As i only watched rugby (didn't follow media) while Dave was with us, why did we let him go? If any club could have gotten the most out of him it was us. He would seriously have to be the most talented footballer around, if he had sbw's application he'd be one of the best 2rf ever. In saying that i haven't missed him at all since he left, he's far too unprofessional and inconsistent. After his end to this year though i suspect he will finally find that consistency.

He took pretty large money to leave the club from memory, and we decided to not get in a bidding war.

In hindsight; perfect decision.

Meninga tore him to shreds in an article a while back, the only person who can make him realise his potential is himself, and he has to do it for himself.

He should be the best player in the world right now...by far. But he's not even close coz he has no drive.

And some players just can't do that, they have the potential and talent but not the drive and his been to 3 clubs, two of them his shown he couldn't get the consistency necessary and it's not looking better at the Titans. There's only one person who can make him reach his potential, himself, will he? doubtful.

we dropped him to the QLD cup due to his performances, he then reportedly stopped negotiations with us until he got back into first grade, but before that happened he signed a pretty bug contract with Souths.

It has always appeared to be that he was afraid (or too lazy) to put in the hard yards... The man has talent, no doubt about it, just not the attitude

To me, it speaks volumes when one of the game's greatest players spends a fair portion of his book talking about a player like Dave Taylor. Lockyer could have spoken about a ton of players - Webcke, Thorn, Civo, Sailor, Hodgo etc. etc but I don't think any of them got the attention in that book like the coal train did.

It was interesting too because it sounded like he was on the right track in 2009 until he received a few hard truths from Henjak. Lockyer made a point later to discuss his opinion on Henjak and noted that he was extremely critical of younger talents, which makes me think he may have been thinking of Taylor who was only 21 when he left the club.

It's not as if people didn't expect Taylor to perform this way though. I remember a few posters on RLeague would constantly predict he'd flop in first grade because he was all skill and no substance which turned out to be true. It's a real shame and I can't help but think if he stayed up here and didn't go to Souths when they were the shits, he'd be a much player than he is now.

I wish him the best. Seeing him steamroll Soward in a broncos jersey is a memory that will stay with me. I think he had to be dropped and signed by another club to get that performance out of him.

Agreed that he could be one of the best players. But he isn't.

His last few games for the Titpants were starting to get really promising though, he was absolutely on fire.

Problem is he needs a reality check to perform like that. They dropped him to Q-Cup and he absolutely dominated. Just like he did with us. But he can't just keep getting dropped every couple of months just to spark him. I honestly don't know what the answer is.

That could be true, Pete. It's hard to tell as Henjack has never, and probably will never, comment on what occurred. I think Taylor played his best football under Henjack. Bennett, McGuire, Cartwright have never had Taylor playing as good as he was in 2009. At the back end of that season he was unstoppable - Ivan deserves some credit for that.

I don't think there is a satisfying answer, Morkel. Players with enormous potential will always find a spot somewhere. Unless they have a bad record of off the field behaviour there'll always be clubs who will take a punt on them. Particularly in Taylor's case. As others have said he could easily be better than SBW. He has speed, strength, footwork, ball skills - you name it. I just shake my head. How could someone so gifted not want to make the most of it?

Certainly, Henjak's decision to hire a PT for Taylor paid dividends. However, he got carried away and Taylor piss bolted.

My memory is fuzzy, but I remember the decision to drop him felt very premature.

He's an enigma .......

The reason is BECAUSE he has such prodigious natural talent. He's never had to work hard in his life, skating through with a huge amount of natural gifts.

Every coach he's had has alluded to it. The only gift he's missing is ticker...

Exactly. There are that many kids who just end up bigger and stronger then everyone else at a young age, like through high school rep teams etc., who absolutely steam role all the littler guys and everyone thinks they'll be the next big thing a future professional, but a couple of years down the track when everyone else catches up in size they don't have the work ethic and often skills to match it with everyone else and never end up making a go at it.

I've always seen Dave as one of the rare guys whose made it into a maroons jumper doing not much different to when he was running around in under 9's… IMO he got that far without a work ethic and it finally to caught up to him.

I am deeply disappointed in Taylor. Not because he left us, largely, but because his debut year was so good that you expected him to turn into one of the best front rowers in the game, if not the best.

He has some serious attitude problems. Not to the level of Ferguson or anything like that but still enough to influence his performance dramatically. He needs to learn to take criticism seriously, but not personally.
