In a stunning development, Michael Maguire has reportedly stepped down as head coach of the Brisbane Broncos following an emergency late-night meeting with club officials.

According to The Courier-Mail, Maguire informed key figures of his decision late Tuesday night after tensions behind the scenes reached a breaking point.

The shock exit comes less than six months after Maguire guided Brisbane to their drought-breaking 2025 premiership, making the timing of the move all the more surprising.

Pressure had reportedly been building in recent weeks, particularly following the sudden resignation of defensive coach Ben Te'o, which is understood to have stemmed from an internal disagreement within the coaching staff.

The situation has been further complicated by the confirmed future departure of star prop Payne Haas to South Sydney, a move that has fuelled speculation around the club’s long-term direction.

Sources familiar with the situation have indicated players were informed early this morning, with several senior figures said to be “shocked” given the club’s strong start to the 2026 season.

Assistant coaches are expected to take over in the interim as the club scrambles to respond to what is shaping as one of the most unexpected coaching exits in recent NRL history.

"It’s not great optics" said Dragons and Titans great Gorden CONEHEAD.

More to come.

Almost got me but I looked at the calendar just in time.

I am proud of my Gorden CONEHEAD quote though 😆
I think that's what gave it away to me... like they woke up Gordie at 6am to get a quote and all he could provide is "not great optics" haha

Nice try chuckle nuts.

Someone on facebook(?) got me a few years back with a season ending injury to Haas. Been skeptical ever since.
