DAVID Mead has moved on from his Gold Coast Titans exit and has all but secured a starting spot at the Broncos for Round 1 of the NRL season.
Mead was one of Brisbane’s best in Saturday’s trial win against reigning premiers Cronulla at Redcliffe.
He pulled off a crunching tackle on Sharks rookie Haydn Peacock and was faultless on the wing.
Mead is favoured to be James Roberts’ right-side partner for Brisbane’s opening round clash against Cronulla on March 2.
Mead never saw himself leaving the Titans, having debuted for the club in 2009 and holding its try-scoring record (67).
After spending eight years at the Gold Coast, where he played 147 NRL games, Mead was initially disappointed at the club’s reluctance to offer him a contract extension last year.
But that disappointment quickly turned to acceptance and he could not be happier with how his move to Red Hill has eventuated.
“There’s no resentment (towards the Titans) at all,” Mead said.
“The club wanted to wait until the end of the season to make a decision about whether I would stay or not. At first I was disappointed with that but I got over it pretty quick.
“I knew I signed with a good club and I was looking forward to that.
“It’s all behind me now. I’ve still got a lot of mates there and I wish all those guys the very best.
“Getting outside my comfort zone was probably the best thing I could do.
“The first couple of weeks I was pretty nervous.
“It’s a completely new team for me. It was a completely new environment.
“I didn’t know how the Broncos operated at all. Not knowing made me a bit nervous about what the expectations were.”
Mead, 28, suffered a minor knee injury last month but showed little signs of discomfort in his first appearance for the Broncos.
He will represent Papua New Guinea in the World All Stars and is hoping to make the trip to England for the World Club Series, where coach Wayne Bennett is expected to field close to his best team for the final pre-season game.
Lachlan Maranta’s defection to the Reds opened up a berth for Mead, who is competing for a wing spot with Jonus Pearson.
He has trained predominantly on the wing and impressed Broncos coaching staff with his transition to a new club.
“I want to give myself every chance (to be there in round one),” Mead said.
“That’s what the trials are about. Making sure you do the job as best as you can and hopefully get picked for Round 1.”
