POST GAME [Round 27, 2023] Broncos vs Storm

I know we had a reserve line-up but still pretty disappointing game. They may not have the experience of the starting line-up but you just ask for effort and I don't think some players put in 100%.

I'm Oates biggest fan but he looks well off the speed. His run is so laboured, like he's dragging a 20kg barbell plate behind him. His runs out of a defensive 20m has been invaluable but I'm leaning to Arthurs starting in front of him.

Imagine you arm wrestled a guy for 8 years and lost every time.

Now imagine there is a hell of a lot riding on your next arm wrestle against the same guy.
You are for sure going into that contest with doubt and low confidence.

A win last night would have put a stop to that.

I cant get my head past what a win, however insignificant in the scheme of the season is concerned, would have done for the mindset of the Broncos going into the finals.

1 - You are minor premiers, a feat which in the past has lead 100% of the time to the Premiership.
2 - You broke an 8 year long curse against your bogey side that has had your number on every occasion.
3 - You reclaim your home ground against the side that has effectively set up shop in your house for almost a decade.

I have a bad bad feeling resting players last night was a mistake.

History has already forgotten we deliberately fielded a spectacularly shit team last night. Let the records show we lost to the Storm again.

Another thing that irks me about last night and resting so many players is the fact we only just had the bye two weeks ago.

I might understand it better if we had all our bye's earlier in the season and we had been grinding it out for the past few months, but the team just got back from a rest and we also had momentum on our side.

Well, that momentum has hit a brick wall with our bogey team.
We rested a side that basically just came back from a rest.

The more i reflect on this, the more i think it was a monumentally bad decision.

The Lions hadn’t beaten the Melbourne Demons in the AFL for ages as well and lost late in the season two years ago. Two weeks later they played them again in the finals and smashed them. Have won every game against them since except for a 1 point loss this year. This will be the last time the Storm bests us for some time. We’ll smash them in finals.
By every game since, you mean one game? You're talking about the 2022 finals series. 😂

Just seeing a replay of the storm intercept try this morning and you can really see the wrong decision made by madden. The play was on but he didn’t realise a tired forward didn’t track him on the inside. Had he stepped back in it was try time. Wishart sets up a try with the exact play for the storm later on. Madden definitely has potential but needs a lot of work.
Good spot. It's more annoying when you've seen jock more than willing to run and back himself on other occasions. Very unlucky turning point if the game for us.

Going on this logic, what happens if we went in with out A team and still lost?

Thinking about the game, it really seemed like we just needed one or two guys out there to calm us down and not shit the bed. We were really competitive until kevs words faded in their ears, and just kinda lost the plot. An effective old hand might proved invaluable. Dare I say, maybe Walters? Or capewell?
Flegler seemed sort of invisible as captain. I can't even remember if we challenged.
Plus, why would you give a penalty Magnet the captaincy...

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Storm/Broncos curse after this match.

So we haven’t beaten Melbourne full stop since 2016 I think.

2016 (until this year) was probably the last year we could claim to have been a good team. Melbourne during that same period have won 4 minor premierships, 2 premierships and have lost 2 grand finals. Is it that much of an anomaly to suggest we wouldn’t beat them in this time?

Going back to 2009 at Suncorp, similar vibes. They played through the period mentioned above as well as having some of the best QLDers of all time playing for them while also benefiting from the aftermath of the cap cheating.

We are due as **** and will smash them the next time we meet with a full squad who have shown we are primed.
cant get my head around it... at start didnt care...then we looked good...then shit then lost the doesnt care kicked out hate losing especially to the scum bring on next week

People saying Melbourne are beatable because of last night - that was their B team too ffs.

A reminder: we rested players to avoid 11 day concussions, injuries & suspensions. Considering we came out of last night with 2 players likely out next week, Kev is vindicated. Could you imagine if Walsh or Payne’s legs were twisted off too? There’d be hysteria against Kev for naming them (obviously there won’t be a word for the storm doing the twisting)

Then we deserve the loss fair and square, but at least we gave ourselves the best possible chance of doing two things.

Winning the minor premiership (which has resulted in us winning the GF everytime)
And putting a stop to an embarrassing losing streak.

Im no NRL coach, so im certain Kevvie knows what he is doing much better than some Storm hating Bronco fan on a forum.

I also think if it was ANY other team, i would probably rest a couple players as well (more to avoid injury/suspension/HIA stuff than any other reason).
I just think resting players against the team that has had your number for the past decade is one of those must win scenarios.

As if losing last night was not bad enough, coming on here and hearing some of the gloom and doom merchants makes a wee bit harder to take. The grubs had experience in the positions that counted last night. Our halves were clunky at best and obviously did not know how to exploit a 12 man line up for 10 minutes.

We showed bellyache nothing for the finals and to say it has dented our confidence is just stupid. If anything it has made the guys who played last night want to lift and the guys who never will want to ensure the grubs do not get away with the liberties they were afforded last night.

If Hoeter had passed off to Piakura last night he scores under the posts and we pull away from them. The dumb intercept pass that let them back into the game. Small mistakes that change a game totally and that is why these guys are in Q cup.

We will be fresh when we play the finals and we now know we are only three wins away from bagging the big one.

We've got this.

Yep, i see why Kev did what he did, and i would for sure be one the guys calling for blood if he played our star players and they got injured or suspended leading into the finals, but fmd i hate t he Storm and want to beat them almost as much as winning the premiership.

Im a doom and gloom guy when it comes to the Storm, sorry bro.

There are pro's and cons to how last night was handled, i just cant figure out if the pros outweigh the cons or vice versa.

They've looked beatable most of this season. Even the Dragons and Titans stuck with them over the last two weeks. I don't think last night had any real bearing on that.

Winning the minor premiership (which has resulted in us winning the GF everytime)

We could still win it, plus we've won the GF without having won it it too. No big deal.
