Bennett to exit the Broncos

DECEMBER 02, 2018

Wayne Bennett’s tenure at the Brisbane Broncos is expected to come to an end later today.

It is understood the Broncos are finally ready to call time on Bennett’s relationship with the club, clearing the way for South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold to make an immediate move to Brisbane for the 2019 season.

Bennett, in turn, will be given a soft landing by the Rabbitohs, the club he has already agreed to coach from 2020. Bennett was given the choice to leave the Broncos of his own free will but opted to dig in his heels, insisting he wanted to serve the final year of his existing deal.

The Broncos were reluctant to sack the man who guided the club to six premierships. However, it is understood they are finally ready to pull the trigger and end an association which has been forged over more than two decades, involving two stints at the club.

The decision to act this afternoon comes as Bennett prepares to return to pre-season training with the Broncos tomorrow morning.

The clubs were trying to work it out for weeks, it all came down to Bennett, he told Souths he was going to accept the Broncos proposal and would be at Souths in 2019 (On 2 separate occasions), the Broncos were obviously trying to get rid of him for 2019, by offering to facilitate the move on multiple occasions.

It all came down to Bennett's ego, he couldn't let the board get the final say.

It was evidently made public that we wanted him gone on Friday morning when we were desperately trying to facilitate the swap with Seibold at the 11th hour, only for Bennett to defy everyone, call his own press conference and commit his allegiance to us, purely out of spite of us and/or Seibold, by the looks of it.

No one has come out of this looking good. There is a smell on all 4 parties. Bennett, Seibold, Rabbits, and Broncos.


Bennett was one of my biggest idols for the first 20 years of my life. But at the end of the day I’m a Bronco supporter. No matter what the real story is behind the scenes I want the club to be the winner. If the rift between Bennett and Broncos is as real as it seems. Sorry, Wayne. I want the best outcome possible for our club.

A very ungracious end for one of the clubs greats, but for the most part he brought it on himself. Now we wait and see what damage this will cause to our squad.
