Good solo try there to Fensom to finish for the Raiders.
In the end, a solid 'get-out-of-jail' victory for the Raiders. If they had have lost that, it would have been a huge shot to their confidence but they hung in there and came up with the big plays when they needed to. There were some good signs from their new recruits and I thought a couple of their senior players (Papalii, Vaughan, Soliola, Croker etc.) stood up and did well for them. Still a couple of worrying signs from 2015 but it's a performance they can build on.
On the other hand, Penrith look in all sorts to me. They remind me a lot of the Broncos under Hook, where they've got the talent but simply lack the direction. I'm not about to write them off or bag Hook just yet but he's got to address some deficiencies from the game. As poor as the playmakers were, I thought their middle men really struggled. Campbell-Gillard had a strong 2015, but he looked off the pace in this game, McKendry is a player that peaked early and never kicked on, Latimore is a real handy bench option but that's all he is and Matagi is just very one dimensional. It really only gives them Merrin and as good as he is, he can't carry a team just yet. They've got a couple of really tough weeks infront of them against the Bulldogs and Broncos. They have to win either game to give themselves a chance here.
