Dearden has done nothing overly impressive at all, but they could be because of our utterly useless forward pack.
Staggs is great in attack but one of the worst defensive centres in the game and will be coming back from an ACL. Wouldn’t be throwing the cheque book at him but I’m sure we will sign a 4 year $3m deal for him and he will spend the next 2 years on the sidelines before we pay half his contract and send him to another club.

Win or lose made no real difference to me (although a win would have been good for their confidence), but how they played was vitally important.

Some good signs in the first half, but equally, far too many familiar 2020 signs in the second half.

I don’t want to cherry pick one player, but Isaako being terribly out of position, twice in a row for tries, was what really seemed to start the rot.

If we didn’t get the spoon last year by way of being absolutely terrible in second halves, it wouldn’t be so worrying. But you could replay that second half to just about anyone and they’d think it was from 2020.

It seems there is still lots of work to be done to avoid a repeat of 2020.

If I was to cherry pick 1 player it would have been Kennar.
I thought he had an absolute shocker, and butchered 2 tries.

Dearden sucks less and has potential. I bet he signed somewhere else, if that’s the case then I 100% back the decision, why develop him further.

Kevvie may think he just needs some time in reggies or something though as well.

Croft is pus though so it doesn't give me a lot of confidence for round 1.

I reckon this is more a case of Kevin Walters putting the players on notice that pre-season form and effort is the currency for selection and nobody has a devine right to a spot in first grade. IMO it’s a message to Dearden that he has to do more. Wayne Bennett used to do this sort of thing regularly.

I'll wait for a more reliable source personally, but I don't hate the idea. Croft is pretty ordinary but Dearden looked pretty down on confidence in that trial. A few weeks in qcup to regain his confidence could be a good thing. Especially after last season.

Maybe he'll let Croft take the early onslaught, and give Dearden a few things to work on in cup . Maybe even put him with walsh to get the combination going again.
