What Went Wrong: Gold Coast Titans

Sacking Bird would be one of the dumbest things for them he has been their best and most consistent player ever since he turned up there.

On the GC news last week, they said the rumour is, Bird has asked for a release.

Also being the best & most consistent player at the Titans isn't that difficult to achieve.

It's not something to put on your resume.

You attract scum with scum. Bird has to go. The POS should not be playing.

What the **** I didn't say he was perfect or question whether he was allowed to play or anything. It's a fact it would be stupid to sack your best player just because people in your area don't like him.

If you're not aware everyone is not going to agree with you about everything so if you come across people on a forum that disagree with you about something you just better get used to it or leave it for good.

@Bucking Beads; why does a conversation that has nothing to do with Origin need to be brought into this? If you think I'm just saying he is their best player because he is NSW you're wrong

Their best player is Nate Myles.

But they're gonna be fine now. They have a great fullback!

Just because he's one of their best players on the field, doesn't mean he's the best player to have around off the field.

You obviously don't understand why he isn't a good fit for the Gold Coast. It would be the same if the Titans signed Gallen. People would choose to not support a team who has that giant bag of dicks playing for them. They need to act the same way as the Broncos who have built a legacy by signing predominantly Queenslanders because that is who Queenslanders want to see play. The same way your Roosters want to see other clubs juniors and superstars on $150,000 a year.

It isn't about Origin but to some fans who aren't as into rugby league as we are, they will look at that Titans team list and go, "meh I don't know any of those players and I hate that Greg Bird prick", and they won't be attending games or buying merchandise and they will just cheer on whoever wins the premiership the previous year. Speaking of which, look at all these Rabbitohs fans now. They're everywhere.

Pete covered it very well with their recruitment. Even those who weren't complete failures aren't exactly players that you can get behind.

By far and away the best and most marketable player that has been come to the Gold Coast is Gary Abblett. It doesn't really surprise me that the Titans crowd numbers have been in the gutter since the Suns started.

What about Wally Lewis?

Loved the Bird hate earlier....great stuff!!

There's a lot of places you could put the blame why the Titans are a dismal failure.....most have been mentioned. I'd like to throw a few dodgy GC based businessmen white anting away in the background as well

but,

A club is built on success on the footy field ....Titans have never had it, really

Cartwright is the most common denominator in all of its failures.

What about Wally Lewis?

Wally was an asshole when he was a player. (maybe he still is)

Having Lewis as a player with the GC Seagulls didn't increase the fan base for long.

It actually started much earlier, the Titans as one stage had the dearest tickets in the NRL.

Certainly Searle being dodgy and Cartwright being a mediocre coach contributed.

However, I think poor branding was/is a huge part of the problem. They've lacked star power and identity, both of which are crucial in order to develop a solid fan base.

As alluded to above, Bird is a quality player, but you can't expect the public to gravitate to him, given his reputation and Origin allegiance. Myles may be more palatable to the Queensland market, but isn't exactly poster boy material.

Securing DCE would go a long way towards their long term prospects. Given recent poor publicity, I don't like their chances, but he could be a linchpin on and off the field for them.

I think the colours they chose suck as well. Too much blue.

Should have gone predominantly gold I think, could still have kept the blue and white for accents.

Would have differentiated them far better from a marketing perspective. Closest visually you would get would be the Tigers (or Raiders alternate this year). Wouldn't be hard to select a different but still visually striking hue.

The major issue for me (and I haven't been to Robina for about 4 years, so not sure if things have changed) is that the stadium is in the middle of nowhere. There is no pub over the road or entertainment precinct to enjoy before and after games. It's pretty much arrive there, watch the game, then go home. I'm not sure if it's changed, but it lacked that excitement or build up that you get at a Caxton St before and after a game. That is what get's fans passionate about their team.

This is how I thought they'd look back in October of last year.

Gold Coast Titans
1. William Zillman 2. Kevin Gordon 3. James Roberts 4. Maurice Blair 5. David Mead
6. Aidan Sezer 7. Albert Kelly
8. Luke Douglas 9. Matt Srama 10. Nate Myles (c) 11. Greg Bird (c) 12. Dave Taylor 13. Paul Carter
14. Matt White 15. Ryan James 16. Lachlan Burr 17. Daniel Mortimer

Now I'd expect to see them look like...

1. William Zillman 2. Anthony Don 3. Josh Hoffman 4. James Roberts 5. David Mead
6. Aidan Sezer 7. Daniel Mortimer
8. Luke Douglas 9. Kierran Moseley 10. Nate Myles (c) 11. Eddy Pettybourne 12. Matt Robinson 13. Ryan James
14. Ryan Simpkins 15. Matt White 16. Matt Srama 17. Lachlan Burr

They face off against Wests Tigers in Round 1 at Cbus. They got flogged in the same fixture last year, I wonder what the scoreline will be this year?

I think this answers the question of the thread. It's one of the reasons I applaud the NRL for not throwing the gates open for expansion. A new club needs to achieve immediate, on-field success pretty much right from the get go.

Everyone loves a winner. I think in the modern era a new club needs to make the finals for at least 4 of their first 5 years, if not a premiership. It gives fans a taste of the good times and will build a core group that will turn up no matter what. The Melbourne Storm is a classic example of a new club done right.
