it for NRMA as a major sponsor of the Broncos? I am a season member but I don't use NRMA.

Brand recognition. NRMA first came on board with the Broncos (at a lower level) when they first expanded their operations out of just NSW into Qld - they now have a lot of customers in Qld. I actually first signed up with NRMA insurance when I moved to Sydney a few years back because RACQ doesn't operate there so I had to change companies. The deciding factor for me was price, but if they had not been a sponsor of the Broncos I wouldn't even have heard of them and got a quote in the first place.

To add to your post Flutterby.
Brand Recognition as well, broncos have common free to air games and huge crowds at the home game, anyone who's a broncos support knows NRMA, this means for example all those people who are thinking if a insurance company, first thing to pop to there head is NRMA, if you know what i mean, OR if same price and everythign same some owuld go to NRMA because they support the broncos.

ALSO brand recognition.
Because broncos are so successful and competitive, NRMA, is looked at in that light. That's why it's harder for losing teams to attract sponsors, as it's not the image a sponsor wants, a sponsor wants a strong image to support.

Exactly, brand recognition. What benefit does Lihir Gold get from people knowing they mine gold? I doubt many PNG fans will rush out and buy an ounce.

The only possible benefit would be a PR exercise, since mining companies do get a bad wrap for environmental spoiling etc. But I reckon their interest would be short term.

Sponsorship is a marketing tool at best, a CEO justifying his love for a particular sporting team at worst. It's all about business and promoting your brand (and maybe some sly deductions at tax time)

I did say it was about promoting your brand - my point was more around my belief that companies or organisations that sponsor sporting teams get very little short term financial benefit from it hence my belief that a mining company would be more than interested in sponsoring a PNG NRL team. I think sponsorship that results in instant profit to the sponsoring company is a myth - it is either about brand recognition which may lead to further sales in the future or community support.

the png government should do a lot more with that 20 mil then enter nrl teams.

I think QLD Cup is more of a realistic option and play their home games in say Darwin and the odd game in PNG. Start small, dream big. Either that or make a combined PNG and Pacific Island team.

Seriously it's pie in the sky stuff. Stick with the Pacific Cup for now.
