Te'o to start against old club as injury woes hit Broncos

Ben Te'o will play second row against his former club Wests Tigers in his first starting game of the year as the Broncos grapple with a mounting injury toll.

Te'o trained in the No.11 jersey on Tuesday and will take the place of skipper Alex Glenn who is out of action for up to eight weeks with an MCL after a cannonball tackle by Bulldog Reimis Smith on Saturday night.

The Broncos have other injury concerns. Matt Lodge (knee) and Kotoni Staggs (hamstring) did not train, with both injuries understood to be more serious than first thought. Hooker Jake Turpin has not recovered from a knee injury and also won’t be available for the trip to Leichhardt Oval on Friday night.

Star back-rower David Fifita (knee) is also a week away from playing at least.

Adding to Brisbane’s woes are a knee injury to centre Herbie Farnworth who did not train with the main squad on Tuesday. The English-born flyer will need to pass a fitness test on Thursday with Richie Kennar on standby.

Winger Xavier Coates, who is expected to play against the Tigers, also trained with his thigh strapped.

Teo, who has played five games off the bench this year for Brisbane, will start in the NRL for the first time since he tasted premiership success with Souths in 2014. His elevation against the club he made his first-grade debut for in 2007 is timely.

"He's going back to Leichhardt where he used to play so I think he is pretty excited about that," prop Payne Haas said.

"You can tell that he has been everywhere and he is pretty legit. He has succeeded highly in union and league. I've learned off him and been a sponge off him so it has been pretty good having him around."

Utility Cory Paix said the presence of Te’o in the starting line-up, with the experienced Glenn and Lodge out, was a boost.

"Definitely a lot of leadership,” Paix said when asked what Te’o would bring to the table.

"He stood up the most when he first came to the club and helped us young boys with a lot of information about the game and how it helps you go about your business.

"He will come into the side and do a job there. He is a great player.

“Ben is a big body and very aggressive, so as a nine I will look to use him on the short edges. He is very threatening there in the back-row so I'm sure most halves wouldn't want to tackle him."

Paix, who played in the halves for most of his career, has been thrown in the deep end after Turpin's injury and the release of Andrew McCullough to Newcastle, but the 20-year-old is relishing the challenge after a baptism of fire on debut in the 59-0 loss to the Roosters.

"I like the physicality of playing in the middle, so it's a good test for me and being part of one of the greatest clubs in history and playing alongside some of these players at the club is a dream come true," Paix said.

"I planned on playing the whole year in the Queensland Cup, but my goal was to play NRL and I achieved that this year, probably not in the circumstances I wanted to with the result against the Roosters.

"But it was a good test for me. I got to face the premiers and see where I was at physically and I thought I handled myself really well considering the result." Having Issac Luke to teach him the nuances of a new position has been of assistance to Paix.

"He is telling me to back my ability with what I have to offer with my speed out of nine," he said.

"He is a smart guy. Macca was great for me as well, but he has moved on. The experience those guys have, I take it on board and I want to play my own game.

" You want to be in the game as a halfback, but we use the term 'being in the washing machine' and you want to test yourself there at hooker.

"I have played all my life in the halves, but I'm loving hooker at the moment."

It's as I wrote before this piece came out. Guys like Haas, TPJ and Carrigan will love what BT brings. Obviously Paix likes it too.

I am glad to see Teo and Oates in the second row... It would've been extremely tempting to push TPJ back into the second row until Fifita returns, but I think we desperately need TPJ in the middle and I think Teo will help with defence given his experience.

The concern will be that I don't believe Oates has played 80mins at back row yet (65 mins in round 5 and 65 last week)... and I doubt Teo can last 80 mins either, the maximum he's played this year is 30mins. Oates seems closer to playing 80, but if he doesn't then it likely means we will need to sub both second rowers in this game.

Likely TPJ will move from the middle to the edge for his 2nd or 3rd stint and Hoppa will come on for the final 15-20 mins of the game. That may be telling in the grand scheme... we could also be 20 points behind at that point as well though.

I was hoping Oates may get moved to the left side, because with Glenn out there is 6-8 weeks for Oates to settle into the role of left backrower... and I'm also hell bent on seeing Fifita back on the right edge... but it sounds like Teo will line up on the left based on quotes from training today.

It could be considered that Teo being outside Milf may be the first legitimate weapon he's had available to him this year, so if Milf is unable to utilise Teo and get him into 1v1 situations with the opposition half then I don't know what else he can want.

im excited for what Teo could do for Milfs defence. I guess it’s dependent on where his fitness is at though. Neither of our starting 2nd row have played 80 minutes in that position this season.

Haas said in an interview earlier today something about the Broncos being the best club in the world, and now Paix is saying something similar.

This is what I want to hear. If our boys can remember how great this club was and more importantly, believe it still is the best club in the world, success will follow. That I am sure of.

Not even close mate

A man can dream, and anyway, I thought he was quite impressive on Saturday, and, he hasn't really had much of a chance to show what he can do as hooker yet.

I thought Paix was okay too. As was Luke. Maybe not the quite the standard of the God of Men, but perfectly serviceable.

Like the Demon Dodger, I felt Paix was super energetic, keen and enjoyed himself out there. Great signs, especially for a dummy half with minimal experience. First class defence. Great signs for our future hooker bench rotation once Luke retires

He has great hands, something I couldn’t say about Macca.

yeh i concur.....imagine Grant 5 years from now...

He kinda represents the type of signing we used to make; previously we used to basically produce just about everything we needed, and make the occasional signings like Darren Smith.

Grant to me would be a Smith like signing

And can explain why we have lost the aura of the place too; you had to be something special for us to even approach you to sign from outside the club. Thtas why going to the Broncos form down South was such a big deal..

I want that back...

If you want that back you will need to ensure the Storm, Cowboys and the Titans (to a lesser extent) all fold. The reason is that the genuine superstar talents are few and far between and whereas 30 years ago the Broncos were the only Qld based side, that talent is now shared around a lot more.

The only way the Broncos will get anything close to that aura back is by winning games and playing regularly in the GF. For that to happen we need to improve our administration regime, our recruiting and retention structures and our player management by a considerable margin.
