RANT This might be our year

I know I'm not the only one here who's been stuck in the mindset of us being in perpetual recovery/rebuild. That our premiership winning team is still some way in the future.

I admit I've been fixated on our inadequacies around dummy half since pretty much forever, while others of you have fixated on other positions - second row, fullback, etc. We just need something more from Riki, from Staggs, Haas to offload, Mam to mature, etc etc. Maybe we need a ruthless coach, rather than a good bloke.

In my head, I have us treading water until Mozer clicks into the spine. But I'm starting to think by that time we might be weaker in other areas, most obviously halfback.

Next year we should have at least one more genuine hooker, but if that's Mozer he'll still be finding his feet. Reynolds won't be any younger, and he'll be doing well to be see out the season at the top of his game. Which we'll need to win a premiership. Although we have ample stocks to replace Herbie and Flegler, it's hard to foresee their loss strengthening us. Not in the short term. Mariner might turn out to be an upgrade on Farnworth, but we haven't seen evidence of that yet. And Cobbo is still a wildcard.

So, I'm tossing this thought into the air: what if, despite our obvious shortcomings and the question-mark over our coach, this is as good as we're likely to get in the immediate future? What if 2023 is our year? Is that even possible?

What do you think?

Barring injuries, we're one of the best teams in the league on paper.
Our front row + bench is pretty much untouched.
Our backs are all in conversation for origin selection.
Our hooking is our weakest position and it's not a traffic stop like it use to be in Turpin/Macca

Something has changed in the way we play/defend. Until 2025, I think we're genuine contenders.

If we lose to the tigers, I'll update my answer to NO

One game at a time - that's what I think, and that's how I hope the coaching staff and players are treating it.

Our next game is always the biggest game of the season, regardless of who it's against, or where it is played.

Dude, bit late to the party! This is obviously our year! There is no way we aren't winning the comp in 2023! Every player we have is elite! Including the coach!

Yeah it’s the best our squad will look for 3 or 4 seasons. It’s definitely a mini “premiership window” even though I don’t think we are a strong chance of premiership.

Reynolds retiring will time perfectly with our young players requiring massive upgrades, and others moving on. If we keep the right players we will be a force for some years to come but this is the best we’ll be for a while.

Agreed mate, your thread did it first and better.
Big difference, unfortunately. There's a little bit of pessimism/realism in this.

Unlike @Santa I'm not saying we're going to win. Only that this might be our best chance for some time. Tell me why I'm wrong.

I don't think we're going as well as a lot of people think we are. Some worrying signs the past few weeks, but I'm not going to deathride them just yet.

We do have a shot this year. A tough one, but it's possible. I'll take that after the past few years tbh.

Yes, I'd like to see us put 53 points on the Raiders before getting too cocky about our attack.

I think this year might be our year more then next year could be, Unless we can find a suitable Flegler replacement as I said before, forwards who can fold lines are what it's all about these days.

Still early days though, see how we react to injuries and the Origin period.

You don't win Premierships with bad luck on injuries, If we lose Walsh or Reyno for a long period I think it's over till next season.

Yes, I think staying injury free, regardless of squad, is your best chance of a premiership. Without Walsh or Reynolds our chances of progressing through the finals plummet massively. Like they did without Lockyer.

In fairness, it seems the Tigers could be injury free and still never be in with a shot even if everyone else was on their second team.

Hmm. Might reconvene on that thought in a couple of days - after we've run them through.
