Well just got home from my first Magic Round weekend and I'm buggered, overall I enjoyed the three days, the atmosphere created by the fans walking down Caxton street and at the stadium is just awesome.
On the first 2 days I was lucky enough to be sitting in the 3rd and 4th row back from the field right beside the home team tunnel, so was able to see plenty of the characters and players, Vlando was even within spitting distance at one point but I remained calm.
On Sunday, I was sitting higher up and we were surrounded by and seriously outnumbered by Wahs fans, I reckon Broncos fans were outnumbered at least 3 to 1, fortunately they were all pretty friendly characters and the spirit was good. The Wahs cheers and boos just drowned us out tho, it was humbling.
I can really see our boys are down on confidence, but across the board we were really poor, I thought our forwards sort of held their own but we killed ourselves with poor ball control and not taking our chances and things sort of steam rolled over us.
Patty is really becoming a bit of problem, his metres are good but the attention he is receiving from the refs is hurting us.
Our defence in behind the ruck was really poor as was our kicking. We really needed Hunt, Reyno and Reece to stand up and lead the way with so many injuries and new guys in the team but they just haven't.
Klein was diabolical, at times we were actually getting back behind him in the defensive line trying not to concede a set restart. The Reece HIA without a penalty was laughable and killed the game, I think what makes it worse is that Egan who received a much bigger knock earlier in the game was all good to play on.
The football, if I'm honest across the weekend was a little meh, couple of good moments but in general all the games just seemed the same, the refs in everything, they ignore things one moment then throw out a set restart for some other thing at random. The rapid fire set restarts on the Saturday games became really tiresome.
I don't really know exactly what it is but the game really seems to have lost something, the officials just don't seem to want to let the teams play football and sort out the winner, they just don't seem to have respect for the players and the effort that goes into preparing and playing the game every week.
Its like the game is now between each team and the referee rather than a contest between two teams, the team who wins the battle with the referee goes a long way to winning the game.
Would I go again, hmmmm not sure, I guess I'm partially clouded by how our boys played yesterday but the game is just in a really weird state at the moment, the fans are doing their part to carry it but the officials and administration have lost their way.
