This is twiztid by the way.

How come when a coach comes out and says it everyone on here is all sweet great idea. But last year PHAC was going to make South players sign contracts to stay off the booze yet everyone said ahhh boys will be boys, it is all in a bonding thing, the players are human after all? It just doesn't make sense how one can be beat up so much much and one can be the best idea ever. How does that work [icon_shru ? Also waiting for a comment from some smart arse to why Souths players should drink to play better on the field this year.

I don't know... but perhaps it comes down to the fact that a lot has happened off-field since last year?

That or the Rabbitohs are pussies and pass out before they can get their pictures snapped. I dunno. [icon_wink

I don't recall that coming out from Souths last year. All I remember is them saying cheerleaders were lame and it's much more intimidating having a group of drummers on the sideline [icon_shru

Anyway, kudos to Souths if they have a similar policy. Maybe they should extend their policy to enforce their opposition to down a keg before kickoff!

HELLOOOOOOO!!!!

This is the only article I could find.

SOUTH Sydney may become the first rugby league team in history to ban alcohol under a controversial plan being flagged by club co-owner Peter Holmes a Court.

The millionaire businessman wants to offer Souths players more money to sign contracts that would prohibit them from consuming alcohol during the NRL season.

Holmes a Court revealed yesterday that he planned to approach the NRL and ask for salary cap concessions to offer players grog-free contracts.

"I think the fact that the premiers went alcohol-free for eight weeks should remind people of the benefits of professionalism,' Holmes a Court said.

"It would make sense if we went down that path and it is worth looking into."

During the past two seasons, the Rabbitohs have been plagued by a series of alcohol-related incidents - leading to the sacking of two promising players.

Souths junior Mick Moran had his contract terminated for disciplinary reasons late in the season, with alcohol believed to be a contributing factor.

This is the response from the media about our idea. Can't find original link to the comments.

RESURRECT Elliott Ness. Get in touch with The Untouchables. Prohibition is back.
Well at least at South Sydney.

The new philosophy is: "Stay off the drink. Stay out of the clink."

Instead, a double-decker bus will pick up Souths players after matches and transfer them to Arnold's, where they'll celebrate by asking the Fonz to kick the juke box to play the platters that matter while sipping ice cream sodas.

Prohibition was the worst social mistake America made.

Now, nearly a century later, Souths are trying to rewrite history by imposing the same unmanageable restrictions on alcohol.

There is much to be admired about Souths' plan in theory.

Alcohol is an addictive drug that has caused devastating headlines for various players, including some at Souths, and for the game overall.

It's the sport's biggest anti-social menace.

If alcohol consumption was eradicated, hopefully damaging incidents would decrease.

That's the theory.

Pragmatically, though, the concept seems to be unworkable.

How extensively would alcohol be banned? From players' homes? From social events involving the team?

What penalties would ensue for players who accepted the ban in exchange for incentive payments and still drank in out-of-the-way venues?

The ban would turn Souths' players into victims of the paparazzi or public looking for a chance to report them for having a beer.

It would prove a major distraction in a season Souths are hoping to re-invent themselves.

If the ban is to work the players have to decide this issue of acceptance, not have it forcefully imposed by management.

That would be unworkable.

Interesting. Wonder what Ray's views are of Fittler's plans?

Wouldn't surprise me if he's effusive with praise. He's a fat old hypocrit.

I mean i don't give two rats at the end of the day if it helps players stay out of trouble. It is just so annoying when the media just chop and change there approvals because of the person and club that said it.

Good. Lucky its only the panthers we face this week

Danger match though. They have been steadily improving and I honestly reckon the Roosters (minus Shill, Mason and Minichiello) will get done by the mountain men.

Glad to see them following through on this policy.

Even after 4 rounds, I was STILL not convinced about the Roosters but after having no trouble beating the Panthers, maybe the Roosters are the real deal.

They are certainly looking the goods, that's for sure.

Roosters played well but in all honesty what did they have to play against?
Panthers were absolutely pathetic.I feel for Petero. He doesn't look to be even enjoying his footy atm. [icon_frown
Money is not always the best option when changing teams Petero.Should have listened to Webcke and taken his advice

I can't blame him for leaving he sacrificed big money to stay with us once and he isn't dumb enough to do it again when it is his last big chance for a contract and he has a young family to look after.

No point in going into the Petero signing thing again .
Just think it is sad to see him (imo)not enjoying his footy at this stage of life.Nor do I think he is giving his all.

What Webcke said some time back was that if you feel you need to leave to grab for dollars then make sure you will get a club where you can at least see a GF at the end of it and not end your footy not enjoying it just for the sake of money.
