Video referee

Correct me if I'm wrong, but News Ltd is no longer an owner of the NRL, right? But they still own the Broncos, at least in part? And there are stil many, many, old boys in Sydney that are still pissed off about the Super League war, and News Ltd because of it, and the Broncos had a big hand in it too? And these cranky old bastards are now involved in the IC and don't have any News Ltd people pulling their strings and watching over their shoulders, allowing any axes that they have to grind to be sharpened to a fine point?

It's not a conspiracy theory if it's true ;)

Think back to Slater in Origin 2004. Slater was in line with Locky's kicking foot. He was ruled onside.

That's how I thought the rule was too. As long as one of the runner's feet is in line or behind one of the kicker's.

But both of Coote's feet were in front of both of the kicker's. By quite a margin.

Yeah I didn't see it so can't comment on that case.

Under-pressure video referees to publicly explain decisions to millions of viewers | News.com.au

Refs to explain their rules to the fans

After a decision is reached, Nine viewers will then hear audio from the video refs revealing why the decision was made and which rules were employed.
Play will not be stopped, the video ref’s explanation running for between five to ten seconds.
If the system is successful over the final two rounds, the NRL will look to play the video ref's audio through the public address system at every NRL ground for fans attending games.

Good idea.

They already do this in the Queensland Cup and it's one of the best aspects of 9s coverage.

This also happens in other sports (rugby union, hockey) where they communicate the decision and reasoning back to the referee/umpires which the audience can hear.

what they need to do is, for example:

- ref says "check onside from kick, check obstruction, check grounding"
- a checklist of those things is now on side of picture on big screen/tv.
- video ref first goes to onside, looks at it 15 million times as is customary, uses on-screen (that is displayed on big screen too) visual markers to show his thinking (ie straight lines to work out onside/offside) and then if he deems it to be onside it gets a tick next to onside. if not, cross and no further looks are required.
- vid ref goes through each thing and ticks as applicable.

it would make the process much more transparent, we can see their reasoning, and we know exactly why they disallowed a try.

What about when the video ref picks up something the ref didn't ask for?

Yeah I like this...would have been interesting to hear their comments on the blatant offside last week :001_rolleyes:

"Check offside..."

"Yep, he's in front of the kicker, clearly on the tryline's side...onside...next..."

If Harragan and Raper got sacked due to referees performances last season, then surely Andersons head has to be on the chopping block this year because IMHO< the referees have been far worse.

In fact, I can't think of a professional sporting competition in the world that has worse officials
