Staggs back at Broncos 'home' to torment Dolphins

The return of Kotoni Staggs from injury will give Brisbane an injection of power and passion for the derby clash with the Dolphins.

Staggs has not played in the opening three rounds due to a hip flexor injury but is the man who set the scene for the 'Battle of Brisbane' rivalry in the inaugural match in 2022.

After scoring a match-winning late try he jubilantly cried out 'this is our home' after the Dolphins had claimed co-tenancy rights at Suncorp Stadium in the buildup.

Staggs will have a full week of training at right centre and AAP understands he will replace Deine Mariner for Friday night's showdown. Gehamat Shibasaki, fresh from one of his best ever NRL matches in the 26-16 over North Queensland, will retain his spot at left centre.

The Broncos are 2-1 after three rounds and the Dolphins (0-3) are still searching for their first win.

You won't see the Broncos puffing their chests out this week. They are internally taking an underdog mentality into the match after the Dolphins put the cleaners through them 40-4 in round 26 last year.

Prop Payne Haas won the Carl Webb Medal as man of the match in the win over the Cowboys and is just happy Staggs is back for a game he usually thrives in.

The 26-year-old Staggs was on the cusp of returning last week but coach Michael Maguire erred on the side of caution.

"It's probably one of the best games I've been a part of, to be honest," Haas said.

"I remember in 2022 when we first had it and when Kotoni scored the winning try and the stadium was rumbling, so it's honestly an honour to be a part of and I just can't wait to be there."

Haas, who was unstoppable against North Queensland, said last year's loss "wasn't ideal".

"That was last year," he said.

In a warning for the Dolphins, Haas added he was just warming into his best work after an off-season ankle operation.

"I had a pretty disruptive pre-season. I had surgery at the start of the year and that probably knocked me back a bit with my fitness," he said.

"I'm building myself up again."

Broncos five-eighth Ben Hunt will play in his first Dolphins derby after returning to the club he last played for in 2017.

The Dolphins investigated signing Hunt but the 34-year-old said he was only ever going to come home.

"It wasn't overly serious. They showed a little bit of interest but in the end, I just wanted to come back here," he said.

"Pretty much it was about (my love for the Broncos). With everything they have given me early in my career, it was hard to not come back.

"It is going to be another massive game ... the Battle of Brisbane and they will come ready to play. It will be a tough battle, so I'm looking forward to it."

I'll have no complaints if Shibs is kept over Mariner...I didn't think I would ever be saying that. If Mariner keeps his spot, I'll also be over the moon but I can definitely see that the strengths Gehamat brings is what we have sorely missed since Herbie left - pretty dependable defender and good tough carries out of yardage. I think Mariner is also better defensively than he gets credit for but does not bring quite the same metres out of yardage being a smaller body. Mariner does bring freakish x-factor and tries though that Shibs does not. Its a nice headache to have.

Then I'd keep Mariner over Arthurs on that wing.

Stats wise their pretty much the same to start the season.
Shiba does have a try and Mariner doesn't.
THe metres Mariner makes have been through half breaks where Shibasakis are probably more the yardage ones we need

It’s a testament to Madge’s coaching ability. He’s taken a journeyman bum on minimum wage and turned him into a guy who can run 180m a game and is rock solid in defence. Any side in the comp would be happy with having a centre who performed like Shiba did against the cows.

Herbie is one that got away, there's no other way to spin it.

His yardage and the number of tries he scored for us with individual efforts, no copium needed. If we had it over, we keep him. I don't know how but we do.

It's a tough one... I think Cobbo and Staggs were signed up / extended by at least 2021, and by that point Herbie was jumping between wing positions I think?? (I think he spent a time coming off the bench as well??)

Whereas Cobbo was earmarked as future fullback and Staggs was our guaranteed starting strike centre.

I think it was 2022 when Herbie became our starting left centre??

And even then it may not have been until 2023 when the meter eating workhorse that he is now showed itself.

Looking at his run meters they went from 145m/135m in 2021 and 2022, up to 165m per game in 2023.

I've always loved Herbie, but it could be suggested that he was a little bit of a late bloomer... I think he extended for 12 months in 2022, but Staggs amd Cobbo still had 3 years left on their deals and were clearly starters in the outside backs.

In 2023 it basically became a call of trying to squeeze Herbie into the cap or going with Mariner at a cheaper deal.

In hindsight it was probably the 4yr deals to Cobbo and Staggs that cost us Herbie.

At the time they probably looked like no brainers to sign them up that long, but long deals remove roster flexibility.

I think R&R has been better by going shorter length deals... imagine if guys like Baker, Gos, Hunt, etc. were originally signed to 3yr deals (which is a pretty stock standard length), all 3 would still be OK the books next year whereas right now they could all be let go by the end of the year

One of my (not so) bold predictions in the preseason was that Haas would thrive under Madge and go to another level - more so than any other player.

The other guy I think we will really see benefit is Staggs. Kev seemed to have tried to keep Staggs parked in the garage until we got to good ball, but we never really had much good ball - most of our tires where from 40ms out.

I predict Madge will significantly increase Staggs’ work rate and we will not only see him rip in more in our own half, increasing his total runs, but by doing so will see him impose himself more on games - rather than drifting in and out of games.

I really feel, if he stays healthy, this season is going to see Haas and Staggs lead the charge.

Love your optimism matey. For me, Staggs needs to improve his lateral defence (and stop sprinting out of the line leaving his winger posted too!) and increase his metres out of our own end. He does that and our forwards have more steam to carry us into the final third of the field where he can then go to work on his devastating power game.

Our fuckin centre!!!
