OFFICIAL Te Maire Martin Signs Three Year Deal with the Warriors

I have no idea what his actual role is, and how much of it includes actually training players on the game day side of things - but wouldn't you want the main bloke in charge of training our defence in the coaches box every week? I'm sure Darius would probably offer little tidbits at training when he's there - but the bulk of the responsibility has to be on somebody who is there day in day out....

Darius isn't the main bloke training our defence, he is working with TMM, help turn him into a fullback

I love how you have said rocket surgeons. Not rocket scientists or neurosurgeons, but rocket surgeons. Brilliant.

Not sure if he did it for that reason but Bulls boys still say it all the time- Roy used to say it's not Rocket Surgery boys......

That's not it Roy!

Darius Boyd should be nowhere near our defence coaching team. This is a guy who would have dived out of the way of contact if he was playing touch football.

Before his sad decline, he was one of the best fullbacks in the game ... especially at organising the defence, which is what we need to to pass on to TMM, seems he's doing a decent job as well

I can sorta understand it, he was always in a good position as well. But I would hate it if he had anything to do with the most important part of being the last line of defence- tackling technique.

I thought Darius was a mental health advisor / part time consultant - not part of the full time coaching staff?

Yep simple is the way to go. Look what happened when 'he must not be named' tried to get over complicate things.

Footy is a simple game played by simple blokes. You get the odd intellect in there, but let's be real - not many of these fellas are going to be rocket surgeons.
Nor brain scientists.

Wonder when he first twinged his hip flexor. He looks pretty scared of contact at times and it was pretty noticeable this game. Understandable I guess

You are probably right .
Still I thought it was interesting Hoss was giving TMM advice on full backing .

Interesting pattern starting to emerge regarding our points conceded this season and Tesi Niu being at fullback.

Average conceded: 19.6
Average with Tesi Niu: 26.4
Average without Tesi Niu: 8.3

Round - Fullback (points conceded)
Round 1 - Isaako (4)
Round 2 - Niu (10)
Round 3 - Niu (38)
Round 4 - Niu (20)
Round 5 - Niu (24)
Round 6 - Niu (40)
Round 7 - Martin (14)
Round 8 - Martin (7)
I posted the above after TMM’s first 2 games at fullback to highlight Tesi’s poor defence organisation skills but now Martin has played 5 games for us I wanted to update it. Not to shit on Tesi because I don’t want to continue to criticise a guy that isn’t even being picked but I do want to highlight how good we’ve been defensively with Martin at the back.

Average conceded: 16.4 (11/181)
Average with Tesi Niu: 26.4 (5/132)
Average with Martin: 9 (5/45)

Round - Fullback (points conceded)
Round 1 - Isaako (4) W
Round 2 - Niu (10) W
Round 3 - Niu (38) L
Round 4 - Niu (20) L
Round 5 - Niu (24) L
Round 6 - Niu (40) L
Round 7 - Martin (14) W
Round 8 - Martin (7) W
Round 9 - Martin (12) W
Round 10 - Martin (0) W
Round 11 - Martin (12) W

And that's the thing too, we all want Herbie to stay, but who is more important right now (sorry to steal this from the other thread, it was such a great question)? TMM is just so unflappably calm and composed, for someone out of the game so long he is incredibly composed. He has only just shown glimpses of his attack, but he played almost all his NRL in the halves so he'll definitely show more as time goes on.

Maybe with Herbie supposedly re-signing for one more year, we have our answer. I would like to think TMM stays next year and in the pre-season we have Herbie, TMM and Cobbo all given time to make their case. At the moment though, TMM playing at the back is the ideal situation as the 2-5 combo of Oates, Herbie, Staggs and Cobbo is amazing to watch, in attack and in defence.

I partly think Herbie has been bamboozled with an offer of trialling for fullback in the offseason. I think once he has been re-signed we will see TMM re-signed. I’d like our spine to be settled now so we can introduce Mam to first grade at 6 next season, Mozer of the bench the year after and Cobbo to fullback the one after that.

We then either extend Reynolds to play with our long term young spine or we go to market for another game manager in their late 20s

I think this all depends on Mam and how soon he will be ready for the permanent 6 role. If that is 2 or 3 years away, then I think TMM needs to go to 6. Whilst Gamble has done admirably, long term I don't think we will compete with the top sides on a regular basis with him at 6. On the other hand i think from what we've seen TMM is a step up and has potential to be come elite playing alongside Reyno. In 3 years time when Reyno leave, potentially that sets us up for a TMM/Mam halves combo if TMM can transition to halfback.

So in my mind, it's who from the rest, can we slot in at FB, even if it takes to the end of next season to get them ready. Cobbo, Herbie, someone else?

If Mam is ready next year, then maybe we stick with TMM at FB longer if he extends.....I hope he does. If he does, he needs to be in the side, so I think Cobbo and Herbie keep their current positions.

His killer instinct while hunting the wild pigs is well hidden.

Another 2-3 games and he’ll be close to where he wants to be fitness wise.

I’d love to see him in the 6 next year next to Reynolds. But it then remains to be seen what we do with Mam if he kicks on.
