POST GAME [Round 1, 2025] Broncos vs Roosters

Trying not to get too carried away. Honestly I couldn't see much of a difference between how we played last night and 2023. We scored mostly off kicks. We had better discipline, ball control and Defence compared to 2024.

I think the Roosters were pretty terrible, similar to the teams we played in the trials. I will try and save my excitement for when we play a decent team that is playing well.

It wasn't just me then.

I feel if you are one of those on here going on about structure and also applauding those tries last night, you need to take a good long hard look at yourself in the mirror (not directed at you, just generally speaking).

Watching that game, this is a game we would have struggled with last year.

The Roosters really tried to bash us and we didn't back down from that challenge. Last year we would have struggled with that and we probably still win but definitely not in the way we did. It would have been a close game with the Roosters still being in the contest in the final 10 minutes.

The ball control was something we really struggled with as well and that was superb last night.

Yep, although I thoroughly enjoy watching that style of football. Maybe madge has not strayed far from the 2023 style of play after all which is a good thing!! It got them to a grand final after all.

Love watching in anticipation of whatever out of the box shit these guys can drum up and score points from. Its great to see!

Here we go, for the first time in 2025 and probably some absolute howlers in the appraisal as well:

1. Walsh - He was a bit rocks and diamonds but I think the condition of the field really hampered him. That said, he still ran for 220m and had some real magic. He bombed a try by running in a really weird line but otherwise, plenty to build on. Most fullbacks would be happy with a game like that but most fullbacks aren't Walsh. 7
2. Cobbo - I was super impressed with him last night. The three tries were fantastic but he seemed so calm and was smiling from the get go. That attempted try saver on Young early was what impressed me most because he came from nowhere but it also showed that he read the play and really tried to get there. He'll have better games but what a start. 8
3. Mariner - So good even in the wet. His defense has improved but is still a work in progress but he looks so threatening in attack. He looks stronger and is not afraid to get in there and do work. He's a work in progress but so much to like. 7
4. Shibasaki - Honestly, he was the surprise packet for me to the point I was actually concerned he might not be available next week. A glaring error early that led to their first try but from there, he did some really nice stuff. A really noticeable run and defended stoutly. What really stood out though was his size in yardage, I don't think we can afford to lose his metres which is an issue when you have Mariner and Staggs as your centre combo. 8
5. Arthars - What a player he has turned out to be for us on the wing. Extremely safe under the high ball and smart, some of his runs to get between defenders gets us on the front foot so well. He is a hugely important player for us on his wage, really seems to step up in big games as well. 9
6. Hunt - Welcome home mate, so good to have you back. Having him at 6 is a nightmare for opposition defenses because they have no idea what we are going to do as our 1, 6 and 7 can all run, can all pass and can all kick. Hunt really looks like he might be the missing ingredient and seeing him score what will be hard to beat as the try of the season was icing on the cake. 8
7. Reynolds - He was toying with the Roosters. They gave him way too much time and he thrived on the back of it. He looks a bit zippier too which is great. He was the architect that the rest of our weapons just thrived off. He is still such an important part of our side. 9
8. Carrigan - If you want to show any young front rower the perfect forward performance, this was it. Haas will understandably get most of the plaudits but I'd argue Carrigan was somehow even better. 246m, 22 tackles, 1 line break assist and 1 try assist - unreal. 10
9. Paix - I've always been a fan but he was next level last night. The service was fantastic and that one-two play with the middle that got his try makes us so much more threatening because suddenly, we aren't just a huge threat on both edges, we are a threat through the middle as well. 9
10. Haas - Man oh man, we got fired up Haas last night and he was unstoppable. He was skittling defenders, attacking through the middle, on the edges, offloading and stepping like a back. If he can play like that week in, week out, we aren't losing many. It wasn't just the attacking rampage, it was defense too. He wasn't just hugging blokes, he was driving them backward. Our middle will be making every other side squirm. 10
11. Gosiewski - Dare I say it, there were shades of Gillett with theway he played. He ran some beautiful lines, targeted holes in the defense and competed on every play. He also made over 100m and tackled at 100%. He also showed a bit of speed, I was impressed. Piakura has a fight on his hands to get this spot back. 8
12. Riki - Really impressive. He defended really well and they clearly directed a lot of traffic at him because he made almost three times as many tackles as Gosiewski and he barely looked troubled aside from the one time he got caught at marker and Smith scored. The exciting thing though was that he also ran with some punch. 8
13. Hetherington - Man, wasn't he great! He ran with real venom and took real advantage of the platform being laid by Carrigan and Haas. And man his defense is amazing, was cutting people down left, right and centre. Our starting middle is a thing of beauty. 9

14. Walters - He was great. Did some really nice runs from dummy half, didn't overplay his hand and what a beautiful pass he threw for a try. He kept the good work Paix did going when he came on, you can't ask for much more than that. 8
15. Jensen - He kept the middle on the front foot when he came on which is good but pushed some unnecessary offloads. You would not expect a player of his experience to do that and in a tight game, those offloads could have been momentum changing. He needs to be careful, he has two middles breathing down his throat for his spot. 6
16. Willison - He was everywhere, it was almost like we lost nothing when he replaced Haas. He also has a habit of popping up in positions props shouldn't be like fullback. I'm so glad we have him locked up. He is a legit starting middle and we have the luxury of having him come off the bench. 8
17. Piakura - He also was there. -1
Pretty good write up, mate.

I was getting ready to tag you in my egg on face post when Shiba let that first try in. Glad he turned it around and showed he could do what he was brought in for. In his defence, no one on that edge have ever played next to each other.

I felt so happy for Adam, it looked like he was able to pick his moments better rather than having to drag the whole team kicking and screaming.

Might be a weird comparison, but Haas reminded me a bit of an absolute peak Andrew Fafita - except Haas has the fitness to do it for 60 minutes instead of in short bursts.

Treat yourself to a little bit of excitement right now.

We torture ourselves all off season waiting for the games to start and when we kick off with a bang, we're entitled to sample some excitement.

Go on, just try a little bit... or are you afraid the excitement is the gateway emotion to full blown delusion?

I am a pessimist. Picture me like Squidward. Nose and all

Paix isn't a runner though so as the Roosters got tired and loose Paix won't be the guy you want. He engages and brings runners forward but doesn't run himself.

It's always been the weakness with Paix- he has guile out of dummy half but doesn't run. I have commented before that even at Cup he would not run, and I thought going back to Cup I would run 10 times a game to try and impress.

Last night, the Broncos ran 10 times from DH for the game and six of those were Walters and Shibasaki. But it's interesting that as loose as the Roosters were through the middle Paix didn't see an opportunity.

If he continues to pass and use guile, he will be perfect for the start of game but then you will need someone else to run.

Barrett is very much a hooker's pass attacking coach.
Interesting and I see what you're saying and it's not like he doesn't have the pace to make a dent if he did.

Hopefully he can add it to his game. What's Mozers running game like. I have only seen him in top grade so don't know that part of his game and can't seem to recall much from last year since I deleted it from memory haha

I think you have to see the big picture in this regard. The platform was made, the structure was there and it broke the opposition enough to allow our boys to play champagne rugby league.

In comparison in 2023 we blitzed teams with pure brilliance. But we add observable problems. Like clocking off and poor completion rates, our defence was pretty good that year from memory.

Sample size is non existent but last night was not the same as 2023 in regards to structure. The similarities are just because this team is capable of doing some pretty crazy shit.

P.S. that field was atrocious and not up to NRL standard.

P.P.S the bunker was even more atrocious ... but that was to be expected. can't wait to see how the NRL's spin doctor justifies this decision to back the bunker on Monday
Butler.

It had shades of '23 for sure. But we have never completed like that before and played with that sort of structure. Not any recent memory anyway.

It was almost odd watching this game, we we're throwing the ball around yet still completing high and playing basic, high percentage footy. It almost doesn't make sense. Especially in the wet lol.

I think Gosiewski and Shibasaki did very well. I think Mariner is lucky he moves that well cause there are a lot of areas that Shibasaki brings far more. Nearly enough personally to pick him over Mariner. I think it’s close enough now that by the end of the year Mariner will be by far better. Mariner has performed well in all his games this year despite some errors yesterday. Can’t blame Madge if he goes the other way after last night though tbf.

Gosiewski, excellent I thought. Brought everything Piakura doesn’t plus some. Couldn’t have asked for more.

Piakura obviously dumb mistake but I put a lot of blame on Madge for the position he found himself in yesterday. Cannot accept you having a bloke like Piakura on the bench playing a 10-15 minute second row role at the end of the game. When Kev got the best out of Brendan it was by introducing him to grade from the bench, but it was predominantly with a role through the middle, which he was quite successful at. It just completely dumbed down the footy, he could make some good carries, get his timing, get his confidence and fitness up. Every time he found himself on the edge that year he was leaps and bounds our best back rower and leaps and bounds better than he has been at any other stage in his career so far. It worked. Give him more of a role than that of yesterdays. I think it was really poor management personally.

You tinker things and learn what the best rotation is but that’s just a completely wrong outlook on how to use Piakura. He doesn’t quite understand his player yet if he thinks 10-15 minutes at the end of the game is gonna get Piakura up to potential or to fire up to his expectations. It’s not so much his mindset that completely limits Piakura, he is a very flawed player that needs development on the edge still. Some of those principles can be learned far more simply in the middle.

You have to remember Piakura did not earn his place in NRL. It came very undeserved from some very underwhelming performances in cup. He played very well in that middle/second rower cover role that eventually led into the string of performances you saw where he excelled at second row.

In fairness his trial form was some of the better footy he has played at that level. Do not, not use the bloke. Play him through the middle for 20 earlier in the game and then give Gos the rest at the end. Get him his 25-30 plus minutes a game with a stint in the middle and a stint on the edge.

Mozer is strategic, he might only run twice but it will be at the right moment and will bring a result because he doesn't do it unless he has thought it through.

For me the benchmark is Grant, he is the best green light player in the game.

Walters was only average of 2.6 times a game last year and Grant was 6.4.

In Cup Rimba won the Petero Medal running 5.3 times a game from 23 games and Paix was 4.1 from 20 games, Mozer was 4.9 from 13 games.

It's not just a matter of saying I am going to run five times, it has to be a reason to run and Grant is the best at seeing that reason. That's what made it odd last night, Roosters through the middle were terrible but Paix didn't see anything to run. I don't have much doubt Grant runs last night at some point.
