POST GAME [Round 2, 2025] Broncos vs Raiders

Certain players had off games (Walsh), but at the end of the day we came up against a side peaking in the first month of the season who were fired up at their home ground. The wahs were embarrassed by them in Vegas and then comprehensively beat manly who many had as premiership contenders. People aren’t ringing alarm bells on Riff’s season after they got dominated (the game was only close from a points perspective because of ref game management at the end to set up a grand stand finish) by a reserve grade rorters.

Canberra played like this in the first month of last year and burnt out quickly.

Edit: the intentional six agains have been a joke this round. Both manly and Canberra were just blatantly infringing while defending their lines.

Too much nice guys going on, Canberra won from the mentality they started with and built from that, We have better forwards I think for a round by round basis, but they targeted this game like it was a GF and we got folded.

I agree with you but if Canberra want to play their GF in round 2 that’s fine. Happy to play like fuckheads in round 2 against a team that couldn’t play better and still only lose by 10. Congrats Raiders.

Staggs will get the choice but a left side Mariner is better than a left side Shiba any day.

Shiba makes a lot more metres coming out of te red zone than either Mariner or Staggs .
He`s a big boy . I was taking note of his game last night .

rhe 2 biggest examples were the right to left kick on our try line where he just walked and ball watched - the ball hits the deck and he then starts to run but had he at least been jogging toward where the ball was going he would’ve easily been able to get there before Papali.

The exit sets need an overhaul. Mariner might be able to make something of himself, if he retires that 3m slow play the ball run he's in love with. I don't get the logic, he positions himself like a decoy, gets the ball flat footed and proceeds to get smashed like a pinata.

And if I`m Selwyn I `m giving Mariner a spray for that pass high and wide from dummy half when he was like 2 metres out from the Broncos try line . That led to Cobbo getting steam rolled by 5 Raiders and losing the ball .

I always enjoy reading the salient points you all make, and on a night where we didn't mentally turn up, a few noticeable positive things I'm liking out of this game, is I feel we did not totally capitulate and played to the 80. Hallelujah, Payne Hass is finally starting to offload, but our forward pack needs to push up on him more on the edges and give the 1/2 's a chance for more 2nd phase play. I just though Hass had to go looking for support a bit last night, when it should have been a freight train behind him, ready to hot potato it. Deine Mariner is looking a much-improved runner and probably now earnt his 3/4 spot. Keep Selwyn on the wing. Put Jesse under more high ball at training! If they can really finesse this back line with Stags and Ezra , our running game looks really exciting, providing Reece Walsh can learn to chime in and draw and pass properly! I have no doubt this roster is very capable, and this may be the timely loss we needed to win going forward. Yes the Green Machine was very good last night but we can be 100% better. Flog em at training Madge , when some more combinations start working consistently, we'll be the outfit to beat. Let's Go Broncos.

The defence was completely off from the start.

The catch and wrap garbage was back and we went away from those gang tackles to pick them up and drag them backwards, which has been evident since the trials.

Off loads stopped the gang tackles .

The next was the starling try where it ricocheted off a few feet, instead of playing to the whistle, Walsh starts complaining to the ref while the ball is still live and Starling scores. Regardless of what he saw, you play to the whistle and complain after.

It's really disappointing to see this kind of thing still occurring. With each new coach, my hope is that players are actually held accountable for what should be considered inexcusable actions like complaining to ref while the ball is live.

I have hope that Maguire will be the one that finally lets the boys know they cannot do these things, but neither Seibold or Kevvie were able to do it. We have watched players more focused on doing a dive for the camera than putting the ball down closer to the posts, players switching off after the opposition crosses the try-line so they can run it around under posts and ref complaining while the opposition plays the whistle and scores.

Just off the top of my head, I can remember Ben Teo and Alex Glenn (captain fantastic) staring at the ref expecting a knock-on call while Blake Fergusson plays the whistle and makes a break down the sideline. Milf complaining to ref (disputing an Isaako lost ball) while Benji picks up the ball and scoots away to score. Then you've got Kotoni and Walsh who are more interested in scoring in front of the camera than helping the team and running it closer to the posts.

Would be great to see a team of players that understand the things that we learned in juniors. Earning over a million dollars and not being able to play the whistle is absolutely absurd.

Yeah it boggles the mind. Not sure how so many players have shown such poor game awareness and attitude o we such a long stretch of time.

Developing and recruiting the wrong type of player. Reynolds and Capewell still seem the only guys since Gillett retired who understand the basics.

Definitely reasonable to assume the season is over and it's time to sack most of the team.

One thing that I found a bit strange is that there was an obvious early game plan to run Haas out wide and target Fogerty.

He seemed to do this every run for the first 15-20 minutes. It didn’t really have much impact as they handled him well and Fogerty seemed unimpaired in attack.

I get the tactic, run a big guy at a half - it’s pretty straight forward. Kev did the exact thing once with TPJ on Sam Walker to great success. The strange thing is that it seemed to disappear after 15 minutes and never return.

Did Madge just give up on it? Did Haas stop following the game plan? Was it only ever intended to be the first 15 minutes?

It’s the kind of tactic that only bares fruit if you persist with it until the half is actually too tired to be effective in attack. i can’t see the desired outcome in making him tackle Haas for the first 10 to 15 minutes and then leaving him alone entirely the rest of the game.

I was thinking about this exact thing. And while in theory it sounds like a good tactic, in practice it means that we are not fatiguing their middle forwards at all. If we're avoiding them and going wide for cheap metres, their middles are nice and fresh for when we eventually do run down the middle (and contain us easily), and again with the ball in hand.

We lost because of fatigue. We defended like crap because of fatigue. That fatigue was caused by us dropping the ball and defending so much, and them making zero errors in the second half until like the 65th or 70th minute (by which point the game was gone).
