I support the NRL banning kickoffs if it means fucking short kickoffs and short drop outs are never, ever seen on a league field again.

I think it's made worse by how bad teams still are at this aspect of the game. It's honestly baffling.

As someone else pointed out previously in this thread, this should be drilled to perfection. The same kick, to the same spot, with the same chasers and same jumper every single time. We have a 6 foot 9 kid on our team... how hard would it be to put it high and 10-12 metres out for him to bat back to a waiting Ezra whenever he's on the field.

It's still such a mess... BUT it's the least of the NRL's concerns right now - nobody even knows the rules of the game anymore.

I just don't buy into the reasoning that they aren't absolutely shit decisions to make. Long kickoff, the opposition team is nowhere near the 10M in your own danger zone unless multiple tacklers miss their mark, and the chance of getting the ball back is nothing more than a gamble.

Kick the guts out of it and get the fast lads to use their speed and chase it and make an effective tackle. Fix the useless bench rotation of absolute numpty useless forwards to make sure fatigue allows for the entire team to keep their line when running back up field.

Stop the shorts. Just for the love of **** stop.

They should probably get rid of the 7 tackle restart. Going for the repeat set isn’t as rewarding as it once was.

i thought he was actually a serviceable replacement for Reyno. He was better than Madden thats for sure and less of a speed bump
His long distance kicks were actually pretty good. Coates dropped one, mam scored a try off one, and he was close to getting a 40/20 once iirc. He needed to get it on that last play, not sailor.

I just hate it because we’re so shit at them, we barely won one of those contests all night.

If we had even close to 50/50, it would be alright. Makes it difficult when a team like Melbourne is down your end and you can’t get the ball back, they’ll score eventually.

It`s actually easier to defend 10 metres out would you believe ?
13 in the line and the wingers don`t drop back . It`s been a thing for several years now ...

I’ve seen Sailor do those banana kicks a few times now and he’s probably the only half/fullback in the comp who I have seen do it.

Look like a magician if it comes off, a full blown fool if it doesn’t. Coates runs the length if his team mates were onside.

Not when they get set after set at you it isn’t.

True, but one half missed tackle and its a try. Opposition can set up sweeping attacking movements and score easily like the storm did 3x last night. At least if it's 50 out they have to waste some petrol trying to get back to our danger zone.
If we were any good at the short restarts, it wouldn't be an issue. But we had 6 or 7 shirt restarts last night and I don't think we won 1. Put them on ice imo

Agree, kick it 40-50 metres, at least if you make good contact on the first ruck they’ve got to get some momentum and even then they only get 1 or 2 plays at your line.

This is what you get when you have a team full of young players who lack calm and composure in big moments. We play frantic, thoughtless footy and instead of methodically winding down the clock and closing out games, we hand the opposition opportunity after opportunity to steal the win, and then say 'oh how did this happen again?' when they take it. All it takes is one bad decision late in a close game to open up the opportunity for your opposition, and we are a football team with ALOT of bad decisions in us.

I love Patty, but I think he's yet to establish himself as a true leader (mostly because he's still very young and still developing his own game - I think it will come). Without Reynolds we have a group of young, exuberant, somewhat immature players and the most experienced players we do have aren't big leaders (Haas, Staggs, Arthars, Jensen).

I think the player who should really be trying to add to their game by stepping up and taking control of the team and leading by example and reigning in and providing some balance to the flahsy young players in the team is Billy Walters. Walters has the pedigree, the experience in the spine and the brains to step up and steer this team around with Reynolds gone, and I hope he does.
I agree regarding Patty. The guy is super human and a great communicator but most games he been captain in we’ve been a really dumb footy side. Not sure he had much say in the penalty goal or short kick restarts but he needed to calm everyone down. Maybe it’s hard to be a decision maker when you’re so exhausted though.

Not that it would’ve helped last night, and he seems like a real pain off of the field, but on field Walsh looks like the strongest leader and smartest (this is not saying much) footy brain.

The NRL don't have an issue with the short kickoffs ... It's the long ones that want gone

Reynolds best drop out ever was the one in the final against the storm last year. Long, low and angled.
That's a good point, everyone expects the high looping short kick. What about a hard, fast grubbering kick, put pressure on the receiver to scoop it up and commit or try and trap it.
And yeah aiming for the touch line too would be better than what we were serving up last night.

Not when they get set after set at you it isn’t.

What would be different if you kick long ?
Opposition get to within 5 metres kick it in goal , get another long drop out .

The point is not the drop out it`s defending the kicks that lead to drop outs . Kicking long isn`t going to change the repeat sets .
