6 man bench now mate. You can only use 4 of them though.
Yeah I know... talking about 4 forwards in Willison, Talty, Tawha and Jhunt... with the other 2 covering hooker and backs.

Tawha and Jhunt are basically the same type of player, so one of them will drop out

Haven't thought about the 6 man bench a bit longer now, I only get the 4th forward in the 6 man bench IF the 4th one provides a point of difference (eg ben te kura) or is a rookie we want to drip feed into the team (eg tupou francis, beni Allen, etc), but otherwise it just seems a waste.

If any forward goes down we have cover (2nd row = tawha, prop/lock = willison plays longer which he is very, very capable of +talty increases slightly). I like j hunt, but we'd be better off with longer minutes from the above than having him come in.

I think that 5th spot should go to Anderson, then arthurs, duffy, mozer for the other pick. It should be thought about as a point of "this team has X weakness, with this extra spine/outside backs we can exploit it if the game falls that way".

Much more likely that scenario arises than 2 injuries in the forwards in the 1st half (2nd half we can cover anyway for a short stint). Not saying it wont happen, but less often for sure.

I don't think you need Duffy on the bench when we have cover for the halves in the event of an injury.

I imagine Hunt is there in case Gos gets injured. We're better off with Tawha and Willison playing in the middle third rather than on the edge.

Wait, Hunt is being given the 9 but will play off the bench?

I think moving forward teams the only guaranteed spots on the bench are the two stock middles that play every game and split time with the starting middles... for us that is currently Willison and Talty.

Most benches are likely to also carry a hybrid forward who can play either middle or edge and looks to be Tawha for us. They aren't typically required to play a lot of minutes; however coaches were flirting with this over the last few seasons. Payten has so many second rowers that he was playing 1 for 80, then the other two would split 30/50... Flanagan doing it with Luciano. Webster with his edges, Sticky with Hosking, Ivan with whoever is on his left edge each week, etc.

With the 6 man bench this probably reverts back to 2x 80min edges and a backup on the bench that comes on if injury occurs, because coaches will want to leave that interchange spot open for as long as possible.

A lot of teams will still need to carry the utility in 14, because there are so few 80mins hookers and they will need to split time across that position.

Every team will surely carry a winger or outside back in one of the extra two bench spots, but from there that last spot can become a bit team dependent.

It may become someone that is dependent on the opposition... or potentially a mainstay that covers a position that can't be covered during injury (mostly halves).

I think there's a good chance it becomes that Qld style utility we've been using for years... a back/spine player that can play through the middle.

The talk about utilities dying off doesn't sound correct to me... I think if anything they become more valuable. if you've got someone like Wishart on the bench he can play hooker or lock in a normal game and cover 6 for injury. That opens up a spot on your bench for an X factor player.

Guys that have no versatility and aren't starters are the ones that will struggle to get on the field... excluding your 2 props.

A guy that can only play edge will really struggle to get on the field if coaches go back to 2x 80min backrowers.

Anyone get the very bad, and very very familiar, feeling that with all the stars (eg Crichton, cleary) getting off from charges and the public outcry, they will use a broncos player to "put their foot down" and "set an example" that everyone is treating equal, before never going anyone that same charge/weeks ever again (eg staggs, carrigan, haas)

Depends which player is dumb enough to do it. Walsh is as protected species as any of them so it won’t be him

No.

I don't like playing the victim, losers do that.

Thursday night's game will be crucial. If there's a questionable shot that doesn't get referred, the Friday chatter will be intolerable and the 'foot down' moment will be incoming. Though I think we're just as likely as the Warriors, Roosters and Panthers to wear the overcorrection.

Then again if the MRC get it out of their system early with the Storm/Parra game, we'll be sweet.

Storm v Parra might have a bit more spice about it after the Lomax saga
