NEWS Walters: roster is pretty much sorted

I think the truth lies somewhere in between. There definitely are some stinky contracts at the club and that hinders the cap but I also think it’s worked out conveniently in a way because as you said, there’s barely any decent players around to sign anyway.

again 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000% disagree ...

there is no point throwing big money at numpties, which is all we would be doing if we made mass signings for the 2021 season. that is one of the ways your cap BECOMES a shitshow.

we made a couple of calculated signings that won't break the bank and are setting ourselves up to be ready to strike should a quality player (in a position we need filled) suddenly becomes available. worst case, we are in a very good position to make signings for 2022, which is a far superior free agency. making mass numpty signings for 2021 will hinder our ability to be serious players in the better 2022 market.

but yep, the club and Kevie should definitely listen to the "fans", and make mass signings now fucking out cap for future seasons, ensuring our stay on the canvass is much longer than it should be.

f
Agreed in part...but...when these so called quality players become available i cant see them coming here

Round 1:
1. Isaako

9. Macca
10. Haas
11. Glenn
12. TPJ
13. Asiata

14. Turpin
15. Carrigan
16. Flegler
17. Oates

18. Riki

lessss go.
New to the site, but Broncos fan through and through all my life. Really interested to see how we bounce back this year and whilst it may be challenging I feel Kevvie could be the man for the job to bring a good attitude to the current playing group. Reading some of the comments on here, it is true we are over paying young guys, who are talented, but it wouldn't happen at Roosters or Storm. There is always two to three players waiting in the wings that can fill their positions. And never will the club bow down to a players demands. They just go okay, off you go see you later.

I do like the above TL for rd 1 with a slight change:
1 - 7 as is.
8. Carrigan/Lodge (Carrigan was one of our best last year, but ended up carting it up like a prop, didn't offer us much more in attack, Lodge needs to be fit, I understand he was injured, but for the new rules/speed of the game)
9. Macca/Turpin (I would say Turpin, with Macca on the pine to give him a spell and offer leadership)
10. Haas
11. Glen (I would start him here, but move Pangai to an edge through the game)
12. Ricki (Start developing him, he did really well last season back end, and formed a good combo with Dearden)
13. Asiata/Pangai (I feel Asiata signed to play 13, will offer us something more in attack).

14. Macca
15. Fleg
16. Pangai
17. Lodge

Personally I would start Pangai at 13 for the initial stint (20 say min), then bring Asiata on there and Glen off, pushing Pangai out wide. Or Start Asiata/Carrigan and do a similar thing but bringing Pangai onto an edge. Fleg and Lodge, rotate through the middle with Carrigan/Pangai - Haas. Our forwards can play extended min and still have good impact, whereas I feel Glen is past his best but brings experienced and can cover edge/middle/center if injury. Macca on the pine would bring experience, can cover middle if injury and gives turpin a spell so he isn't just defending all day.

After losing Fifita we need to develop Ricki/Bullemore, I like what I saw from Ricki back end, I don't think Oates is an edge we need, let him take his dream up as an edge forward at another club.

Lodge has been great 2018-19, but needs to be fit and healthy this season to compete for us, and the new speed of the game.

Welcome and good post.
Can’t argue with any of that really. I do think ideally it’s best for Riki’s development to start off the bench which is why I chose Oates to start. I think too many of our young players got thrown in the deep end with starting roles lately, and weren’t eased into first grade.

Here's a question, if our senior players hit their pre-seibold form and our young players learn to defend, how do you think we'll do?
The roster firing reliably is a top 6-8 team. We can make it home next year on 22 points looking at the draw. I would argue we have a more stable and better squad than Dragons, Tits, Cowboys, Tigers, Warriors, Sharks and Knights (depends on ponga injuries). Theres a few points that can be racked up there back end of the season. There will be a few upsets between those guys playing each other, which will bring the average comp points level down.

All Kevvie’s work has been around adding people that will add to the place on and off the field. He was very deliberate.

Still one spot left but Tigers want a player swap and Broncos can’t do that.

Tommy or Walters? Would take both, Tommy first.

Out of curiosity, why can’t we do that?

Because they'd probably want Dearden or Paix for Walters or something ridiculous like that.

Tigers are kidding themselves if they think Walters warrants a player swap. He's a depth playmaker that they're paying minimum salary to.

If the Broncos were in the same position I daresay we would release the player early to allow him to go to a more secure contract.

Appears to be a dick move by the tigers if anything

We’ll give them Gamble back.

I believe I am justified in feeling optimistic about 21 and beyond. There wasn't a single game last year where I didn't see a team that could match any other team for short periods.

In some games we even looked quite good in patches. It's these patches that convince me that we have the bones, the makings of a full time nrl team. Every team drifts in and out of games but wonderful teams like Melbourne stay 'in the moment' for much longer.

This roster is good enough to win more than they lose and I totally expect that will be the case this season.

Couldn't agree more. The team has absolutely lacked the ability to be consistent over eighty minutes for the last two years, but they have shown that they are capable of dominating. If Kevvie and his staff can build fitness, instil confidence, and improve concentration, I think there will be a massive improvement.

Couldn’t agree more. All they really need to do is learn to defend. I don’t even mean Melbourne Storm defend or 2015 Broncos defend. Just forget whatever Seibold taught them that lead to the head scratching defensive positioning of the outside backs and do the basics and we’ll make the middle of the table without improving any other facet.

If they go above that and learn to defend well, and find some attacking shapes, the top 8 isn’t out of reach.

Poorly worded, Broncos could but won’t. They don’t feel Walters’ salary needs a player compensation.

I can certainly understand Tigers’ position. Hard to find a utility for your 30 in January. I’d want my life made easier too not harder.
I’m happy for Billy to wait a year too. It would be good for culture but to really push the issue wouldn’t be anything less than favouritism. If they want to play hard ball, and more power to them, let them pay him while he returns from injury.

especially after we already released a player to join them
