POST GAME Round 2 - Sharks vs Broncos

Maranta is improving all the time and even showed some speed and footwork. He is not going to be a short-term star but he is getting there, I hope we persist with him.

Maranta seems to receive every attacking pass flat footed, or from behind him. Now I know a lot of the passes Hodges threw were tap-ons without much aim, but it seems to happen all the time, not just last night.

If they pass it at all. I get it that the idea of passing to Maranta might not be appealing but our centres and fullbacks have pretty much ignored our wingers. Hoggman was notorious for this, Copley is guilty of this too when he moves to centre. Too often when our wingers do get the ball the lads have drawn the defence over too.

Maranta and Oates were hitting it up the middle. Oates can pull this off but Maranta...not so much. Strikes me as odd especially when we have Blair making stuff all.

There are a lot of ball hogging centres in the NRL...if this was 20 or more years ago, they'd probably think we were playing with 4 wingers a side. Some hog more than others though, and ours are more on the "more" end of scale.

Just some more stats to back up how good our defence was the other night..

McCullough - 56 tackles (1 missed)
McGuire - 43 tackles (1 missed)
Parker - 43 tackles (1 missed)
Blair - 38 tackles (1 missed)
Gillett - 37 tackles (0 missed)
Glenn - 32 tackles (3 missed)

That's outstanding from our starting big men.

NRLStats has it different as usual. Their stats in bold. Blair & Glenn looking like the weak links. Interestingly, of the bench forwards, not one missed tackle between them. Thaiday in particular with 33 tackles. Joffa with 17 in 17 minutes.

I really wish it was like the NBA where there was just one set of stats, that everyone goes by, none of this 10 different websites all with different variations of stats and shit.

On the topic of dummy half service, I don't know how people reached their conclusion that Nikorima's service was as good let alone better than McCullough's. Not that it's a huge win on Macca's behalf but Nikorima looked a little unsure of himself and his passes weren't exactly sharp either. I actually thought McCullough did well to get the team on the front foot on a number of occasions.

The only positive is that he doesn't run the same stupid inside play that McCullough does. The way that plays is executed is terrible and quite honestly is something that needs to be put back into the kit bag. What happens is, Andrew McCullough scoots out of dummy half before handing it back to his inside runner who was the intended first receiver. The problem is, McCullough is usually impeding the runner causing the runner to slow up on the run and making him easy meat for the defence. I saw him force Gillett and Wallace into those runs and they were complete wastes.

Must say despite his lack of involvement in offence, Gillett's defence looks a lot better. He's usually the guy taking out the legs and on occasion really dragging the ball carrier back. No doubt he needs to get more involved but the Broncos have to look for him to get more involved. Against the Cowboys, I really hope we see a lot more edge running from him and Glenn.

McCullough stands and then ***** the ball back and then passes in THREE motions, often over the head or behind the intended recipient, Nikorima was passing as he stood off the ground in one motion, often to a runner in motion who didn't have to stop and wait for the pass to come. Nikorima was not some inspirational debut but in that very important facet of dummy half play, he was noticeably more crisp.

I'd much prefer if Maranta put his foot down, looking to go on the outside of his opponent and then put a big right foot step on his opposition defender whilst still moving forward, rather than how he basically just cuts back inside and comes to a stop succumbing to the tackle.

I don't know how else to explain it but sort of similar to the trademark Hodges right foot step and how he angles himself and looks to go on the outside before stepping off his right foot and slicing between the defence.

For all the criticism that McCullough receives the players that forumers have called for him to be replaced by haven't had much of an impact at their new clubs. Anyone heard of Baptise since his move to Canberra? You would have thought he was the world's best hooker the way he was rated around here. Also, Granville can't even get the starting hookers job from a halfback and will be lucky to keep his spot after two losses. Again, another player who was lauded on here as better than Macca.

Got to agree. Some of the criticism he receives is at times a little exaggerated and bit over the top. He seems to cop the most out of any player except Maranta. There a rumours Manly are chasing him, so he can't be all that crap. I'm a fan of McCullough, and yes there are things he has to improve and do better, but that goes for everyone. He is definitely not nearly as bad as some consider him to be.

Granville has been up in NQ for all of two games, give him a chance to get into their system. Baptiste was injured most of last year I think. But regardless, even if those guys haven't set the world on fire, who cares? Since when do the Brisbane Broncos accept mediocrity? We are the Broncos, we demand improvement and success. These are two things I don't see Macca demonstrating.
