A PENRITH millionaire, a warning to David Gallop and a Broncos dispute over a $70,000 legal bill helped deliver Greg Inglis to a Souths club on the cusp of premiership glory. The Courier-Mail can outline the confluence of forces that drove Inglis to Souths, ending a four-year mystery over the specific reasons for reneging on his Broncos deal.
As Inglis and the Rabbitohs prepare to end the club’s 43-year title drought in Sunday’s NRL grand final against the Bulldogs, it can be revealed:
■ Former Penrith first-grader Lew Zivanovic, now a construction tycoon, secretly brokered Inglis’ defection to Souths;
■ A 200-game Broncos legend sensationally slammed former coach Ivan Henjak as “moody”, turning off the Test star;
■ Inglis was five hours away from signing for AFL club Essendon in 2010, telling former NRL boss Gallop to register his Souths deal or he would quit; and
■ His move to the Broncos finally collapsed when Brisbane baulked at Inglis’ outstanding legal debts stemming from a matter during his time at former club Melbourne.
This is quite depressing really.
Rest of the story is here

I have to wonder whether he should have been allowed to sign with Souths ...

the story says that GI rang Gallop threatening to walk out of rugby league unless his contract with Souths was registered ... a short time later GIs manager is contacted saying the contract was registered.

So, reading between the lines, it says to me that Gallop and the NRL registered a contract for GI that they didn't believe complied with salary cap rules for fear of losing GI. and that is wrong and unfair on the remainder of the teams (especially on the heels of the Storm rorts). or am i reading more into it than there is?

July 12: Cullen announces he's leaving

August 10: Broncos sign Inglis

October 11: Paul White becomes CEO

November 6: Broncos pull deal

November 12: Signs with Souths

Seems to me the club was well and truly asleep at the wheel at the time, I bet Cullen didn't give a toss since he screwed up Bellamy's signature only two years earlier. He cops most of the blame because everything that's happened during Bennett's departure could've been so much different.

No I agree completely. His whole deal stunk at the time. And he seriously wanted the Broncos to pay out his legal bills? Sounds to me like he never got out of the Storm "what else can I get for free" mindset. This whole saga was supposedly sparked because he was getting cold feet about coming to the Broncos, but the "moody" coach was just as responsible for the backflip as the rain-fearing airlines.

My favourite part:

“Greg is a highly intelligent bloke and he just didn’t feel they (the Broncos) wanted him. They might have wanted him as a player but not as a bloke. He was going through personal problems and needed some support."

Highly intelligent? The moron got brainwashed by Mundane and an ex reserve grader.

With a player of his talent, maybe we should have.

He held the NRL to ransom by the looks of it.

Still would've been good to see him in a Broncos jersey though wouldn't it ?

Imagine him running off a perfect Hoffman cutout pass

...in other news reported by the Courier Mail today, Rugby League heralds a new era of "6 tackles" only for each team.

fucking old news

Imagine Josh Hoffman throwing any pass

Who cares anymore, seriously.

The broncos fucked up his deal, we know. This kind of shit was pretty run in the mill for that period of time in Red Hill.

Inglis clearly held the NRL to ransom and of course the NRL bent over and spread for him. What a gutless joke of an administration they are.

Between this and the storm cheating, Inglis is painted as a pretty slimy fucker.

Wouldve been interesting to see how post Lockyer looked with him in our colours though.

Yeah not me.

Inglis is turning into a bit of a villain in my eyes.

yessir.

Maybe it's just me but I was disappointed also hearing that Tuqiri was expecting the Broncos in 2014 to offer him a deal better then the basic one offered. He chased the dollars going to rugby but on the same token the Broncos owe Tuqiri nothing.

At least they bent over for a Queenslander. Normally they only do it for NSW.

And frankly, I'm glad they did. Game would be better if Folau were still in it and would suck more without GI.

**** yeah ....70K extra for a player like Greg Inglis? Uhmmm yeah.....how would you like that Greg, in cash or EFT?

Would have repaid that 10 fold by now....

Maybe we refused to pay the 70k legal bill because we just didn't have the room in the cap to make it happen.

and does anyone think the NRL would have bent over and taken it if it had have been us, instead of the Rabbitohs, that were trying to get GI, even though we didn't have the available space under the cap

It was because the legal bills were for a domestic assault charge. . Big black stain in a tumultuous time for the club. Was just a thing they weren't prepared to gamble on with no real leader at the club

Remember he was acquitted mate.

Indeed, he stopped his missus self harming.

The Broncos stuffed up, but the NRL should not have registered the contract.
