Third NRL Club In South-East QLD On The Cards

surely if SEQ can accommodate 2 AFL teams and 2 soccer teams, they should be able to have 3 rugby league teams (this is rugby league heartland!!). But I do agree that the game has alot more pressing issues to deal with rather than expansion.

Hasn't accommodated 2 AFL and 2 soccer teams yet. The AFL mob won't start until 2011, and the soccer team later this year, right?

Remains to be seen if either will cope.

the owner of the Gold Coast soccer team reckons that the AFL team on the coast (entering 2011) will be broke by 2014 because the area can't sustain that amount of teams

This is a terrible idea. Most of the people moving into the Ipswich/Logan area are from Victoria, not traditional league supporters and unlikely to embrace a team there. The player base, the fan base, the corporate dollar in SEQ all add up to a third team being unsustainable. If they really want another team in Qld - they should go Central Qld (Rocky/Mackay area).

And that depends on the recovery of the resources sector in Queensland after this economic issue passes.

I think in terms of a growth area that will have (in time) corporate as well as residential sustainability (players, fans), we're looking Sunshine Coast.

It's developing at a rate of knots, but I still think it'd be 5-10 years away at least from being ready.

Seriously why are we even talking about expansion when half the Sydney clubs are on the verge of insolvency?

Yep as will all the Qld clubs be if they try to put more teams here in such a small marketplace.

Probably because the NRL are wanting to grow the game into an area that has an apetite for it, their biggest problem is they don't have the peaches to solve the Sydney problem with a model similar to that you and others have outlined B4.

I would prefer the league to be expanding into new areas if it is at all viable, rather than in league heartland.

That's fine, if new areas are establishing grassroots prior to having a top flight team plonked there.

Melbourne STILL doesn't produce any local talent.

Melbourne are crap. That's my argument right there.

Melbourne IS crap...as in the city, and its population.

Not one in Mackay, they are a little two thick up here, and all they will do is bitch about how scary something new is.

Can't believe no one has mention Manly being the team for the Sunshine Coast region. I have heard numerous stories about them moving to the SC, simply because of the poor pokie laws in the NSW, which is costing a lot of RL clubs revenue. As far as I am aware, Manly have no junior side except in the Qld cup, which is the Sunshine Eagles.

I am suprised no one thought of that, am I missing something?

I think most of us are of the opinion that relocations don't work.

I thought originally the new qld team was going north of brissy
