It's not fair! Broncos get preferential treatment

Re: Mundine wants the broncos to sign ferguson! Thoughts?

You know what guys? I used to have a lot of respect for the Broncos back through the 90s and coming up through the first part of the early 2000's. In fact, you used to be our allies against the fight against the Sydney teams. But you have morphed into the new Manly or Roosters and are now the new darlings of Channel 9 with all your unfair TV scheduling and unscrupulous recruitment strategies. You also get this massive Third Party Deal development from being a one city team in a city of over 1 million. Its almost criminal the benefits you get (yet sill missed the 8).

Get it into your melon dude. Channel Nine chooses the damn draw. We don't and not even the NRL does! They paid $1b and they want the highest rating team in the highest rating timeslot. Currently that's us, so we get Friday night games.

So deal with it. If it changes and it may unless our performance improves, maybe we should whinge like you lot?

Awwww. We're a one city team? Just like Melbourne, Canberra, Titans, Cowboys and Warriors...

We didn't use to be. We had the Crushers along side us. Unfortunately the preponderance of Sydney teams were more important than expanding the league. But you know what? If you actually stop and think for one second, we were doing FAR better premiership-wise when we WEREN'T a one team city...

So how is being a one team city such an advantage for us, exactly? We did better when we HAD some competition...

A professional club: With all the benefits you get? 13 home Friday night games with a full back up which no other team gets, a team city in a city of over a million people and still can't make the final 8 a comp with 20 teams? A team that buys the star players from less fortunate clubs because of their commercial clout using dubious tactics, encouraging them to say they're home sick or have "family problems"? Barba, Milford, Cherry-Evans and more. The embarrassment of the league, ladies and gentlemen: The Brisbane Broncos.

LOL the anger is strong with this one, enough to sign up to our forum just to post this. I'm pretty sure this guy can't afford cable so enjoy watching us every Friday this year buddy!

Re: Mundine wants the broncos to sign ferguson! Thoughts?

How would you feel in the reverse situation?

we've lost plenty of excellent young players in the past. it happens.

on topic, again why are we even giving the time of day to anything mundine says :D

would i want fergo? no thanks.

Re: Mundine wants the broncos to sign ferguson! Thoughts?

Mate, be fair, we got him down our way as a young teen and just as we hit pay dirt you dig him back. How would you feel in the reverse situation?

How would I feel if other clubs signed Greg Eastwood, Ben Hannant, Petero Civoniceva, Darius Boyd, Gerard Beale and so on? If Karmichael Hunt and Israel Folau left our club and sport and changed codes?

Upset, but I'd get over it because it's a PROFESSIONAL sport and I understand players come and go. Hopefully the next superstar is just around the corner, but as a fan of the club that Darren Lockyer retired from 2 years ago, I understand that isn't always possible.

If you guys were able to keep representative talent such as Dugan, Ferguson et al, you wouldn't be overly concerned about Milford and that shows your club has far bigger issues than losing one bright prospect who has played a handful of NRL games.

Losing talent sucks but it's the nature of the modern NRL and is becoming likely to be even more frequent given the talk of transfer windows ala EPL. If we continue down that path where nothing is fair and the richest get the best and no other consideration matters, we'll see players traded amongst clubs like stock and given your poor ability to handle the loss of ONE player, you'll never survive such an arrangement.

Maybe you need to take a breath or two and step back a bit?

We get most of the Friday night games, because the ratings are great when the Broncos are shown.

Haha at you having a go at our unscrupulous recruitment strategies, the Raiders went after & signed a coach who was contracted to another team.

Re: Mundine wants the broncos to sign ferguson! Thoughts?

Hey Chriss, Tell me a point I made which was incorrect? I love the game of Rugby League and can't stand the way the Brisbane Broncos are dictating the game and destroying my passion. A City of over a million with 1 teamand with constant Friday night games at disadvantage of most other teams. Its a disgrace. Defend it! How is it fair?

The game cant survive with out Brisbane on FNF its that simple. It creates more revenue/ratings then other game, so I'm sorry but if you club isn't a drawcard. That is not the broncos fault but you own. The NRL and Channel 9 run a business and it puts the teams that create more money more PR and more everything in it prime time slots. Get over it !!

Whining about something that Brisbane can't control..Hell, I'd prefer it too if we didn't have so many Friday night games..As a Gold Coast based Broncos fan..I cbf getting up there on a Friday night.

Raiders fans should worry about the incompetence of their own coaching staff and management instead of blaming others..then again maybe that's why they'll love Ricky, you can all blame the world together.

You don't live in Brissy? You can't possibly support the Broncs, it's illegal!! Don't ask me why it's illegal it just is ok!! It's a conspiracy to like the Broncs outside of Brisbane.

Sticky is the greatest coach in history and Milford is evil. Does that cover it?

Even as a fan so many games on Friday night really gives me the shits. There are plenty of other clubs who play entertaining footy (arguably more entertaining than us) who can pull great ratings and enough cash for 9 together their hands on.

Just proves money talks

You theory doesn't prove that money talks really.

This is a topic that has been done to death but I'm unsure if I've ever expressed my opinion on BHQ.

It sucks that the Broncos play a ton of Friday Night Games, for everyone except Channel 9.

However, that isn't how the outside sources see it. We've seen the likes of Toovey and co. bleat on about how we have this unfair advantage and some even go as far to say it's another shining example of the NRL bending over backwards to compensate for us.

Give me a break.

I don't know how many times a CEO of ours has to issue a public statement outlining their preference for Sunday football but clearly it doesn't matter because those same critics are just going to find another thing to piss and moan about the club.

To truly understand why the Broncos receive the lion share of Friday night games, you need to look at it from Channel 9's perspective.

Ever since the Titans were introduced, Channel 9 have operated with a dual Friday night time-slot which allows them to show the NSW match of the round and the Qld match of the round. Where as NSW has a total of 11 (technically 10 but if the Blues can pick ACT players for Origin they can suck it up here), Queensland only has three. Now, factor in the Cowboys preference to play on Saturday nights (which is a graveyard slot for most clubs) and the Titans being a rookie club/sucking for the last few years and it's clear to see why the Broncos are on Friday nights more often than not.

In the end, it's a stupid time-slot and I think the NRL needs to devise a better scheduling system to grow their viewerbase.

If reports are to be believed, they certainly have the motivation given that viewership dropped all across the board.

Ideally, I believe an average week of NRL footy would look like this...

Friday 7:30 - Game of the Round

Super Saturday
5:30pm
7:30pm
7:30pm

Sunday
2:00pm
2:00pm
4:00pm

Monday (personally not a fan, but don't hate it enough to get rid of it)
7:00pm

All games live across Channel 9 and Fox Sports.

You theory doesn't prove that money talks really.

9 paid a billion dollars for the right to be broadcast the game yet they control the draw and put their favorite teams on in their time slots and the NRL doesn't do a thing to tell them every club should get equal coverage.

I might've gone to far saying equal coverage I should've said enough coverage to make the fans without Foxtel happy. Some clubs have very little sponsorship and viewing numbers because they play in the ordinary time slots and have little coverage on 9.

As far as i know part of the billion dollar deal was that channel 9 owned 18 Broncos games. They choose which ones and when they are played for the privilege of forking out shitloads of dough.

End of story.
Whether i like Fridays or not i am happy to forgo Sundays for the cash that will put the game in a much healthier position.
Some of the teams that are whinging may not have survived if the Broncos don't play Friday nights
So suck it up princesses

9 paid a billion dollars for the right to be broadcast the game yet they control the draw and put their favorite teams on in their time slots and the NRL doesn't do a thing to tell them every club should get equal coverage.

exactly ... they paid a billion dollars for the rights, therefore they want to get their moneys worth, so they try to play the highest rating teams, to get the best value out of selling their ad revenue.

The Broncos are constantly the highest rating team in QLD, thus the reason they play one of the time slots most Friday nights.

we could effectively take the rights away from nine deciding who plays on the Friday night slots... but if we do that we potentially significantly lower how much they are willing to pay for the rights. and if that happens, we will get the same people who are whinging about the Broncos playing most Friday nights, start whinging about how the NRL didn't get top dollar for dollar for the broadcast rights.

and not getting top dollar for the rights means the ARLC not being able to significantly raise the club grant .... which then translates into the ARLC not being able to raise the salary cap, since most teams wouldn't be able to afford it and it seems we have to prop up poorly run broke teams.

so by allowing nine to have a say on scheduling allows us to have a cap over 6 million for next year.

every other teams fans should kiss our collective asses for making that happen :takdir:
