The next Queensland team

All this discussion about Sydney and Brisbane and the number of teams got me thinking about our options here in SEQ. I would support having another team here in Brisbane. I would never change my allegiance to the Broncs, they are my team. That said I favour the introduction of a new team based on the North Side but taking players from wherever.

Our state is represented at each end unlike NSW which is Sydney centric. I doubt Rockhampton is suitable but with Brisbane growing so quickly and the economy in good shape (it has been solid for many years) we could easily sustain an alternative to the Broncs. We had the Crushers who were built on dishonesty and subterfuge and were destined to fail. A clean and honest organization could not miss here. I don't see any real negative aside from money for the players being a bit harder to get but as Melbourne have proven, there is plenty available and it's only the NRL who have stopped a lot more cash flowing into the game. The moneys there.

The benefits
: home town rivalry
: greater strength when dealing with the scum admin from NSW
: less impact on the Broncs at selection time
: a game every weekend in town( Suncorp/Lang Park as the venue)
: huge sellout crowds when the local derby occurs
: more proof that the home of Rugby League is here in Brisbane

There would be plenty of people who would like to support a new team and we really could do with an alternative here in Brisbane.

I have long held concerns about any 2nd club in Brisbane being the poorer cousin, or ugly sister. Part of the strength of the Broncos is the monopoly it has on the market, so I would personally prefer to see a 2nd Brisbane area team being Redcliffe or Ipswich.

Dunno, I would hate to not see 40,000 crowds anymore because we had to split the public's available money across two clubs.

Let's not go nuts. If Sydney had only 2 teams for the ENTIRE city, we'd sell out a local derby too. I fail to see how that would be proof that Brisbane is the home of League.[/quote:2z6cu9w2]

Rocky kinda has a point here..

On the topic i want to see a Sunshine Coast team next. It is a city on its own and is only going to get bigger.

i dont think there should be another Brisbane team.

Spot on look at the crowds for the finals games between the eels v dogs last year.

I vote for either an Ipswich or Sunny Coast team. Both are going to boom population-wise. Ipswich would probably have more people as the Government seem to move everyone to the west.

Sunny coast ftw. We have enough fan bases who have no teeth without Ipswich coming into the frame.

I agree.
+... er, Not a second Brisbane team, no way but there needs to be another Queensland team, as draggx has said IMO sunshine coast is the way to go. They are their own city and it shouldn't(just like GC hasn't) affect our crowds.

Queensland is a very strong rugby league market which the NRL needs to capitalise on but they need to do it right.

I'm not so sure the region can support 3 SUCCESSFUL teams (by successful I mean average crowds equal to or better than the current crowds the Broncos and Titans get, plus memberships, sponsorship etc etc).

It simply has to be remembered that SE Qld has competition from Aussie Rules (2 teams from next year) and Rugby Union (Reds are resurgent).

In reality that means there's already 5 elite regional sports teams in SE QLD. While there are people who enjoy league, union and AFL, few would fork out money to support more than one team.

The problem in NSW is saturation of the market. They have 10 NRL clubs from Newcastle to Wollongong to Penrith, they have the Waratards, and they have the Swans and soon the GWS team as well in AFL. That's 13 elite teams in an area that's about the equivalent of Coolangatta to Noosa to Ipswich. And look at how badly some of the NRL teams are doing by comparison.

Sydney/Newcastle should be reducing their teams to at most 7 (including Central Coast Bears if they get in), and league should be looking to break into a new market such as Perth or Darwin.

As I said earlier in the thread, you could look at a team at the Sunshine Coast or even Central Queensland, but even then I'm not convinced they would be viable.

There's more than enough people to support another team in Brisbane. It is that simple. Of the Sydney teams at least half are viable. Considering that the non-viable ones are diluting the ones that are it is clear evidence that Sydney(its population) can easily accommodate multiple teams. Brisbane has one for more than a million. Please don't argue it could not be supported. The evidence says otherwise.

Quite unbelievably Rocky wrote something intelligent when he said, Sydney would ,if it only had two teams for an entire city, sell out a local derby.Could'nt agree more !!..well we have only one for a million plus !! Two Brisbane teams would fill Suncorp twice more per year not forgetting the pulling power when we face the Titans and Cows which would also occur twice when the new team played them. It'd be bloody sensational to have another Brisbane team.

Neither Ipswich nor the Sunshine Coast are viable and I cannot see how it can be argued that they can support a team when a city Brisbanes size cannot !!! Brisbane is big now and it too is growing , almost at the same rate as those areas mentioned. It is also false to claim that it would dilute or weaken the Broncos fan base as that did not occur (although predicted) when the Crushers were alive.

I would love to have another club from Brisbane to cheer for instead of my normal second choice, the Danny Nutley Team of the NRL, the Sharks.

I don't want to see any more new teams simply because the player talent would be spread out even more, and the competition would suffer as the result. We already have too many teams. Get rid of some before adding new ones.

Mate, the playing talent in the Brisbane region is already spread 13 ways. Broncos, Titans + all other teams except Warriors, Newcastle and Cowboys!
