For me, he was always a player I took for granted. I never considered replacing him with anyone else, but he wasn't the star attraction, and I didn't feel like he was being overlooked at a rep level. He was always plenty good enough, but more like someone you never had to worry about.

I didn't really see him as anything more than handy until after Alfie left, and maybe not even right away then either. I'm pretty sure I became a fan around the time he became captain, but I can't quite recall.

Anyway, I guess what I'm asking is along the lines of I think the legend of Kevvie grew after his retirement when people twigged to how many premierships he'd won. During his playing years, I think others - especially Bennett - got more of the credit. He was the ultimate quiet achiever.

Or did I miss something?

i liked Kerrod. Mainly because I scored this bad boy back when trading cards were a thing. It was worth 20$ back in the day.

also had the mark coyne one. And next year I got mal Meninga which was worth $40, I sold that one but still have the Walters and coyne one.
 
if you ever needed a reason why resting star players in the final regular season round isn't a bad thing, you just need to look at the Kris tackle on Nikora

Alf / Kerrod / Kevvie combo greater than the sum of the parts .
The Ipswich connection was great to watch especially late in games when the big fellas used to get tired .

I've been thinking about this, and I'm ruling Kevvie, Bellamy and Webster out of Coach of the Year based on them "resting" players for the final round. Regardless whether it was the right tactic in the pitch for the title (and I believe it was), it's shitty Rugby League, outside the spirit of the game, and an up-you to fans who paid to see the stars. This especially applies to Kevvie whose tactic openly devalued the JJ Giltanan Shield. If we fail to win the premiership, we could always have that gong. It's not nothing. If we go on to lose against the Storm next round it's an even bigger fail for the club. I would say it wasn't worth it.

Instead, I'm giving it to Ivan Cleary, who opted not to "rest" players, including his son, and instead put his team in a position to retain the minor premiership in the event the Broncos lost to the Storm. It was a gamble that had no other pay-off other than a chance to win the minor premiership and for Panthers' fans to see a proper game. He did not need the extra two points. It was a gamble that paid off. Credit where it's due. This is the game we would prefer to play.

Sorry Kevvie, as much as you deserved to win COTY up until this game, you blew it. Let's just hope it pays off this weekend.

Coach of the year should be about your ability to get the best out of your team to hopefully win the premiership. Resting or not resting players, is totally irrelevant to the award.

Sounds like you're voting for Cleary then. Of course, there's a little hitch there: it's decided before the premiership.

What is coach of the year based on though? I mean, love him or hate him, Cleary should have absolutely gotten it last year...the Panthers won the minor prem last year with 2-3 rounds to go from memory, but it was given to Todd instead.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, what happened at the Cows last year was impressive considering everyones expectations but I don't necessarily think it was coach of the year worthy.

Good question. Everyone's just making it up. If it's making a pie out of a mound of mud, Bennett probably deserves the accolade. If it's let's be nice to NZ because we feel a bit sorry for them, then Webster gets it. If it's bringing back the good old boys, Kevvie gets it. If it's about putting together the most consistent team, and not shirking the last ten yards in case someone gets hurt, then Cleary all the way.
 
I assume coach of the year takes into account multiple factors - season record, player development (how many of their players significantly improved/made rep), pre-season expectations (did they under/overachieve), that sort of thing.

On that basis I don't really see how you can't give it to Todd last year. How many saw the cows finishing 3rd and making the prelims, as opposed to Penrith winning MP and premiership after winning the year prior and making the grand final the year prior to that? Expectations alone they're not in the same post code.

As for this year - Warriors. Again, who saw them making top 4? DWZ has been totally reborn. SJ looks like he's worked out how to play HB. They don't have many star players but they play well as a team - seems like coach of the year material if you ask me.

If not them, then us.

If we forfeit this match, Reyno and Patty get another week to recover from niggling injuries, and then we only have to beat a lower placed side (probably the Sharks) rather than the Storm. A much easier route to the 3rd final. Same outcome, easier path.

Now this would be a serious COTY master move.

NZ have had a great draw, they haven't played a top 8 side since the 3rd week in July and it was at home.

They've exceeded expectations, no doubt about it. They've also had a very favourable draw and I am suggesting they'll get found out in the next 2 weeks.
