NEWS The secret clause Darius Boyd must trigger to extend his Broncos contract

Bottom line is, irrespective of Boyd & Gillet being rep players, offering 4 year big money contract extensions when they were nearing 30 years doesn’t bode with me. Perhaps, I am not the one who made those decisions hence I don’t understand the thought process. However, if I were one, I wouldn’t offer those long contracts. I would offer a 2 year extensions only & completely rule out player option garbage.

As a Bronco loyal, I don’t want/like Boyd playing on for 2 more years.
Mmm, might look for a different word there ol mate. Bode doesn't mean what you think methinks!

I'd say there's something going on behind the scenes but the Broncos don't want anyone to know. That's why there's so many fluff articles backing him , and him being positive.

Ah yes, but is he in fact privy to someone who is privy to the Broncos players contracts??

Anything is possible. But i doubt anyone senior enough at the Broncos who would know would be spilling their secrets to Peter Badel.

Wouldnt surprise me to see Boyd call it quits after our final game of the year and finish up with very little fuss. While he deserves the analysis and criticism for his performances, i dont think he deserves some of the crap he cops both in social media and in the media. I find it fairly disgusting some of the things that have been said about a decent bloke who has been a good player and servant to us. He deserves a bit more respect and he still has a lot to offer the Broncos even after he calls it quits as a player.

If Boyd is truly loyal to the Broncos, then Boyd should call it quits after this year. For the good of the team, there are no vacant spots in our best 17 left for him once everyone is fit and healthy.

It's in Brisbane's best interest to make it as amiacable and gracious as possible.

He’s extending for another 4 years

Yeah agreed, some of the things said from so-called plastic fans are deplorable.

Don’t hate the player, if you want to hate, then hate the organisation for giving 30 plus year old players these deal in the first place. It’s not like there were a que of clubs lining up to sign him on big long term money.

While that view has its merits as far as cap management goes, the player still has to own their performances. Boyd’s been shifted out of his position both this and last season, so he should’ve been aware that his Teflon was starting to wear thin.

While he’s in a new position at 5/8th, I go back to the only thing I’ve wanted out of Boyd for the last two seasons, which is him trying as best he can for 80 mins. He has done that at times, but not consistently so considering his age/experience, being the captain, and yes his paycheque, criticism is warranted.

People can go overboard, but we’re all emotionally invested, and he’s made it a bit worse by saying things like ‘it’s just a game’, which sets people off.

Yep media and social media is disgusting ,
And it only seems to be getting worse .
Yeah I think he might slip out the back door so to speak, but imo he deserves better.

Yeah, that’s my point, why the organisation gave a 30 plus year old (good player at best) that sort of contract is mind boggling.

I also agree that he has to own his performance and whilst we’re all invested in the club, some of the comments on here have been disgraceful.

Disgraceful efforts call for disgraceful comments.

I am curious where the club got that figure from. Was there a lot of competition for Boyd’s signature last time he re-signed ?

Quotes from White

Broncos boss Paul White said Boyd's unselfishness on and off the field has helped put the club in position to push for another title, following a grand final loss in 2015 and preliminary finals exit this year.

"Darius has shown plenty of leadership off the field in being able to support Wayne and myself by not pushing his contract so we could sign the other players and it's no secret our captain is probably the last one to sign a deal," White said.

"We gave Darius the best deal possible but there's no doubt if he put himself into the open market he probably could've done a bit better."

that bolded bit is true ... no one could have predicted his decline would be as rapid as it was.

When he signed the contract he was the QLD and Australian fullback,

I think it’s the length of the contract that has many fans confused and pissed. Hadn’t he already announced his retirement from rep footy by that time. You don’t retire from rep footy when your still at the peak of your game, therefore offering a 30 year old 4 years is just poor management

Not if his form didn't drop like it did

The it's just a game got under my skin originally as well, but I have come around to the Boyd/Wolfie view about that. They are absolutely correct, in the ultimate wash up, it is just a game.

All the serious shit that people go through (pedestrians hit today in George Street after a driver suffered a medical condition), people suffering from mental health issues feeling bereft of hope and support such that they suicide, family members dying in front of your eyes from cancer, or just giving up, those things put form in a football game and the outcome of a football game into perspective.

In Boyd's case I am almost sure it is both a defensive mechanism and a coping mechanism in light of his mental health issues.

Triple M this morning - 'word is Boyd is going to call it quits this year' *Marto applauding loudly*
