Ben Ikin: Sorry Darius, Maybe you need to Harden Up

That's a shit ass take. (Again, the second part)

Absolute dribble. He's very intelligent...
I never said he wasn't smart, i just don't like the guy, and think he coasted in his career for the most part.
He could have an IQ of 160 for all i care, i still think he is a doucy merkin.

Must have missed the smart stuff ikin has Said either that or it has blended in with all his bitch sessions on nrl 360.

What Ikin has said is completely fair game and true. I dont particularly care what happened in his family or the Bennett thing. Lets sum this up in simple terms:

4) Did the indigenous Australians have guns or ride motorbikes on the beach and post them on social media? - No

I don't care about his family either but he penned a different opinion on how others should accept media scrutiny to what he lives both privately and professionally.

I agree with most of the LM stuff but this guns and motorbike thing has been repeated a lot.
It was a cultural experience for them because they were together on the land.
It has nothing to do with what toys they took along

Agree with the first part but not the second.

Ikin was never a superstar, but he was better than good, he just had knees held together by masking tape. Certainly in his early career he was a sharp player, both in his movements and between the ears.

Certainly when he was playing, no player was under the same scrutiny as players are these days. But similarly, their pay packets were no where near as big either.
Ikin didn't post the dumb stuff he probably did when he was younger on social media simply because there was no social media in his day.

Sorry, but we need to be clear here. It's not like Latrell or JAC or Cleary etc were being harassed by the media or spied on in their private lives. It's not like the super zoomed in shot from inside Todd Greenberg's own home of him having a quiet beer the day he was sacked, which WAS a gross invasion of his privacy and absolutely was genuine media harassment.

These guys put this stuff up on social media. They literally make a conscious decision to make it available all by themselves to the public to see. If they wanted to avoid scrutiny and incursion into their private lives, there is literally nothing stopping them putting their social media on private and only making it available to the people they actually know and interact with, like the majority of average social media users do.

Both these guys have thousands and thousands of people following their social media pages and that is their choice. JAC in particular seems to revel in creating content and having a laugh on social media, which is his right to choose to do so. You can't go out of your way to build up a following online and enjoy the celebrity following that fosters, then complain when the pressure and scrutiny from that following comes back to bite you when you do something dumb and post it publicly for tens of thousands of people to see.

Really? When they use it as an excuse for breaking the same rules everyone else has? So you are telling me, shooting guns, riding motorbikes, breaking the law on multiple front and posting on social media is acceptable AND in line with their "culture"....sure mate, put the bong down.

Where do the media get the money from?

Corporate sponsorship and investment. Believe me, that pool of investment does not come directly up the tree from the footballs fans on the ground, its diluted out many many many times.

Mate that's hanging out, it's not a cultural experience.

Can I ask why you quoted me, as I’m a little confused.

Your post seems to echo an earlier post I made in this thread, but sort of suggests you’re disagreeing with me?

Of course, I could have it wrong, but am honestly confused.

Cool, then next time I want get in touch with my heritage I will don my viking hat , sail into a coastal town and rape and pillage.
Times change. Hunting and fishing and being with family In my view qualifies as cultural.
The rest if what they did is complete bullshit including using it as an excuse.
All 8m pointing out is the focus ppl have on the guns and bikes and saying it's not cultural when it has nothing to do with it, IMO

I doubt there's anyone alive today whose ancestors didn't hunt and fish and spend time with family lol
Is that not part of a culture then?
My point was fairly simple, I think I have made it.
Not sure this is the place to discuss what is or isn't cultural which is where this is going.

But your reasoning makes no sense. You claim that by spending time with family makes it cultural, even though nothing the did was cultural. When Aboriginal people or any other indigenous group talk about cultural events they mean doing things that have cultural relevance. Things like hunting with spears, corroboree's and eating traditional foods. Not fucking around with rifle's and dirt bikes.

You could look at it this way: if it was a bunch of white blokes, would it be considered cultural or would it simply be a case of drunk bogans camping, shooting stuff and pretending they’re Crusty Demons?

It makes perfect sense if you can manage to look beyond the toys they took.

I'm happy to accept they were there for cultural benefits. I'm not happy to accept they thought that was a good enough reason to break the guidelines we were supposed to be sticking to and certainly not happy about them trying to bullshit there way out of trouble by playing the race card.

No it doesn't.

Actually, I think just getting on your land is pretty much the pinnacle of culture for indigenous people. So if it's his ancestral land they're on (I'm not sure if it is) that is definitely cultural.
I'll agree though, it is taking the piss a bit when everyone else in the country is on lockdown.
Unfortunately, it potentially put the NRL in a compromising position at a very difficult and important time. In that regard it was selfish, but we all make mistakes. He hasn't assaulted anyone, driven a car drunk, or anything like that, so I think they should swallow their medicine and move on.
Where do the fines go? I'd love to at least see them go to a Charity of some sort.

Where they least want them to go - rugby union, they need life support.
