THE Roosters forward Anthony Cherrington is undertaking anger management classes after admitting to a domestic violence assault, including an approach with a knife, on his girlfriend.

In the latest assault drama to envelop the National Rugby League, Cherrington will be sentenced by the courts later this month. The Roosters are awaiting the judicial decision before imposing their own penalty. The NRL is also monitoring the case.

Elsewhere the former Canberra star Todd Carney has been banned from entering the Goulburn local government area for 12 months and handed a suspended 12-month jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to two malicious damage charges in Goulburn Local Court yesterday.

Cherrington, 20, has pleaded guilty to the assault in which he struck Monique Mears repeatedly in the face and on her body, before approaching her with a knife, last year. Ten days later as the couple argued, he smashed her sunglasses, mobile phone and both car mirrors.

According to court documents, last November Ms Mears was preparing to leave him and was packing her belongings in the Rosebery home they had shared for the four-month relationship, when he returned home.

He asked her to stay, and blocked the door. As she ran past him, he grabbed her wrist and hit her in the lower back, left face, head and right ear with an open hand.

"It takes a strong guy to hit a woman," she told him, upon which he kicked her leg. The attack left her bruised with a swollen right ear and left side of her face.

As she tried to leave, he came back carrying a knife with a 15-centimetre blade. She tried to barricade the door with the bed, but he pushed it open.
His flatmate, nicknamed "Sh!tty", tried to calm him.

"Do you want me to kill myself?" Cherrington asked Ms Mears and turned the knife against his stomach. She walked towards him, pleading, "No, don't" and grabbed the knife.

He threatened to "knock you out" if she left the house, but she left soon after.

In early December Ms Mears was driving Cherrington to a meeting, when an argument started and she reaffirmed she wanted to break off the relationship. He called her "slut" and "whore", then smashed her sunglasses, snapped her mobile phone in two, threw a pair of new shoes out of the car, emptied her handbag onto the road and kicked the side mirrors of her father's car.

Cherrington later paid Ms Mears $3000 for damage to her property.
He is obtaining a psychological report to be presented at sentencing on his 21st birthday later this month.

The Roosters' chief executive, Steve Noyce, said police had told the club they had been impressed with Cherrington's remorse, his guilty plea given at the first opportunity and his commitment to counselling and anger management.

Mr Noyce said Cherrington was "very, very sorry" and noted that the player had done everything asked of him in relation to dealing with his personal issues.

Another Rooster, Setaimata Sa, is due back in court next month after appealing against his conviction and sentence of 250 hours' community service for fracturing a man's skull in a pub brawl more than 12 months ago.

roosters should be find 100k and 5 game suspension for him too tbh, make it 10.

Fark me. It really shits me seeing these guys do this sort of shit. Call me a wowser or a fuddy duddy, but it's impacting my appreciation for the game to be honest. If these imbeciles can't stay off the piss or control themselves from hurting women why should I pay money to watch them?

Fucking idiots.

This is society, though, not just NRL players. Young blokes with anger management issues. Was he even on the piss? I doubt it.

Agree I am so totally over all this crap. However to Cherington's credit at least he owned up to it and is taking steps to address his behaviour not just going "oh I was so drunk, oh it's not my fault, oh blah blah blah"

Court Ordered. That's hardly him wanting to do something about it.

Another feather in the NRL's cap, and a brilliant way to ring in the 2009 season!!!

I agree, its certainly taking the gloss of the start of the season for me.

But is the game more rife with this stuff than it used to be? Or are we just hearing about it more?

Go to the head of the BHQ class!

To be honest I think it's a bit of both. The media certainly never used to report as much on what players got up to off the field and also every other person didn't have a camera phone etc on which to film any incidents. However I also think a lot more and definitely worse things are happening in these days of full-time professionalism and players getting to NRL at a much younger age.

Again Flutterby is quite correct. I remember reading about one former player talking about all these incidents and saying if he was out with his teammates and behaving inappropriately towards a woman that one of the other blokes would knock him one.

These days it seems to be if you're behaving inappropriately towards a woman then your teammates will egg you on!

Different culture towards women, that's for sure.

Attitude to alcohol is no different. But there seems to be less self or teammate control on the behaviour when on the turps.

Also in the past - players had "real jobs" to go to as well - they couldn't afford to be out and about drunk out of their minds until all hours. Plus they tended to live in the area where they played and were really just like anyone else around the suburb - they were a real part of their communities and not the 'protected species' they seem to be today and if they stuffed up their neighbors, the guy at who ran the corner store, their milkman - everyone would have let them know how unacceptable it was and they would have been ostracised from their community to a certain extent. And they saw playing footy as an honour.

Curious...do they have this problem in the US & UK with their ridiculously high paid Footballers & NFL & NBA & MBL players?

Yep. And they are under even closer scrutiny than here. Think D. Beckham. He blows his nose in the direction of someone other than Stick Spice and he's having an affair with her...

Not only do they have it...they have it ten fold. Cocaine would get more use in European football than Isotonic beverages.

No I didn't, I only use those dots when I'm posting tounge in cheek or baiting.
