The point you are missing is that JAC wanted out of Melbourne and wanted to return to Sydney, citing family illness as his point.

Melbourne, realizing there was nothing to be gained from their perspective by releasing him, told him that he is more than welcome to negotiate with clubs in Sydney but he won't be released before the end of his contract.

Regardless of whether their wing stocks were high low or anywhere inbetween, Melbourne told him to be a professional and adhere to the length of his contract. That's what we're currently doing at the moment and long may it continue.

You don't need Haas drama, you need a 'no drama' world for team harmony and purpose. If he's gone the rest will adjust quickly enough.

There are multiple issues at play here and how they impact the team. On one perspective, being supporting of your players and doing what you can for them is a positive thing. On another, capitulating to a player throwing a tantrum about earning more money when others are taking less, then letting them go to go earn that money can have a drastically net negative impact on the playing group.

In psychology terms - things like fairness (for example from the SCARF Model) are vital cogs of a performing team environment. Is it even remotely fair that Payne Haas, on top dollar in the player group, wants to leave those players who maybe took a little less to be there, so he can get more cash? No. No it's not.

How they handle this with the playing group is critically important, "giving in" however is not their only way to win here though.

If they announced to the team they are working on ensuring the best outcome for all involved (the other players and the club included), this is not something which will be bad for morale, in fact, quite the opposite.

Payne may be miffed - but that can be dealt with in the off season and the club could use Payne's attractiveness to other clubs to rehome him in the offseason, with a trade for a player of similar importance. Payne can remain motivated by the club saying they will release him at year's end, once they negotiate with a suitable club for him to remain on his current contract - they should stand firm on him not getting paid more to go elsewhere and this I believe is actually within the NRL guidelines on a release from contract. If Payne starts playing terribly, his brand goes down and he will attract less offers.

To a clever leadership team, this is an opportunity to bring in someone new who's going to give 100% and not agitate like Payne who by recent efforts is already showing signs of not being the million dollar prop anymore - more the best prop in a terrible team for two years running.

He said he wanted his kids to grow up around family.

But not everyone are the same. Might not have pissed off JAC, but doesn’t mean it won’t happen here. JAC also wasn’t requesting an immediate release.

One year. He was requesting a release from the final year of his contract. He was always staying in Melbourne for 2020.

Fair enough - corrected. Melbourne still held firm though and everyone ended up happy. Like there is no reason at all for Brisbane to fold on this, and if we're going with the argument that it might upset the playing group by not releasing him - on what basis? Upset them because we're standing in his way (like he's bigger than the club?) Upset because we're making him stick to a very well paid contract? Upset because we're sending a message that the players are no longer running the club?

If any of the aforementioned scenarios upset the playing group - fantastic. They aren't the people we need at the club either, so they too can leave.

The thing that shits me big time with Payne and all this contract bullshit is how some people always say he signed for less than he is worth, which to a point is correct but they fail to acknowledge his first couple of years here, when he had proven nothing he was getting paid way more than he was worth. Swings and roundabouts really. Its evened itself out.
 
The other sketchy part is how did this go public so quick? The broncos wouldn’t have said anything and apparently the playing group didn’t know. So it’s obviously Payne’s camp that involved the media.

That is really poor form from hass then. The broncos have spoken a lot about mateship and accountability forming part of the culture rebuild and he has shown neither by not fronting his team mates first (instead letting it leak via his new management).

If he wants out, we need to leverage it to our benefit and gain a good spine player.
