Off-Season

Anyone want a low level journalistic read there's some good quality comedy on fox sports nrl at the moment.
Article rating the 16 nrl halves pairings. We are 12th. Might sound fair enough given Reynolds can't fix all our problems (im firmly on the cautious train with this as well), and our 6 isn't set in stone (although some very solid competition so we have some choices!), but then you look at who's in front of us.... warriors are 7th!!!!! lol we CHOSE Reynolds over Johnson like every other club, he practically got cut by the sharks and their 6 choice will be no better then ours. Dragons hunt and a rookie (could argue this one but wait for the next one!).... then TIGERS ARE 8TH, Luke brooks and Jackson Hastings ffs hahahaha... even sharks in front of us is laughable, Reynolds has had 10+ good years AS A HALFBACK in the nrl, hynes had a great year last year AS A FULLBACK with moylan - who there's continuing speculation he will retire because he is playing that poorly!.

Ffs I get this stuff is subjective buy have these guys ever even watched footy.
Yeah I was puzzled by this one too. The only explanation I can come up with is our 5/8 options not having much recent NRL game time, but that should still objectively place us better than the Dragons and Tigers. There's also a good chance that they are just going off the names and didn't actually watch any Broncos games last season because if they did they would've seen the form that Gamble and Kelly were in.

I had to laugh at the Eels being ranked the 4th best halves combo.

just looking at the teams ahead of us in the rankings, i'd have us better than (at a minimum): the Sharks, Dragons, Raiders, Tigers and Warriors.

I'm pretty sure Mark St John doesn't actually exist and is just a troll account for the Fox Sports team to pump out crappy articles.

Heading into this season, the NRL only has four established halves pairings. Even Luke Keary and Sam Walker have never played a game of NRL together. There's nothing to really go on, so really it's anybody's guess after forth spot.

I wonder if we've ever entered a season with so few established halves pairings?

They've retitled the article to something like "Brutal reality check for Reynolds"

Making it out from first glance that something has happened at the Broncos (injury, etc.)... when in reality they've just placed Broncos low on a list that some rando has pulled together, and then blown it up like it's some major news.

There's always that brief window during the off-season where I try to wonder why I was so burnt out on Rugby League and find myself really looking forward to Round 1. Then these clickbait articles start emerging on twitter and I'm quickly reminded.

As far as seasons with less than four established halves pairings, my first guess was 2016 since you had a lot of big moves like Foran to Eels, Maloney to Sharks, Hodkinson to Knights, Sezer to Raiders, Taylor to Titans etc. but you still had around 7 halves.

I think that in itself is an interesting narrative heading into the season. Last year 14/16 clubs halves pairings had played together, the only exclusions were the Wests Tigers and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. Even with Wests, Mbye and Doueihi had played in the spine together with Brooks, they just played at fullback so it wasn't that difficult to get a gauge.

Incoming Badel article in 3, 2, 1.....

Not sure if this is the place for it, but saw some discussion by V'Landys on rule changes for upcoming season.

He said that the only rule they were looking at changing was that infringements by a defensive team on an attacking team inside their own 40 would result in a penalty instead of a 6-again.

Essentially, they are trying to eradicate the tactic of defensive teams purposeful giving away penalties on tackle 1 when the attacking team is on their own line - which emerged last year.

I hate constant tinkering with the rules and making things unnecessarily complicated and I LOATHE the 6-again rule, but I guess if it is here to stay then this change is necessary to correct a common way to exploit it. Now they need to look at closing the unlimited interchange HIA loophole.

From a Broncos perspective, I think it's a net positive. We weren't one of the teams who systematically exploited the 6-again system in this method, so we lose nothing, and don't have to contend with the teams that do it anymore.

Does anyone have stats on penalties / 6 agains conceded in our own 40m vs penalties / 6 agains committed inside opponent's 40m so we can analyse properly? Without proper record of 6 again stats I don't think it's possible...

Don't have the stats to back it up but you'd think this would effect penriff the most. And unfortunately for us, capewell was always treading a fine line with this.

Knowing the nrl, if Reynolds is on fire with his kicking and storm and Roosters are struggling they will likely ban kicking. "Conspiracy crap"? Say hello to 2017 please

I think it actually hinders teams with good kicking games the most, so Penrith, Parra and us.

Under the old rules a good long kicker was absolutely vital to win the field position battle, with this rule it will just turn into the old tactics where games are played within the 20m zones.

Play conservative in your own half waiting for a penalty... once you've got it go on the attack.

Of course Reynolds will still be necessary for us as we pretty well lose every single penalty count... so we will still be trudging it out from our own end.

Unlike Cows who basically win every penalty count and were coming into this year with a horrendous kicking game of the Chad, Drinkwater and Deardon.

It will also benefit roosters and storm immensely.... they were already winning the ruck, but had a bit of a weakness in terms of really good long kicking... that wont matter anymore

To me the best aspect of the six again, in theory, is to stop teams giving away penalties on their try line. So the worst aspect of intentional penalties is back with the worst aspect of six agains (unjustified and often times bullshit ref calls that turn momentum on a whim) remains.

Seriously, how many times did we see teams have an opposition pinned in their 50 on the 3rd or 4th tackle only for a ref to pull a six again from his/her ass. I swear it happened to us every game of the season.

edit: and these randomly decided rule changes are a joke in a salary cap environment where teams plan out their rosters years in advance and have no means of reacting. Like the six again as a concept came out of nowhere when sides had settled their sides based on the old rules.
