Half a report

That step... hope he has titanium plated ACLs [emoji33]

Interesting that this guy has a ‘defensive mindset’ after watching those highlights. Don’t know what to expect but I’m excite

How's his passing game and creativity in general? Highlights didn't really show that part.

Went and watched Dearden today against the Bears. His defence was solid and the Bears tested him out. They deliberately ran their forwards wider trying to make him tackle. Page was standing a good three metres wider than normal running at the three and two in area. Page was a good test for him.

Dearden was very good at putting his body there. Arthars tested him early too and had two tries down his side in the first 10 minutes. He was probably too enthusiastic at times and would come up and in too much. Pauga was all lost out there and Dearden should have stayed with him.

Attack, he got in at dummy half a lot, set up on the left but Scarlett did all the kicking, he forced a repeat set at the end but probably needed a more attacking kick with two minutes left and down by eight.

Didn't run the ball a lot but directed and pointed a lot at what he wanted.

Defence I wouldn't be too worried about, I think he's shown more aptitude in defence in the ISC than attack. Peter Hola tried to kill him against the Pride and he stood up and got in there. Didn't miss a tackle and Hola made 183m rampaging over everyone else.

My observations have all been around attack which is strange for a young half.

When he does kick he kicks well, just put in a beautiful kick tonight for touch. Kicked a 50m penalty goal two weeks ago.

Doesn't kick enough.

Scarlett 74 kicks
Dearden 16

Dearden watch tonight v Pride from Cairns.

Again set up exclusively on the left. He shovelled it on too much. He threw a pass for Burns' first try on the short side. Scarlett is still the boss with kicking and play- Gibbie goes the right with Scarlett and he's their biggest weapon.

20 to go he steps through with a left foot step but got to the fullback, guys unmarked and went himself- came up with 0.

I'd like to see Dearden mix it up and get on the open with Gibbie and get a partnership going. Might come with confidence.

In defence he made a bad mistake just before half time, they came left and he came up timidly then planted his feet shuffled side ways and took no one really Murphy rolled it on and they scored in the corner.

Would have been good to see Clifford v Dearden- U18 half v U20 half but not to be tonight. Would have given a good reference point for Dearden.

In summary I'd like to see him own Wynnum- if he can't shark Scarlett and demand good ball then how is he going to do it in the NRL off Origin players?

I don't think I could have nailed a debut preview too much more, that's all what I saw again tonight. Tough night but he showed all those qualities- tough in defence and just passive in attack- well hard night not to be passive really.

I noticed he came to a the other side a few times and more than a couple in got in to dummy half tonight- a trait I have noticed he has when he isn't getting any ball.

I feel he did all that can be expected of him considering.

Shows maturity beyond his years if hes going looking for work.

He did more than expected. He definitely wasn't passive. He was running in support. Taking the line on. He was even playing dummy half more than he should but our dummy half wasn't where he should be.

Should have said, I loved his chase on the Souths intercept that was a great effort. That and the dummy half efforts were two great pieces of effort play.

He touched the ball 34 times, most halves in a game would be 50.

It's not a slight on him, it's what I have observed over five games now and the numbers back it up. It's something for him to develop.

I'm guessing the low touches were a focus from the coaching staff to play everything through Milf, given it was Dearden's first game, but with Knik going do you envision a change in our halves play for a more traditional first and second receiver rather than the split halves??

I've noticed Milf coming to the right a bit more, but he does still line up on that blindside far too much for me given he's the number one man.

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on what Seibold is looking to implement or may look to implement going forward with these two seemingly being the long term halves or at least the halves for the next 2 years

Just out of curiosity, how many times did Milford touch the ball?

Its almost as if the team didn't trust Dearden. He barely touched it in the opening 5 minutes. As a halfback on debut, he should of got his hands on the ball straight away, but we just kept going left to Milford.

He kinda grew into the game which is normal for an 18yo on debut. Towards the end he was trying to take charge by barking orders, getting into dh, getting his hands on the ball multiple times in a set.

He wasn't amazing but he looked like he fit the part and will only get better.
