POST GAME [Round 1, 2025] Broncos vs Roosters

If anyone wants a laugh, read the comments from opposition fans about the game.

Peaking too early, will run out of steam, don't win gfs in march, etc etc etc...

Looking forward to the 2025 premiers losing their 1st 6 games so they peak in October and throw teams off their scent.

Thinking back on the game the one thing that stood out for me that unlike last year when we get in the 20 m zone in attack it looks like we have a plan. Forwards running in pairs at the line to confuse defenders and when the defence sprints up trying to shut down our outside men all the backs seem to know a kick behind the line is on and are ready for it.

That try when Haas offloaded to Paix near the line looked like something that they have practised at training and it's awesome when that stuff comes off. I also can't wait to see Te Kura when he does that cannon ball run close to the try line.
Ye I think maguire is looking at an option now and for the future with our close linked forward play and middle 3rd attack bcos it will eventually open up for our sweep plays in a few rounds time.

Teams shut us down easily last year because they knew our points needed to come from the edges and sweep plays so they just rushed up on the edge. Now if they rush up on the outside we can score even easier in the middle 3rd. Think it will really help against teams like Penrith (eg rush up dog shot on walsh experts)

Yeah it definitely looks like something Paix has been working on... unsure if it's him or positioning of the forward, but he spots them up 1v1 and then follows around looking for the offload.

The whole middle forward rotation was great last night at getting guys 1v1... the Paix try, but also Patty got Gos 1v1 for his try and he got Willison 1v1 for him to almost score.

If they keep playing like that the middle third will become a threat that has to be respected as well... opening things up for the backline movements

Yeah it was a harsh send off. Not as harsh/blatant cheating as the Gillo one haha but it was obvious that the NRL wanted it to be a less embarrassing margin. Lots of six agains, a confirmed try with an obvious ass on the sideline.

But the Broncos held together and worked hard as Madge said in the presser. Oh on the presser isn't a dream having a coach that's able to articulate his thoughts. He said all the right things, got behind the boys, encouraged the risks they took because they earned the right to play the footy they did. But stated he was mostly impressed with their efforts in D, he could have pointed out the few stumbles in D but didn't and that was the right call. He has definitely grown as coach.
Ye on madges presser. I think when he was at souths and to a lesser extent tigers, he would have mentioned the lapses more (we had a couple) because he demands perfection. He's definitely adapted and I almost think the reputation the media give him (to try to derail us/cause controversy) is helping him because he probably doesn't need to say it to the players but they know he expects it.

Think Piakura is being a little harshly treated. I can see why he had no idea what had happened. I didn't hear a penalty given the only thing you could hear was a play on call, no whistle for the original offence.
Teddy got to his feet so quickly and tapped the ball, which is very often called back, Piaks only heard the play on call and made the tackle.
I had to rewind to see what happened.
I thought I heard the whistle that's why I knew he was gone straightaway... the play on call could be confusing in the moment though.

Well, I can’t see how Ezra gets his spot back?
That reyno/hunt 1 2 punch was a thing of beauty. Hunts defence was also a clear upgrade on Mam.

And i wasn’t a fan of the signing.
Imagine mam off the bench with hunt going to hooker for 20 mins though.... wow.... that'd break open any defence...... I think mams biggest obstacle is paix and mozer. Would be harsh to leave either of them out..

Piakura's professional foul is always a sin bin. He's gotta be feeling the pinch. Relegated to the bench and doesn't get on until the 72nd minute with his team up by 50. 1 run, 1 flop, 1 sin bin. Riki and Gos both played 80 so I guess he's seen as a middle (where we are stacked) who can cover edge.

He doesn't. Hunt is a better half and much better for Reynolds and unlocking his teammates. Paix/Smoothy/Mozer better 9's. Walters a better 14.

Hopefully it was a combination of first game of the season excitement/nerves, and then having to sit on the bench waiting for 70 minutes. Doesn't excuse the stupidity of what he did, but hopefully it's out of his system now and he settles in to being a weapon off the bench.

I would like to see him brought on a little earlier, but hard to argue with Madge's use of the interchange last night given the result.

Can work the opposite, bench players need to be pretty adaptable. Piakura sitting there unsure if he's coming on playing centre or second row and what's his role and score would use up a lot of his energy. I would almost bank on an error or penalty within one minute of him getting on.

Think debut v Sharks off the bench- on 58 minutes

Penalty 63 minute.
On report- 64 minute
Sin Bin-64 minute

11 minutes and two weeks suspension.

You could potentially get worse results. He certainly doesn't have 80 minutes of football in him though.

I have never been sold on him on the bench. He just lacks the bench smarts and adaptability you need. This is his MO from the bench.

I don't think there would be anyone waking up happier than Cory Paix. Would have been a pretty rough 18 months for him.

Feel good story.

He hasn't started since round 16, 2020. It's been a long wait and funnily enough that game was against the Roosters and a 58-12 loss.

Aside from the game it was nice to see a press conference that wasnt just a giddy school girl chatting up Reynolds. When we lose, I now pray no more arm desk wiping please.

  • Tackling technique was the best I've seen in a Broncos jersey. When they started to get a roll on, someone would find a way to slow the play the ball with good technique and not a foul. Hit hard, forced mistakes. Turned them around, peel off properly.
  • After 15 minutes, we just absorbed 110% effort from Roosters and we still looked up for the rest of the game. We'd be gassed historically after the initial arm wrestle and then concede a string of tries.
  • BARELY ANY MISTAKES in wet weather football.
  • Best 9 performance I've seen in a Broncos jersey in memory.
  • Haas truly looked like value for money. Best game I've seen him play.
  • From red zone to defense, we look the best coached we have in forever. Think theres less reliance on talent then ever. Like Penrith and Melbourne, it looks like we might have potential to make journeyman into superstars.

This side looks better coached then it ever has.

I think he initially comes off the bench, and then they shuffle however. He's an upgrade on what Billy did last night that was "good too."

I don't know where Mozer fits into a full strength team. I wouldn't be dropping Paix for a rookie.

Here we go, for the first time in 2025 and probably some absolute howlers in the appraisal as well:

1. Walsh - He was a bit rocks and diamonds but I think the condition of the field really hampered him. That said, he still ran for 220m and had some real magic. He bombed a try by running in a really weird line but otherwise, plenty to build on. Most fullbacks would be happy with a game like that but most fullbacks aren't Walsh. 7
2. Cobbo - I was super impressed with him last night. The three tries were fantastic but he seemed so calm and was smiling from the get go. That attempted try saver on Young early was what impressed me most because he came from nowhere but it also showed that he read the play and really tried to get there. He'll have better games but what a start. 8
3. Mariner - So good even in the wet. His defense has improved but is still a work in progress but he looks so threatening in attack. He looks stronger and is not afraid to get in there and do work. He's a work in progress but so much to like. 7
4. Shibasaki - Honestly, he was the surprise packet for me to the point I was actually concerned he might not be available next week. A glaring error early that led to their first try but from there, he did some really nice stuff. A really noticeable run and defended stoutly. What really stood out though was his size in yardage, I don't think we can afford to lose his metres which is an issue when you have Mariner and Staggs as your centre combo. 8
5. Arthars - What a player he has turned out to be for us on the wing. Extremely safe under the high ball and smart, some of his runs to get between defenders gets us on the front foot so well. He is a hugely important player for us on his wage, really seems to step up in big games as well. 9
6. Hunt - Welcome home mate, so good to have you back. Having him at 6 is a nightmare for opposition defenses because they have no idea what we are going to do as our 1, 6 and 7 can all run, can all pass and can all kick. Hunt really looks like he might be the missing ingredient and seeing him score what will be hard to beat as the try of the season was icing on the cake. 8
7. Reynolds - He was toying with the Roosters. They gave him way too much time and he thrived on the back of it. He looks a bit zippier too which is great. He was the architect that the rest of our weapons just thrived off. He is still such an important part of our side. 9
8. Carrigan - If you want to show any young front rower the perfect forward performance, this was it. Haas will understandably get most of the plaudits but I'd argue Carrigan was somehow even better. 246m, 22 tackles, 1 line break assist and 1 try assist - unreal. 10
9. Paix - I've always been a fan but he was next level last night. The service was fantastic and that one-two play with the middle that got his try makes us so much more threatening because suddenly, we aren't just a huge threat on both edges, we are a threat through the middle as well. 9
10. Haas - Man oh man, we got fired up Haas last night and he was unstoppable. He was skittling defenders, attacking through the middle, on the edges, offloading and stepping like a back. If he can play like that week in, week out, we aren't losing many. It wasn't just the attacking rampage, it was defense too. He wasn't just hugging blokes, he was driving them backward. Our middle will be making every other side squirm. 10
11. Gosiewski - Dare I say it, there were shades of Gillett with theway he played. He ran some beautiful lines, targeted holes in the defense and competed on every play. He also made over 100m and tackled at 100%. He also showed a bit of speed, I was impressed. Piakura has a fight on his hands to get this spot back. 8
12. Riki - Really impressive. He defended really well and they clearly directed a lot of traffic at him because he made almost three times as many tackles as Gosiewski and he barely looked troubled aside from the one time he got caught at marker and Smith scored. The exciting thing though was that he also ran with some punch. 8
13. Hetherington - Man, wasn't he great! He ran with real venom and took real advantage of the platform being laid by Carrigan and Haas. And man his defense is amazing, was cutting people down left, right and centre. Our starting middle is a thing of beauty. 9

14. Walters - He was great. Did some really nice runs from dummy half, didn't overplay his hand and what a beautiful pass he threw for a try. He kept the good work Paix did going when he came on, you can't ask for much more than that. 8
15. Jensen - He kept the middle on the front foot when he came on which is good but pushed some unnecessary offloads. You would not expect a player of his experience to do that and in a tight game, those offloads could have been momentum changing. He needs to be careful, he has two middles breathing down his throat for his spot. 6
16. Willison - He was everywhere, it was almost like we lost nothing when he replaced Haas. He also has a habit of popping up in positions props shouldn't be like fullback. I'm so glad we have him locked up. He is a legit starting middle and we have the luxury of having him come off the bench. 8
17. Piakura - He also was there. -1
