OFFICIAL Tom Dearden lost to Cowboys

The Cowboys have offered Tommy Dearden a paltry three-year deal worth a mere $1 million sealed with a dubious promise to be mentored by some guy named Jonathon Thurston. According to Dobbo, that works out to be cool $1 million dollars a year, maybe more if you count it in potatoes, but you might want to double check his maths.

Thurston's single premiership pales beside Dearden's current brains trust of Langer & Walters who've each won more premierships than Dobbo can count.

Greedy Cowboys football-operations baron Michael Luck said:

“Now that we’ve got Chad, we haven’t ruled out Tom at all. We would still love to have him here and we believe they could work well together as a halves pairing. He is still coming through and learning the ropes and we think Tom can do a wonderful apprenticeship riding shotgun with Chad and then potentially take over from him and be a long-term playmaker at our club."

“It would be great news if Tom accepts our offer. Tom has shown some things we like, so we would love for him to be here. Tom grew up in Mackay, he was part of our junior academy five or six years ago and then he went to Palm Beach Currumbin (on the Gold Coast) to finish school."

Cowboys looking for a young playmaker

“He has done a great job coming through the ranks during a trying period for the Broncos as a club. I know it’s a big decision from Tom so we will give him time and space. We know he is a wonderfully loyal kid, he has come through the system at the Broncos and if he leaves it’s a big decision for him, so we’re not putting any deadlines on him.”

Let's hear it for Townsville!

Meanwhile local legend Kevin Walters is having none of it:

“Tom is part of our system so at this stage we are not looking outside the circle. We don’t anticipate losing Tom. He has been a good player for us in our systems and he’s still learning the game but we see little bits of improvement in Tom each week and we expect that again tomorrow night from him… no problems there with Tommy."

"We have been through everything with Tommy, he has a nice clear picture in his head about his job in the side and we are confident he can do that job for us (on Friday night) and moving forward as well.”

“If you wear a seven jumper these days you are linked to the Broncos, so that part of it… we are a big club, we are a strong club. It’s great to know other players want to come and play at the Broncos, that’s what it is all about. For us, we have our structures around what we will be doing and won’t be going outside those structures.”

“Adam Reynolds is a good player and there is some interest in him, but we need to tie up Kotoni Staggs first and if and when we do that, we will look at our other scrumbase options."

Mitchell Moses, another rumoured player of interest said:

“I‘d love to stay at the Eels, that’s my main thing, I’ve made that clear to them but that’s up them now if they want to keep me or if my management will sort it all out. When a contract is ready to go my management will let me know.”

“The ultimate goal is to get a premiership. But everyone is different Everyone is in a different situation and different ages, all those types of things. The premiership pact gets tossed around every now and then but nothing in depth. The way footy is at the moment everyone looks after themselves and that‘s how it is.”

Two sentences only.... okay, let's move on.
Kevvie “Obviously we are disappointed but we have clear priorities on who we are targeting to strengthen our roster going forward."

Clear priorities on who we are targetting... in conjunction with not offering Dearden a contract. To me that says we are looking for an experienced halfback i.e. Reynolds, SJ or Moses.

Reynolds absolutely must be the no. 1 priority

Yeah but is anyone going to take Flegler at full price??

I think Lodge is actually needed now. Our middles at the moment and moving into next year are:

- Payne Haas (starter and obvious number 1 forward, but he's not an enforcer)

- Matt Lodge (solid starter and possible forward leader... if he adapts to the current game then he'll be worth every cent (see panthers game). If he doesn't adapt then we will be paying half his wage to play somewhere else anyway)

- Pat Carrigan (very solid bench option moving forward. We need to resolve the lock spot, because he shouldn't be playing 60mins a game!!)

- TPJ (will likely play 2nd row moving forward and is off contract end of next year)

- John Asiata (I think he should be our lock... if we can re-sign him for reasonable $350-$400k then I'd call it good value)

- Tom Flegler (does not look like good value at the moment, but is anyone going to take his full freight. Think he needs a full year in ISC and probably drop some kg's)

- Rhys Kennedy (cheap depth option, but coaches seem reluctant to give him any sort of minutes)

- Ethan Bullemor (looks a good prospect and probably fills the bench spot better than Flegler at the moment, but I'm not sure he is physical enough just yet to really hold the middle.. he looks great coming on against the tired defenders, but seems to get manhandled a little as he gets tired)
Would not resign Asiata. His neck is too risky. We don't need a player who needs to be careful.

Someone will buy Flegler. We need to flick him.

Cardigan is a conundrum. He's not the ball playing lock we want. But he's the kind of bloke we want in the club. Needs to work on his offload.

Lodge, Haas and TPJ we keep, but if we don't have halves sniffing around for an offload, they're wasted.

i think a lot of people are forgetting Drinkwater doesnt want to play fullback tho, he's said multiple times he likes 6 more

If Kev wanted him to stay
The $3million Dobbobux question right there. I think we now know he didn't, unless he could get him cheap. Hard to say whether dropping him early was the right choice. I thought it was, if the endgame was to give Croft and Milford their last chances first. On the other hand, if the aim was to find out whether Dearden was worth keeping in the long run, then yes, he should've been tried first with Croft back in the Cup.

The worry is there's an opening for Milford to return now. God fucking help us if that's on the cards for tomorrow.

If Kev wanted him to stay, the idiot should have played him ahead of Croft BEFORE the threat of the Cowboys became a problem.

His hands are all over this too. Moneys on that we get his 27 year old, never made it son.

Is this Kevvie though or are his hands tied by meddling management? IF it is Kevvie, man we aren't coming back up any time soon. If it is management, man we aren't coming back up any time soon.

Last line is exactly what I think is happening. His kid needs a job and NRL spot.

Three sentence statement which can only mean Kevvie is pissed.

Most get the obligatory thanks for your service...

Carrigan is a prop and forms a very solid rotation with Haas and Lodge. The only issue with him is being over played and shoe horned into the lock role when he should be in the prop role.

The club hasn't really given an indication as to why Asiata isn't playing at the moment... might be the neck and they're just giving him time to get used to it. If he can resolve it then I think he's a good option for us at lock. I thought he looked good in the role in round 1 before the injury occurred.

TPJ is also an option at lock, but I don't think he can handle 80mins. I think he also dropped some weight over the off season and doesn't seem to be dominating the middle in the same way he was last year... several times he's been buckled over and thrown a desperate offload whilst being driven backwards. Second row looks to be his spot moving forward.

The other option for lock is Bullemor... he looks very mobile and 1910 has indicated his footy smarts when on the field. I'm not sure he can provide the ball playing that we'd want, but perhaps he becomes a bit like the Cam Murray type lock. I wouldn't say Cam is a ball player, but he works everything towards quick play the balls, supporting through the middle and offloading. Bull is always in supporting through the middle and may only be missing the offload game, but he may develop one moving forward.

I'm still not sure what Kennedy has done wrong

Selecting players based on contract concerns is always a bad idea. You pick the side you think works best and let the cards land as they may. Anything less is disrespectful to the other 16 blokes playing. It's no coincidence we played better after dropping Milford.
Where we go from here though is a lot harder. Dearden isn't really setting the world on fire, Kelly is unfit and Milford is out of form. Asiata?

I get this, and I agree with it. But it's Croft. To me, the choice is simple. Dearden is young, has very little experience, and is still being developed. Has shown that with the right coaching, he could be a good player in the future.

Croft. Croft is useless.

I wonder if we're looking at B.Walter's for a dummy half role?

Yes it's been very disrespectful to the coach in almost every way. You would think he would have given him a heads up before getting this far.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Wally Lewis at lock.

Ah yes the future. So near, yet we never quite get there.

When you're being paid the money a footy player is, you play where you're told. He's done exactly nothing to have any form of entitlement in the game at the moment.
