Queensland Cricket has broken new ground by awarding full State playing contracts to Indigenous duo Brendan Doggett and Carly Fuller for the 2017-18 season.
Doggett, a 23-year-old right-arm fast bowler, and Fuller, a 17-year-old allrounder, become the first Indigenous players to receive full Queensland contracts since the contracting system was introduced.
Queensland has previously had Indigenous players, including Doggett, on rookie contracts while Fuller, who plays for the Gold Coast Dolphins, played in the inaugural Queensland Women’s team at the National Indigenous titles in Alice Springs last season.
Doggett, originally from Toowoomba, is one of three new additions to the my FootDr Queensland Bulls squad while Fuller, who hails from McKees Hill outside of Kyogle in northern NSW, is one of two newcomers to the Konica Minolta Queensland Fire contract list.
Doggett, who played for the Cricket Australia XI last season in the domestic One Day competition, was a member of the 2017 National Performance Squad based at the Bupa National Cricket Centre during the winter.
He and another newcomer to the Bulls list, batsman Sam Truloff, were members of the Western Suburbs District CC team that won the my FootDr Premier Cricket title last season. Doggett took 4-46 while Truloff made 113 in their grand final win over University of Queensland.
Truloff, 24, made his first-class debut from outside the Bulls squad last summer, playing five Shield games.
The other newcomer in the Bulls squad is Valley wicket-keeper/batsman Lachlan Pfeffer.
Pfeffer, 26, is a former Queensland youth representative who played for the Queensland Academy of Sport last season in the Toyota Futures League 2nd XI competition, scoring 99 in the match against the ACT that clinched the title for Queensland for the second year in a row.
A school teacher, Pfeffer began his cricketing career playing for Laidley in the Ipswich competition.
Queensland Talent Development and Pathways Manager Justin Sternes said the additions to the Bulls squad had earned their spots through a variety of opportunities.
“It’s pleasing to see players like Brendan get exposure through Indigenous, Premier Cricket and the National talent pathway system through the CA XI, just as it is to see Lachy Pfeffer and Sam Truloff come through the Queensland youth system from a regional background into Premier Cricket and then the Futures League, and in Sam’s case, first class cricket,’’ he said.
“We work hard at identifying talent at various stages of the pathway and giving them opportunities to go to the next level.”
Australian Under-19 player Harry Wood, another Laidley product, is a new inclusion on the Bulls rookie list with the Ipswich/Logan Hornets allrounder joining incumbents Max Bryant, Xavier Bartlett, Matthew Kuhnemann, Jack Prestwidge and Bryce Street in the rookie squad.
Among those not contracted this season were batsman Nathan Reardon and retired wicket-keeper Chris Hartley. While Brisbane Heat contracted player Lynn was not offered a Bulls contract, he will be considered for selection like any other player once he returns from the shoulder injury that currently has him sidelined until early next year
Australian batsman Usman Khawaja has been named Bulls captain for the season. Khawaja is one of three Cricket Australia contracted players for 2017-18 along with fast bowler Billy Stanlake and opening batsman Matthew Renshaw.
There are three CA contracted players, 19 State contracted players and six State rookie-contracted players in the 2017-18 Bulls squad.
Queensland will play a series of practice games over the next month as they prepare for the domestic One Day Cup competition in October.

Lynn no longer a Bull.

They've said he'll be available for selection for the Bulls once he's returned from his injury this season.. So what exactly does him not getting a contract do if he can still play for us?

Lachie Pfeffer! @Bucking Beads - remember him?

He will only be on match payments if he gets a game rather than a constant weekly wage.

No contract, he can still be picked from club cricket but they're not paying him a wage and he has no ties to QC. Truloff wasn't contracted last year and played five games.

He could leave the Bulls if he wanted to and play for another state.

His arm is still in a sling, and he won't play till maybe towards the end of the BBL- He still has his Heat contract.

I played for Park Ridge and against his bro Joel etc. He was always around the place when we played at Beauy.

WHAT!! Same league I played in as a kid. Joel was in the grade under me at high school.

They will play. Khawaja opened today for Bulls.

Neser will be there. He was exceptional last year for Bulls. 3/20 in the Final was great bowling. 92 on the weekend too.

Bryant opened today for Bulls and hit 134 off 92 for Gold Coast. He’s a chance to open this summer.

Truloff 123 off 94 for Wests.

Cutting is only just back from Pakistan this week. Doubt he’d play next week.
