POST GAME Post Game Discussion - Round 1 - South Sydney

Mccullogh held the endurance records until piped by Parcell this year. Yep,Sounds lazy to me.

Not hard to be the least laziest at the Broncos. Parcel bet that record twice in a few hours, true story.

If Thaiday was as bad as Bennett is making out last week why did he let him play 66 minutes?

Cause apparently you drop your best players to reserve grade to make them play even better, and give your worst players all the minutes lol.

pretty sure bennett was asked in the presser why thaiday played the first 40 and he said because he gave away 3 penalties, he didn't need a break because he took them via giving away the penalties.

Well that's about the worst justification ever.

"I left him out there for the 80 minutes because since he dropped the ball on all 20 of his hitups before a defender even touched him he wasn't very tired".

As bad as Bennett is making out or as bad as everyone saw him play? He quite obviously gave away penalties that he shouldn't have and that is what Bennett said? I know I cop a bit for backing up Bennett a fair bit but when you guys say this ridiculous stuff it's so hard not to respond with why you're wrong.

Yeah ok. He gave away a few penalties which is when you get dragged I would have thought.

And he probably should have been taken off earlier. But Bennett isn't making him out to be any worse than what he actually was. He didn't say he gave away 20 penalties and dropped the ball 17 times. He said he should know better than to give away silly penalties.

Also Wayne quite obviously understands that it isn't a 13 a-side sport. 17 players need to step up for whole 80 minutes and it looks like that is part of the reason Thaiday is on the bench this week.

Sam To Play 'Guiding Hand' From Bench - Broncos

I am new to this site and have spent the last few days catching-up on the opinions of other bloggers. Now its my turn. Firstly, the major deficiencies at the Broncos over the last few years was on display again against Souths. These included weak centre field defence, lack of speed and penetration around the ruck, no cohesive go-forward and too few players doing all the work. I believe this is a hangover of the Griffin days where bewildering team selections and even stranger recruitment and retention policies, playing favourites with undeserving players, and under-utilising others, meant we finished 8th, 12th and 8th over the last three years.

I am aware that it is only the second week of 2015 season, and I hope things will improve this Friday night but, regardless of the result then, I truly believe that we have to face the fact that we probably have one of the weakest front row(s) in the league; positions which are critical in every game but especially against the best sides e.g. in 2013+2014 v Melb, Mnly, Easts, Cant + Souths 14 games for 2 wins(?).

With no forward domination, the backs have no chance to shine and so discussions about the ability of players like Milford, Kahu, Oates etc are redundant until the weakness is rectified (see how Peter Wallace has rediscovered his ability behind a good pack).

Finally, Gordon Tallis wrote this about the Broncos in 2013...

Gorden Tallis rips into the Brisbane Broncos, saying players no longer dream about playing for the club

Unfortunately not much has changed since 2013 in my opinion

But that is how the Broncos played from 2001-2008 for the most part, and also how Newcastle played for the last 3 years. In fact if you switch the 8th/12th/8th around to 12th/8th/12th you basically have Newcastles 2012-2014 in a nutshell lol.

I got bored and worked out each team from round 1's total run amount, their total metres gained, and their average metres gained per run, based from NRL Live Stats.

Brisbane 949m/115 runs= 8.25m per run
Souths 1394m/162 runs= 8.6m per run
Parramatta 1163m/133 runs= 8.74m per run
Manly 987m/141 runs= 7m per run
Newcastle 1523m/169 runs= 9.01m per run
NZ 1513m/180 runs= 8.41m per run
Gold Coast 1258m/152 runs= 8.28m per run
Wests 1277m/154 runs= 8.29m per run
NQ 1386m/164 runs= 8.45m per run
Sydney 1296m/140 runs= 9.26m per run
Penrith 1317m/154 runs= 8.55m per run
Canterbury 1391m/180 runs= 7.73m per run
Cronulla 1362m/152 runs= 8.96m per run
Canberra 1220m/147 runs= 8.29m per run
St. George 1481m/181 runs= 8.18m per run
Melbourne 1333m/145 runs= 9.19m per run

This is telling of a few things. First, Broncos made fourth least metres per run of any team, and the least of any team in total. Secondly, we made the least amount of runs by 18. That is a huge amount, and just goes to show how little ball we had.

Canterbury's much vaunted forward pack made very little impact, where a team like Melbourne, with whom has a relatively weak forward pack in my opinion, made a lot of ground. Both St. George and Manly, who's forward packs are known to be weak, lived up to their name by making very little ground.

Anyway, I just felt like sharing that because I was bored.

If i'm a coach and a player keeps giving away penalties then that player gets hooked immediately ... you don't want a player out there who is going to keep piggy backing the opposition up the field, especially if it is a team like Souths

My reasoning (once again, if I am going to look at a potential tactic for it) is that Thaiday was being punished. "Stay out there you fat bastard, if you keep giving away penalties for a breather, I'll keep working you like a dog until some of that tub melts off". But in the nicest possible way...

Really well thought out post Tony, welcome.

I agree with a lot of your assessment but don't you think apart of the reason why the Broncos performed the way they did is because they had a brand new coach and had to adapt accordingly?

Combined with a couple of bad habits from the past and the brilliance of South Sydney, I believe that's why we saw the scoreline that we did.

RE: Wallace, at the risk of turning this into another Wallace criticism thread, I think he's their weakest link and is still guilty of committing mistakes he made here.

Again, that makes no sense.

You dont want someone out there who is doing more harm than good.

Nice one smart guy! Australia is the best in the world at league just like America would be the best at NFL. Im well aware it gets played in lots of countries. Everyone just sounds like a tool when they say "best team/player in the world" just say best in the NRL. the rest is common knowledge.
