Smashing the Hayne Barrier

Hayne was pretty good on Sunday IMO. He wasn't dominant and he wasn't the MOTM, but he did his job well and provided some good organization (except that first half shank of a kick). I think the hype he's built up has had an equally adverse affect among his haters.

I do find it very hard to believe that he'd run the 100m in 11 seconds though. Pretty sure he got run down by Cooper and Morris after making that first half break, and FMD if Cooper could run the 100m in 11 seconds.

So how do you stop him? How will the Titans do it? I'd say a lot of it will come down to their kicking game which was absymal against the Broncos. I'd reckon they will use the tactics they used against Melbourne when they played down there to keep Slater out of the game as much as possible and just kick it dead or in to touch as much as possible. Give Hayne as minimal chances in broken play as possible.

Of course that's only a small part of it though as so much of his brilliance in the second half of this season has been in general play and not just from the kick return.

Break his jaw.

Do what St George did in the last round. Do not kick to him, kick to Burt, tackle Burt, have your defensive line set when he comes in to take the dummy half run and smash him with big forwards. Do that a few times and I think he will disappear out the back.

Ha - that's awesome, but they can be recovered from, go for the spine

And he's always going to look exceptional in a team that is lacking any superstars. Hence why he got so many Dally M points in the last however many rounds. If Parra win, he gets the points because he's the one that 'stands out'. I can't believe he got man of the match on Sunday, nor can a lot of Parra fans I know. They don't reckon he was even in the top 3 on Sunday, yet channel 9 are still kissing his arse and giving him the award.

I've said for many years that the Dally M award really tends to reward the one-man teams. With exceptions, of course - particularly when one or two teams really dominate (see Melbourne/Manly last year).

How to stop Hayne or break through the barrier? I don't think you particularly need to.

He's in hot form, yes, and by himself he's likely to pull something out and score one or two tries. But how to minimise his impact? Keep your defensive line set and strong, and stop the Eels forwards from offloading at will.

Hayne is at his most dangerous in broken field play. A strong, solid defensive line and a good kick-chase is key to beating parra. Fortunately, the Broncos have one of the best kick-chase games in the competition IMO.

Kick to Burt and limit the offloads of the forwards is how you make Hayne quiet.

I think the best way to stop Hayne would be to bash him and make him work for every touch he gets of the football.
