Who is to blame?

Like most of us I was more then disappointed with Sunday’s effort, yes I know that it was Lockyers first game back for a while and there was bound to be some complacency playing the second last team in the comp but should we have played so badly?

I am going to lay the blame (for the want of a better word) squarely on a few players in particular and only because I expected more and they were the major part of the reason we went so well at the beginning of the season.

Simms – Started the season as one of the buys of the season, hit hard and made plenty of ground with his strong running and showed good hands and passing game before the line creating opportunities out wide. Has really dropped off the pace and his rapid decline in form has been alarming. Must change his grip on the ball as he has too many lose carries resulting in easy turn over’s.

Thaiday – Was man of the match in many games early in the season but since his SoO selection has been notably quiet. Has he been worked out by the other teams or just got complacent? He is a forward leader now and needs more constancy.

Hammant – had a Webcke like start of the season, strong powerful runs into the fray, but has gone missing since his SoO call up? Is he already playing for the Dogs?

Boyd – Proved the critics wrong with a much improved performance and even led the NRL try scoring list but again seems to have gotten the SoO curse and hasn’t been seen since his selection. More is expected.

Players of concern

Marsh – Can be excused due to injury, but needs to get back on the paddock and put in a few decent performances as much was expected and so far very little delivered, he’s on notice.

Clinton – So far the Broncos dud of the year, not enough go forward, too many errors and lack of grunt in defence. Has a lot of ground to make up with fans before he proves to have been an astute buy. To me the jury is out, but due back really soon and it doesn’t look good.

Parker – Was a huge part of our team when the chips were down last year, but so far as failed to replicate his form of last year. Should be doing the kicking instead of cross-eye Ennis. A senior player now and more is expected.

Unless there is a major attitude change we will get towelled buy the Cowboys this week because they are looking at this game as the final they were supposed to have. Thurston is getting his confidence back and we are prime for the taking. To say it is a danger game, it is a game, if lost, will push us out of the 8 and we can kiss a top 4 spot goodbye (if we haven’t already). Last weeks 2 points may end up being a pivotal moment in our 2008 season. Personally I think our whole season is balanced on what happens next week and the players I mentioned above are the key.

Who is to blame for the Bulldogs game? The preparation for mine was the biggest key. Lets face it when the likes of Boyd and Hunt are at Singapore as late as Sunday instead of training obviously the preparation for the match was taken extremely lightly and the goal was just to ease the boys back ahead of the final stretch. While I don't agree with it I believe it proved to be a vital error in our teams loss.

Who needs to be put on notice? A whole stack of players to be honest. I'll dissect the team for you.

Boyd is not a centre and the faster Bennett learns of this the better. Stick him onto the wing where he does shine and bring Manihera into the centre's if need be. If not bring Moon in or heck throw the dice try out a U/20's player.

Lockyer and Wallace are the heart and soul of this team. Wallace needs to improve his defence as he was horrible against the Dogs IMO. Lockyer while showing moments of form is a little off the pace but hey at least he's trying.

Hannant needs to step up. He's the only pure prop we have that can drive the line backwards. Would also love to see an offload or two. Same can be said about Clinton but I generally doubt he has natural talent.

Thaiday needs to keep pushing the line backwards. Had a strong game on Sunday and I'd like to see more of it. Parker I thought was fair but he needs to improve his defence as he was caught napping. Carrolls days are numbered IMO, sadly he has to start as Eastwood can't tackle a dead s**t as we speak.

So if it was up to me? The Team for Round 19.

1. Hunt
2. Kemp
3. Manihera
4. Hodges
5. Boyd
6. Lockyer
7. Wallace
8. Hannant
9. Ennis
10. Clinton
11. Thaiday
12. Parker
13. Stagg

14. Carroll
15. Eastwood
16. Taylor
17. Sims/Kenny/Marsh whoever wins the lucky dip.

we just came off a bye with our 2 playmakers just coming back from multiple week injuries. im not worried one bit, and i expect to lose to the cowboys this week. however, we will win the gf. I Believe!

The problem is, as pennywise said we just came off a bye and we lost a game we were expected to win, so all of a sudden all these problems surface. I think we're reading way to much into it, lets wait and see what they do over the next few weeks - it may not click against the cowboys. I'm betting if a couple of plays were slightly more organised on the weekend we would have scored a few more tries and won the game and we may not even be having this discussion.

Boyd – Proved the critics wrong with a much improved performance and even led the NRL try scoring list but again seems to have gotten the SoO curse and hasn’t been seen since his selection. More is expected.

Interesting. He "proved the critics wrong" with a handful of good games and improved consistency. Does that mean his regression back to the Boyd of old proves the critics right?

so once we have a bad loss it is time to bash Boyd again. Wake up people it was bound to happen.. The Forwards are to blame because they haven't shown up to play for Months. Also the mindset wasn't there on Sunday from a few players which makes it hard to play well as a team.

Boyd has been very good this year and has actually offered us some spark in attack at times, but I have noticed the last two games he has played for the Broncos he has dissapeared. Manihera, Stagg, Kemp all get into the play the ball and do a dart out of dummy half- havn't really seen Boyd do this- whether this is the gameplan or he's not hungry for the ball I don't know.

We have an off day.. get over it. Start worrying when we lose a few more with all our stars.

Some people are so annoying, ffs, Just cause we lose doesn't mean there's anyone to blame ever heard of a fucking bad day? It happens.... sheesh!

imo boyd at center really neglects the tem to play footy only on one side of the fiel, that being hodges. we need a centre that is likely going to bust the line. what do you guys think?

Probably not such a dumb suggestion actually. With his lack of fitness he'd last longer out there. But I'd be shit scared of his defence out there. He'd have no idea.

Is anyone prepared to admit that we're missing Petero in a massive way?

He carried our pack last year and no one has even come close to matching his quality and consistency.

IMO, Boyd is a great finisher but no line-breaker in the centres. He belongs on the wing. I'd rather try Manihera or Hoffman in the centres.

And, as posted elsewhere, Stagg is not a back - he might do the occasional offload, but he too has no real ability to penetrate a tight defence.

Let's face it, until Hodges returns, we really have no strike power out wide, and I'll say it again, I'd rather lose with players like Hoffman, Moon, Emmett and even Robinson in the centres rather than Benny's obsession with the "safe" option.

At the same time, the other real issue is, imo, that the whole team needs to play with hunger and passion - and that means the forwards laying a strong foundation for the halves/hooker to be enterprising and creative, with a game plan that is built around support play and setting up a couple of wide running forwards (who won't drop the ball.)

Do that, and we have the players to beat any team.

Of course we're missing him. But he had to go eventually, and since he was digging his heels in for more money, and given our salary cap issues now that are seeing us offload players, can't really say it's a bad decision to let him go.

Not one, or even 2 players, will win you a game against the top sides at the business end of the season - with the exception of a true leader and organizer who brings the team together.

The WHOLE team needs to go out there and play for 80 minutes with real ATTITUDE.

Of course, an X-Factor player like Locky and Hodges helps ...

Yeah he did have to go eventually (and I don't want to drag up the whole debate again) but his performances haven't dropped and a prop forward with his workrate is so important to a team, especially ours currently.

I really want Clinton and Sims to step up and lead the pack but unfortunately I don't have a lot of faith in them at the moment.

I personally think they need to playa more expansive game .... there's too much one out stuff ... opposition sides don't really get tested in defence at the moment.

Having Locky and Wallace back will go a long way to rectifying that ... as long as the forwards get the hard yards first.

Fortunately, our leader is back, so I have faith.
