Round 3 Discussion

Dear oh dear oh dear...

Manly had just been left off the hook then Taupau gives away a lazy penalty.

Manly have shown better resolve this week.

Their defence improved as the game wore on and they finished the half the better side.

Apart of it is because Cronulla lack that killer punch. Their sole try came from a good cross-field kick from Maloney, otherwise the gameplan seems off. For whatever reason, they're really trying to work DCE over when their strength is all down the other side of the field. Townsend, Barba, Bird and Holmes have been their most likely at the start of the season but they've received very few opportunities to take on Matai and Taufua. In fact, when Bird has received the ball it's usually to take on Walker back on the inside.

But credit to Manly, there were some positive signs there. I really like the inclusion of Tom Symonds on the fringe - he's been great next to DCE and has come up with some good plays in defence. Also got to give a wrap to their backs, they've really helped their forwards out and given Manly plenty of opportunities to hit-back. Unfortunately the play hasn't been quite there for Manly with a lot of passes going behind players.

That try to Parcell should do them the world of good. They didn't deserve it at all, it was horrible play from Vave but the play from Lawrence on Lewis was fantastic. And boy, you do not want to give Parcell an inch. If ya blink, he scores.

I didn't think there was a lot in the Taupau hit. Maybe that's just a worried SVRL coach talking.

Unless they let Bird's injury influence the charge, he'll miss two weeks tops.

What a kick from Tommy Turbo!

The Prince of Brooky strikes again.

Huge tackle by Parcell on Fifita.

Shades of the Melbourne v Broncos game down at AAMI Park.

Great pass from Mateo.

Manly look home and hosed here.

Weight of possession and Cronulla finally put a play on down the right.

Cronulla aren't out of it yet baby.

Sharks are back in the game. Holmes in for a try.

Manly with a good chance to put this game to bed after a mistake from Maloney.

18-12 Manly.

Sharks have to work it out of their own half.

Feki can't handle Maloney's pass and Turbo Tom races away to score a great run-away try.

Shades of Round 26 there for Cronulla.

Pretty good win from Manly tonight. The Sharks had plenty of opportunity to win but couldn't take them.

Full-Time

Manly Sea Eagles 22 (Parcell, Stewart, J. Trbojevic, T. Trbojevic tries; Lyon 3/4 goals)
Cronulla Sharks 12 (Lewis, Holmes tries; Maloney 2/3 goals)

Really spirited win by Manly. Had to make 41 tackles inside their own half and only had two tries put them. That's a big improvement on previous weeks. The return of Brett Stewart provided them with plenty of shape and with all the talent on board they just had too many points in them for Cronulla.

On the other side of the coin, Cronulla clearly struggled for points. Maloney didn't have his best game and he appears to be struggling to adjust at Cronulla. I don't think it helps that he's gone from a left edge of Jennings and Tupou to Leutele and Feki.

It's going to be interesting to see whether Manly can back that performance up on Saturday when they take on the Roosters. As we've seen so far, teams have struggled to manage the short turn-arounds and there were enough signs there to suggest Manly have yet to complete a 180.

Meanwhile Cronulla return to Shark Park to take on Melbourne in Monday Night Football. You can just feel the grind already...it won't be pretty but I'm sure it'll be close.
