NEWS Brisbane fighting Warriors for David Fifita

Didn't Hodgo retire with a year remaining on his contract to help us keep the likes of Glenn & Kahu after the 2015 GF?

Now that's a real Broncos captain, someone who knows they're past their best, and their body is failing them, making the ultimate sacrifice. If Boyd retired this off-season, I'd nearly forgive him for the last 24 months of hell.

Is this another part of their master plan to make us over pay for our juniors or are they really wanting to sign him?

i'm pretty sure he was off contract for 2016 but retired instead of seeking a new contract.

it's also been said a few times on here that Boyd retiring may not help us that much as we have to carry his contract on our cap (unless the NRL make an exception for us ... fat fucking chance)

Never understood why a player retiring early becomes a salary cap problem. If I leave a job, I don’t get paid out for the next few years? It’s not like he’s going somewhere else...

Fifita along with Haas should be signed to Broncos for life. They’re the kind of players I want in my team for good. I reckon they’ve some personal competition between them as to who would perform better on the field every week and for mine- it will only help us succeed.
Want to add in Flegler but will hold on to that thought for now though.

its only recently that Fifita has had that left edge role locked down for 80 minutes.....that was Gilletts spot pre Origin after all...

So what im saying is; don't fall for the "what have you done for me lately" mindset...this guys a teenager, we must absolutely keep him BUT its not at absolutely any cost...

If he truly wants to stay id leverage that by giving him incentivized contracts, play another 6 Origins and that's worth a additional $400K or whatever...by the time such a clause is invoked we have moved on a few of our "problems" by then and we wont be caught out...

The other thing is; surely he can see this team is going no-where currently constructed...we need cap space to sort that out and give him the best opportunity to win a comp with us...

Or....just throw the kitchen sink at him......regardless we need to sign him...!

I'm not sure how it works after GI as the media haven't really said too much since it happened other than Rabbits have $1.5m to spend.

I believe GI retired and didn't not seek any money from the rest of the contract ie. He and the club mutually voided the contract

However souths then gave him a $300k job. I believe the $300k lives under the cap for them now.

In other circumstances players retire but want to be paid out in full... that's when you have to wear the salary under your cap.

If they retire but get a cushy job with the team their new salary lives under the cap.

That's how I think it works anyway.

I am not too concerned about parra or warriors approaches. As an 18 year old i think he would be looking long-term, and those teams will not make him a better player or provide likely premierships.

I am concerned if the storm come sniffing about. They are a successful club and have the systems in place to improve his game, which could be a greater influence to him.

well talks are opening soon with him and his agent so right now id say we are odds on to secure him...

Everyone knew he was good by his staggering trajectory since debuting. But what has really impressed me lately is how he stands in tackles, sometimes with 2 or 3 defenders, and keeps seasoned NRL players, blokes 10 years older than him, at bay with one arm like he’s still playing U18’s.

I was impressed last year, but he’s getting better as this season goes on.

A totally different player to Haas, but equally as scary and freakish.

The way he just steam rolled moose last week is the perfect example. That's the Qld & Australian lock and he absolutely toyed with him.

Depends, if they get him then they wanted to and if not they'll say it was all part of their plan.

It will be in his court. I think the club would have some money for him. It will not be 1m a year but it will close to TPJ level. I think he will stay. If he is anything like I think he is he will want to stay with the group and be part of this pack for the foreseeable future.

Sick of the media putting figures out for clubs. Their doing the work clun can't do which is tabling offers before players are allowed to be negotiated with. Its disgusting and our club consistently has speculation about our players while the media actually barracks for exemptions for Manly to keep the Turbos for life.
**** em.

Yep. Talk about other clubs fight to entice this one or that one whilst talk about us generally is about our fight to retain our own.

While the powers that be are discussing a trade window they need to firstly discuss and give concessions in the salary cap for developed players.

Particularly those young players who are debutants with the club whose system produced them.

A transfer fee of say 15 or 20% of the players contract to the developing club if they leave and the same percentage off the salary cap if the stay.

Roosters and Storm among others would shit themselves and entice them to develop their own and help shoulder some of the weight in keeping this great game of ours alive.

10 of the Roosters GF side last year made their debut at the Roosters. and 14 of the Storm So they'd welcome it.

We need to sign him for three years and backload the last one.

That practice has been largely stopped by the NRL after Manly and Dogs got into trouble.
If we lose Fifita because we went all in on Lodge and TPJ that is on the retention committee. Anyone could see if we had to make a call Fifita was the priority.
Mind you he isn't worth $1m per season. There are some crazy contracts being thrown around by desperate teams. I wouldn't want to be in Oates shoes right now unless he ahs already agreed to terms because I doubt we can drop 1/2 a mill on a winger with all the forwards up for renewal. Even Gillett would be shaky.

Is there another team which has more cap than us tied up in under performing/injured players .

Boyd
Bird
Gillett
Macca
Milf ( has been far better at fullback but at $1m per season is overpaid ).
