Exclusive: Why Bennett Re-signed Now - Broncos

WHEN Wayne Bennett returned to the Broncos at the end of 2014 he said he was going to be at the club for the rest of his career.

"I'm not going to change my mind on that," he said today.

That became a reality when he agreed to terms with chief executive Paul White to a two-year coaching extension.

Bennett will now coach the Broncos until at least the end of the 2019 NRL season.

That provides massive stability for the Broncos as they try to retain and continue to improve one of the best playing rosters in the world.

And that was one of the main reasons Bennett and the Broncos decided to get the deal done now.

"I thought it was important we got it sorted and the club did too," said Bennett this morning.

"That way everyone knows where they are going.

"There are always players going on and coming off contract.

"So everybody knows what is going on now."

It is a big boost for the Broncos as they face the biggest match of the year, the Queensland derby against the North Queensland Cowboys tomorrow.

The club was selling standing room only tickets today for a crowd that will challenge the 50,000 mark.

The team is looking for a big improvement after going down to Penrith but Bennett said his side would need no motivation here.

"They would have been focussed anyway because they know the team they are playing is quality," he said.

"That loss doesn't hurt us if we play well tomorrow night and bounce back with a win."
