When the Ball Hits the Ref

So at the Souths-Logan vs Easts Q-Cup match yesterday, Sths-Logan kicked on the last and the ball hit the ref (who actually had his back to the ball running into position). The ruling was that he packed a scrum giving Sths-Logan the feed, they therefore got another set of 6. This seems like a ridiculous decision to me - give them a tap with however many tackles they have left by all means (in this case it would still be the last), but for them to get an advantage like this because the ball hit the ref doesn't seem right. Why don't teams deliberately try and kick the ball into the ref on the last so they get another set of 6.

I thought it was play on, whoever got the ball.

Didn't that happen in a Broncos GF (1992/1993) & we got the ball back & scored.

Yeah I thought it would just be play on as well, but that's not what he ruled yesterday. So I thought maybe he ruled that Easts had touched it and knocked it on or something, but he set the scrum back where the magpies kicked it from - and there had been no tigers playes in the vicinity when he kicked it and the people sitting around us said that's the rule if it hits the ref.

Thinking about the time the ball hit the ref in the GF, I am sure he restarted the tackle count.

The rule has always been the same. Scrum with the kicking side to feed.

It has been done b4 where teams target the ref but its easier to just accidently run into him you get the same result.

Yea what Dexter said is right. A few years ago i remember melbourne kicking the ball and it hit the ref and melbourne got the scrum. Pretty stupid rule..

Stop trying to make excuses for Easts not winning a game! [icon_razz1

Easts aren't winning because Mick De Vere refuses to play for them! :P

Not at all - the game had well got away from us by then.

That's ok, I'm expecting Darren Smith to come out of retirement any day now for the tiggers.

Given the way he used to tackle anything that moved in an opposition jersey it must be killing him seeing the Tigers defense at the moment - pretty much every maggies try was straight through the middle and under the posts without a hand laid on them.

Did anyone see the game on the weekend (cant remember which one it was) where the ref and a player collided ? Looked like the ref put the shoulder in haha

yeah the player landed on his arse and the ref just kept running lol
