NRL Player Movements & Rumours

Not every player has his history of head knocks. After you suffer one at the severity he did the likelihood of career ending damage is far more severe.

Sure he could take his chances, wait until November 1 and try to dupe some club for a cool million or he can get it sorted now and stay at a club he clearly enjoys playing at.
And retain the ability to seek an upgrade from the Storm if they have cap space.

That is way below market value... storm salary cap shenanigans happening again I see

He isn’t a rep fullback and has only played 50 games. It’s probably a little bit below value but I don’t think too much. Two years ago not a soul knew his name and he was making no money and he’s now making 650k a year. That’s pretty big increase.

Not anymore risky than any other player, and just ask the Roosters what happens if a player retires from concussion.

Paps is a million dollar fullback all day. At the very least high 800s. 650 is plain as day a fucking rort. BS. I would bet his manager would have called clubs to gauge value and plenty of clubs would have said "around the million mark for sure mate".

He is at more risk because we know once you’re concussed the risk of more is greater.

Walsh hadn't played a game of qcup and was offered 500k. The market for fullbacks is hugely inflated. It's not a little under its huge unders. Multiple clubs would offer him a million a year.

Those multiple clubs couldn't offer a premiership could they? He was playing for the Falcons two years ago and is now earning 650k a year- that's a pretty decent pay rise.

Hynes has increased at the same rate and I think he's on par performance wise with Paps.

ultimately thats why Melbourne has the best culture, broncos used to sign players on significantly less to stay and be premiership contenders, but im afraid when you've have had our downfall you aren't getting players cheap.

The Storm have re-signed Paps on a 3 year extention worth $2 million (massive unders for him) now locked up until the end of 2025

also rumours Zac Lomax wants out of the Dragons. rumours started when he recently unfollowed the club on Instagram. he was one of the 2 that refused to sign the stat dec after the infamous BBQ
Shit I wish we had some cash to go after him. I rate him so high. He never shirks doing the 1 percenters. I’d love him in our backline and it’s about time the one way traffic of players ended.

Can they medically retire him if this proves true? Wage removed from books? I'm not fine print savvy. The cynical could think it's a huge money play on a soon to be medically retired player.

If Melbourne thought there was any real risk to Paps having a short career they wouldn't have let Hynes leave. They would have offered him 300k which is "a little under" for the "chance to win premierships" because I'm sure we all do our jobs for awards even if another employer is offering the same job for 300k more.

understand the hatred of Melbourne. but its a bit more then doing the same job at another employer for a extra 300k. Most of the guys playing are living out childhood dreams being a pro footy player and a lot of them wouldn't call it work. idk some people are inclined differently and would be happy as Larry with 900k at the bulldogs winning 1 out of every 3 maybe next year, paps obviously loves winning

He'd have to get another knock and be assessed as can't play again then you can apply for medical retirement.

He wouldn't even need another knock I guess, if today he woke up and couldn't play again he suffered the injury in Magic Round and it wasn't pre-existing so that would be the end.

650k at the Storm and winning comps or 800k at the Tigers. I know which one I’d rather.
You'd have to be delusional to think $800k at the Tigers is the best Paps could hope to achieve on the open market.

Fullbacks, even bog average ones, ALWAYS attract stupid money, and Paps is a million miles from bog average.

I'd say $800k would be at the bottom end of what he could realistically command on the open market, and as for suitors, I'd suggest he'd have far more than just the Tigers to pick from.

There would be plenty of suitors.

Warriors have flagged going for Manu, as have Sharks. Broncos obviously.

Even a team like knights would put their hand up, as I believe they're flirting with the idea of putting Ponga at 6 again.

Bulldogs would be happy to go after their 6th or 7th fullback.

Parra have been open about going after fullbacks recently... assume Gutho to center.

When a player like Paps is available (arguably a top 5 fullback and Clive Churchill winner) clubs will check their roster out to see if they can squeeze him in.

Exactly, as @Foordy correctly pointed out, it's probably only the Roosters and Sea Eagles who wouldn't be interested. Every other club would no doubt give it very serious consideration.

I’d rather Ponga, idk why but that’s what I would go for. Maybe it’s because he’s a stand out in an average side and a bigger body.
