Suspended Round 3 - Titans vs Broncos

Confirmed in the Daily Telegraph that Lodge, Glenn, Croft, Oates & Kahu are all 100% fit and will be available for Round 3.

Lodge has a specialist appointment in two weeks and still has to get the all clear. They are hopeful he will be available but it's not a guarantee.

Some more confirmation on the Broncos site this morning regarding injury progress -

Oates, Croft, Glenn & Kahu - 100% fit
Lodge - Will be there for R3
Fifita - Will miss at least R3-R5

So.. do we think this is our best side once everyone is fit and not suspended? (Not including Bird)

1. Isaako
2. Oates
3. Boyd
4. Staggs
5. Arthars
6. Milford
7. Croft
8. Lodge
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Fifita
12. Glenn (c)
13. Carrigan

14. <Utility> (Not McCullough)
15. Pangai Jr
16. Ofahengaue
17. Flegler

The only changes I would make personally is Pangai Jr starting on the right edge with Lexy on the bench & Carrigan co-captain, but I don't think any of those things are likely for 2020.

Flegler missed training today after developing flu like symptoms.

was tested for COVID-19 and returned a negative result

he is still mildly symptomatic and will remain home until gaining a medical clearence

It's that time of year I'm afraid. We'll see plenty more little scares like this before the season is done.

So for Round 3 are we probably looking at something like the below at this stage?

1. Isaako
2. Oates
3. Staggs
4. Boyd
5. Arthars
6. Milford
7. Croft
8. Lodge
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Glenn
12. Hopoate
13. Carrigan

14. McCullough
15. Flegler
16. Ofahengaue
17. Farnworth

I’d start Ofa over Lodge considering the injury return. I do prefer Flegler on the bench, but he’s shown he can definitely be a starter, too.
Yeah I could see the Starter/Bench order changing somewhat, but I'm thinking that this looks like roughly the 17 guys we'll line up with.

This is how the team lined up at training today, would expect that to be our starting line-up for R3 with Fifita out, TPJ suspended and Lodge still working his way back.

I really like that backline and while the forward pack is a little understrength, those front rowers + lock, wow!

If the side ever gets to full strength, I think there will be a few other forward packs who will quite literally and understandably be scared.

Any club being intimidated by a Broncos side honestly feels like a lifetime ago.

It does. But seriously, imagine facing the first wave of Flegler, Haas, Fifita and Carrigan only for them to replaced by TPJ, Joffa and Lodge.

Yep, I don't think it's overstating it to say it's the best Pack in the competition. The backline is another story, and the spine still has question marks, but hopefully Staggs can keep overachieving like he has been and Isaako finds his feet at Fullback before too long. With those things resolved, we have a serious footy side.

I wouldn't say Staggs needs to keep overachieving, that is him at his ceiling, it's super high.

Post-Boyd and assuming Glenn also retires and Milf leaves, I reckon the side will look something like:

1. Isaako
2. Farnworth
3. Staggs
4. Arthars
5. Coates
6. Dearden
7. Croft (c)
8. Flegler
9. Turpin
10. Haas
11. Fifita
12. TPJ
13. Carrigan (c)

14. Bird
15. Lodge
16. Ofahenguie
17. Oates

If that time comes on, wow look out competition. Of course, it is unlikely they will all stay together but if the Broncs can offload Bird, Boyd retires and Milf isn't re-signed or not re-signed on anything over 600k, it could well happen.

I think you've misunderstood me. I meant as a Centre he's statistically overachieving in his output and performances, not that he's overachieving in his own abilities. He looks a great player and he's in quite a purple patch, but nobody stays in a purple patch forever.

If Boyd, McCullough, Bird and Milford were all off our books, not only could we retain that side pretty comfortably, we probably have the funds to go to market for a strong spine player (possibly a Fullback - Ponga etc).

You're probably talking in excess of $2.5 million worth of salary cap in those 4 guys alone.
