OFFICIAL Te Maire Martin Signs Three Year Deal with the Warriors

Ben Ikin:

“There was certainly a plan for a period to keep Te Maire at the Broncos next season. Then the Reece Walsh option was made available to us. On balance, with that opportunity to sign Walsh, we looked at both guys. With Reece having been in our Broncos Academy and the longevity we believe he has in front of him, it was one or the other.”
“Yes, there’s a tinge of disappointment to see Te Maire moving on, but that’s rugby league. More than anything, we have this overwhelming sense of pride for what he has been able to achieve in this second phase of his career."
“After his brain bleed in 2019, Te Maire wasn’t sure if he would ever play again. We got the opportunity to have him come to the Broncos and to think we have played some small part in his journey back to rugby league, makes everyone in the organisation enormously proud. He isn’t a career fullback, but he adapted to the position so quickly and gave the team exactly what it was chasing: a wise head, and someone who could bring other talented players around him into the contest. We were searching for some calmness around Adam Reynolds, and Te Maire helped provide it.”

Warriors football boss Craig Hodges:

“Te Maire has been outstanding for the Broncos. He has brought some maturity to their spine and with Te Maire, he is one of those players where things happen around him. When he has the ball, spaces open up and line breaks happen. He has a knack of putting his support players in space, he plays with time, he is never rushed or panicked. He is a genuine footy player."
“He was out of the game for a few years but he knows what winning looks like — he played in a grand final for the Cowboys in 2017. The deal is done, we’ve had it registered with the NRL, so we think Te Maire will be a good fit for us.”

Bummer that it was a choice between Walsh and TMM and not between Walsh and one or two other players who I won’t name

I honestly don't think it was ever a choice we had to make.

Once the Warriors became interested, it was always going to be next to impossible to keep TMM. not only because of the go home factor, but with Walsh and CHT leaving the club at season's end there were two starting spots available in their spine for TMM to fill. and let's face it, he is too good to play back up (which is realistically all we could guarantee him)

Shame we couldn't have magicked him into a utility/hooker like all those other halves. Our premiership winning team would be complete.

I reckon TMM would've stayed if Broncos didn't low ball him.

I've heard we offered him 350k.

That's a pretty reasonable figure considering his circumstances. We have to remember he was out of the game for good two years ago because of a brain bleed and he was only 55 games into his career. That's going to affect market value when coming back.

He's been good, but he's still got a fair bit to work on. He isn't worth big money yet.

Turns out Te Maire wasn't looking to repatriate. Bad news for the pigs:

“Obviously I wanted to stay. They gave me the opportunity to put my foot back in the door in first grade. The plan was to stay, but things happen and they did well to get Reece Walsh. If you put yourself in the club’s shoes, it’s a business and he’s a gun player who will fit in really well to this Broncos squad. They picked him up for a good price so they’ve done really well.
“There’s so much young talent coming through the club so the future is very bright for the Broncos. There’s no hard feelings whatsoever. The Broncos gave me the opportunity to play first grade again which helped me get a three-year contract with the Warriors. That’s a lot better than what I was doing last year – nothing. I’m really thankful to the club and ‘Kevvie’ for putting me in the team.”
“The All Blacks and Chiefs were my teams. I’ve always watched the Warriors but never followed them. I hope everything goes well next year. I get to move home again and things are looking up for them. It’s going to be good, I’m excited for it. I can get into my pig hunting and fishing again. If things are good off-field you seem to go well on the field."
“This year has exceeded my expectations, that’s for sure. I just wanted to play a whole season of Q-Cup and see how the head went but I got the call-up early to go into first grade. I’m enjoying the time I get in first grade, especially for a club like the Broncos.”

Walters:

“He’s not going anywhere just yet, he’s with us for the next period. We’ve been good for T and T’s been good for us. It’s been a good relationship and we want to develop it in the next few weeks. He’s playing an important role in the team and one he does really well. Part of us bringing him in was to help Adam with the organisation of the team, not only in attack but also defensively. He did a really good job in that regard and has some nice skills he brings to the team. He has surprised everyone with where he’s at given the injury he had a few years back and then he went into the wilderness for a couple of years."
“The opportunity came up for us to get him here and we jumped at it. We weren’t sure how it was going to work out, but knowing the type of player he was, if he could get somewhere near there he would be a great asset for us.”

Reynolds:

“He is smart and an extra set of eyes for myself. We talk a fair bit on the field about trying to break teams down and what they’re doing. He is a calming influence. He is an integral part of the team."

Definitely should’ve done all we could to hold onto him.

It sucks to lose TMM, but realistically he wouldn't have been in first grade next year. Walsh and Mam need to play together as much as they can with Reynolds before he hangs them up to prepare for the next decade.

Exactly. I think everyone would have loved to have kept him but he is far too good to be a depth option. He may well have jumped Ezra or Reece next year if either has a down period, and this is definitely possible for Ezra as it will be his second year, but what if that doesn't happen? The Broncs have done the right thing by him and he has taken a deal to secure his future. It is a good result all round. And of course while no one wants to mention it, what happens if he gets another bleed?

I'm not sold on Walsh, we need that stabalising calmness and direction provided by TMM at the back, something both Tesi and Walsh don't seem to offer.

what happens if he gets another bleed?

His doctors told him he is as likely to get another brain bleed as any other person .
So very unlikely . Also consider whether an insurance company would agree to cover him to play in the NRL if he was vulnerable ?

Yeah I'm bit the same, but it will be interesting to see how Walsh goes with Reynolds.

Walsh coming here knows he doesnt have to be the man, unlike what he's doing at warriors, so it will be interesting to see how he slots into the backline movements.

A part of good backline movements is knowing exactly where your next outside man is so you can fire it along without thinking... I think one of the commentators commented on Tesi against roosters about balls going to ground and he needs to be aware of that and get himself up to where Reynolds is passing it.

It could be that Reynolds feels comfortable with TMM because he's always in the right spot... If Walsh can do that as well, then it could mean we have a more explosive fullback than TMM which wont be a bad thing.

The big thing for Walsh though is defence and organising our defensive line.

If he can do that on top of what we know he can do with ball in hand then he could look a completely different player in a functioning team with one of the best managing halfbacks leading them around.

I'm just surprised how he managed to go to fullback and play there like he has been there all his career, the moment we signed Walsh there was no room for him here but Warriors probably isn't the best choice either, they lack in the halves and in fullback, even signing CNK I think he would be the better fullback(he can't even make Canberra's 17) but in the Halves he would probably be the 7, though his kicking game hasn't really been tested.

Surprised Dolphins didn't go hard for him, their spine looks worse then useless atm, or atleast Newcastle who need a half or someone who can go to fullback to allow Ponga to make the switch.
