PLAYER Reece Walsh

Don't worry just have to wait for the Annesley briefing you clarify... oh wait ...

I guess we'll just wait for NRL360 and other media to raise it instead... so yeah swept under the rug, #PenaltyBroncos and all that

Its crazy to think that had common sense prevailed with that decision and the ridiculous Cobbo overturn, we are either even or in front despite playing absolute trash football and Canberra playing out of their skin. It really showed me that we are in this season up to our eyeballs. Despite being absolutely terrible, couldn't complete a set to save ourselves, we were still coming home with a wet sail.

We won't play that badly again and if we can bring the intensity we bought in the last 30 from the start, we aren't getting beaten much this year. We just need to not let the floor fall out when playing badly like we did this round.

was it Stacey Jones as an interim or something?

Yes , and he benched Walsh .
Said he needed to pay more attention to defence . It wasn`t all about attack .

Jones has instead chosen Chanel Harris-Tavita to play at fullback, with the 46-year-old clearly unimpressed with Walsh's recent displays.
We're looking for a more consistent performance at the back," Jones said, while eluding to the team requiring more solidity in their defence to climb back up the ladder.

“I thought I needed to make a change in that position and Chanel proved the week before…it’s basically around defence where he works hard and gets the numbers right.”

While criticising Walsh's input in defence, Jones highlighted how his enthusiasm to always get involved in attack also negatively impacted on the team at times.

“One thing he does do is he goes 100 miles per hour and sometimes that can become a bit of a downfall for the team,” the coach said.

“For Reece, it’s a bit of a learning thing for him…he can learn from it.”

Still making the same mistakes as 3 years ago ...

Confidence player who is going through a rough patch and instead of going into his shell, he compensates by trying too hard, which makes things worse.

He will be ok, but he definitely needs to think run first instead of always looking to play-make, and needs to get involved earlier than 4th tackle wide spreads. It's become so predictable and when the defence rushes up to get in his face he doesn't have the composure (yet) to pull the trigger on the right option, or to execute it in the split second of time he has. Defences have adjusted to his style of play, and now he needs to adjust too.

With his speed, he just needs to get himself around the ball. Focus on support play up the middle, sniffing for those new Haas offloads and playing into space off the back off our halves, rather than trying to do everything himself.

He's a livewire who can punish any team in broken play and can capitalise on momentum and a fast PTB like nobody else... What he's not is a half who can take on a set defensive line and create opportunities for those around him - yet he continues to want to play as the latter

The attacking style of the team needs to adjust as well and give some more options.
Having someone like Cobbo come from the right to the left on a sweep play and sitting in behind Reece will take a lot of pressure off him.
Madge in 14 at Souths had his centres working both sides of the field.

How many times have we seen him try to pull up and slip in recent games. I think he has absolutely been affected by the Origin tackle.

Maybe its the lack of attacking space which is causing him to try to pull up to find space elsewhere and hence slipping - it might be symptomatic of him trying too hard to find opportunities through an established line, rather than playing through the line off the PTB / attacking in broken field situations?

I'm actually not sure, but I do find it hard to believe that a single head knock could have ill effects nearly 12 months later despite all the 'big bad wolf' scare-mongering 'science' around concussions.

It could be any of those things.
Personally I think his confidence has been dented.

I'm not huge on basketball but I remember watching Kobe Bryant play - he has the same sort of usually unshakeable confidence, self-belief and hero mentality that Walsh has, and when he was out of form and not shooting the ball well, when other players would take less shots and tone their game down while they tried to recapture form and 'get hot' again, Kobe would do the opposite and just force the issue and shoot even more trying to pull himself out of it.

Resulted in some pretty awful games and terrible FG %, but eventually he'd come good. Walsh is one of those players I think where he digs himself out of slump by just doing more of the same and digging the hole deeper until he breaks through. There's gonna be some rocks, but I'm confident he will get back to diamonds soon enough.

Kid isn't scared of anything and isn't gun-shy at all.

Slipping over is what got him smacked in the head twice .
You might think he would be looking to avoid it ?

Fullbacks need to be organising. I doubt Reece isnt vocal, but i dont think he has a clue how to organise the blokes in front of him. I was never in favour of giving a bloke with half a skill set to his game a huge contract, and i'm still not happy with it. Another instance of us giving a player a contract he isnt worth because we are so afraid to lose them.

All i am hoping is this is a bit of a wake up call and he can become the player we need him to be. I think too many people have been carried away with his attacking brilliance and its papered over his defence because he's just top level as an attacker.

We dont want to go in and crucify him because he's got the talent, but he's almost 23 with over 80 games of first grade and Origin under his belt, he's not an inexperienced player. He needs to start delivering on the less flashy parts of his game.
Yeah I have been lenient on him because of how highly Slater rates him. Makes me think he must really be impressive off the field because you’d think Slater would hate a flashy player who doesn’t do the small stuff and struggles defensively.

Doesn’t add up

Maybe Billy can get through to him and he listens, but away from Billy he doesnt seem to grasp what he needs to do. I do reckon he's a hard worker, but maybe he isnt working hard on what he isnt good at.

He still seems unfit. Struggled in the heat

I’ve lived it. It absolutely can affect people long term.

No big bad wolf here. I just tell it like it is.

He was awesome under Billy in 2023, but the Suaalii shot has definitely rattled him... most likely because it came so soon after the Taylan May shot.

Walsh was absolute garbage in origin last year, whereas in 2023 he was taking contested bombs and throwing no look cutout balls to beat the jamming defence.

Had he played game 3 in 2023 he would've gone very close to player of the series
