If we're treating the Magpies game as a trial, I'm selecting Mam at 6, Mozer at 9, Smoothy at 8, BTK on the bench and Marty in reserves. Hetherington and Baker are back in Cup. I'd also be seriously looking at Black on the bench rather than Walters/Paix.

I'd even consider switching Marty and Jensen.
You’re dropping Patty for Smoothy?

1. Cobbo
2. Mariner
3. Staggs
4. Shibasaki
5. Arthars
6. Mam
7. Reynolds
8. Jensen
9. Walters
10. Haas
11. Riki
12. Piakura
13. Carrigan
14. Mozer
15. Willison
16. Te Kura
17. Smoothy

Genuinely from what I’ve seen this year this should be the side. Willison could be SR but I wanted to strengthen the middle rotation. Smoothy has played well in cup at lock and wouldn’t mind giving him a crack with a different body and skill set through the middle in a more permanent basis. Give Patty 60 play Smoothy 20.

Please Madge. Please

Justin Hodges on Ezra's game today:

“It (the shoulder charge on report) was a good shot. We don’t see enough of that. He didn’t hit him high. We were blowing up about that. He will be fine."
“Ezra was outstanding. That just shows the type of player that he is. He is too good to be playing here but obviously it is a privilege to have him. He is a first grade player. I’m pretty sure he will be back up there next week. Once Ezra gets back things should change for the Broncos. You have a look at the success they had in 2023, everything came off the back of Ezra and Adam Reynolds steering things around."
“Look at all those little neat and tidy things he did like popping up with off-loads, kick chases, and scoring tries off kicks. You need that guy … once Ezra gets back he will give them that confidence.’’
“He has learned his lesson. We all make mistakes. Hopefully he can move forward and have a great career. It was good to see him back. He hasn’t played for a long time. He went out there and found his feet and is a classy player. He is a humble man and a young kid who has made his way back into rugby league. This game gives people second chances. The week he has had here he has been inspirational for our group and a great leader.’’

Ezra:

“It definitely feels good to be back on the field. It is a great feeling to be back doing what I love and it was good to see friends and family and some of the boys down here. It is first game back and I’d be lying if I said I was ready. I’m just grateful to be back playing.’’

For this game or any other NRL games, we can’t use SunBoy Baker… seriously…
Was it just me that noticed that he ran a decoy like 9/10 times. Players actively looked to NOT pass him the ball 🤣
He is that big for nothing, Soviet kid that somehow ended up on your school footy team. He wants to play, but no one really takes Boris seriously. So they put him out there when one of the actual good players needs a 10 minute spell.
**** OFF BAKER! You are not first grade material. Accept it. I did mate, I realised and stopped. Do it! Do it for the organisation and the fans.

His team mates seem to like him. For what that's worth.

Please don't misunderstand my gripe with Baker. I can’t and won’t attack the man personally. I don’t know him. I am commenting on him as a fan who pays his membership each year. As a first grade footballer he ain’t shit. As a bloke? He might be the best cat out there and the nicest bloke to ever don the jersey.

This will also be the last round for everyone to impress for an Origin Game 1 jersey. Depending on how everyone plays this week I predict the following:

Patty and Payne are certainties. Cobbo is likely, and I wouldn't be surprised if Piakura is asked to train with the QLD squad again. I know I joke about Billy, but with Hunt down and Grant coming back from injury you never know. Realistically though Tommy D deserves that 14 jersey.

Not going to go through all the other teams however I will say my pick for a debut is Xavier Savage.

So with T&T players available now, I'd love to see us roll this out (my first team list was a frustration one):

1. Cobbo
2. Shibasaki
3. Mariner
4. Staggs
5. Arthars
6. Mam
7. Reynolds
8. Willison
9. Walters
10. Haas
11. Piakura
12. Riki
13. Carrigan

14. Mozer
15. Jensen
16. Te Kura
17. Powell/Smoothy

Shibasaki is less athletic than our front rowers. No chance am I putting him under high balls.

I’d go Smoothy over Powell. I like Tristan but he isn’t going to provide anything at first grade that overly deserves an out of nowhere selection. Smoothy has been playing well at lock and provides a different body shape which will be very important with a lot of similar body shapes in the forward rotation. Throwing different body sizes and leg speeds is part of the art of a forward rotation.

Bears forwards have been disappointing and Powell has played his part in that, no impact at all in his runs, defence is holding up though. Too many penalties from him. West and Coster are bailing them out. I don't know if it's no Polotoni for the first time in 9 years, but Francis potentially makes more impact at the moment in a Bears Cup forward pack with his runs.

Do you actually watch the games Mick ?
Dude offloaded for a line break . Then offloaded again later . Probably had the fastest play the balls in the game .

But don`t let that let in the way of your narrative .

According to Brien Seeney, most likely return for Hunt - if he genuinely has torn hamstring off the bone as reported by Badel - is Round 16 against the Sharks. That's 6 weeks. 4 is a bit fanciful. This is regardless of whether he has surgery.

Who the **** cares at this point.

Might as well switch Cobbo and Haas for the lolz
